Dealing with discussions which need to be put on hold for a bit

Discussion is very important on Wikipedia. However, sometimes, due to various reasons, discussion sometimes ends up on a course which will never become productive, or resolve any kind of dispute. If this happens here, I may request that you temporarily refain from posting further messages here (except required notices), per WP:NOBAN. The objective is to act as a metaphorical circuit breaker (before we have a metaphorical fire). It is nothing against you or your viewpoint, but simply me assessing that the discussion needs to be put on hold for a while, since its current trajectory isn't going anywhere good.

If I am acting a bit odd-er

Should I ever go on some random vandalism spree or start acting much weirder than usual, don't waste time warning me here, just limit the damage and block me immediately, as my account would have been compromised.

Are you here because I reverted your edit? If so, please read the below

One of the my common activities here is recent changes patrol, and you may have been directed here after I reverted one of your edits. In that case, first of all, click on all the links in the template I left on your user page, then take a deep breath, remember to avoid making it personal, and post here if you still think it necessary. If your request is a reasonable objection (I.e. I stuffed up, again, since I am not exactly perfect), I will typically self-revert (if the edit is still live), strike the warning template, and leave an apology note below it. If the edit cannot be reinstated in its current form, but can be made suitable, I will give some direction to policies, guidelines or help pages, suggest that you try to fix it yourself first (you will probably learn more this way than if I do it for you). If you still aren't sure how to fix it, then let me know and I will make the requested change.

Stay safe and happy editing! Mako001 (C)  (T)

Oh, I hadn't kept an eye on that thread, too busy dealing with a rather er, difficult case... Thanks very much! Mako001 (C)  (T) (The Alternate Mako) 01:29, 1 January 2022 (UTC)[reply]
😄 No worries, I was just afraid that my answer wasn't a clear-enough "yes" and/or you didn't want to copy the original one for privacy reasons. So here's a shiny new one! ~ ToBeFree (talk) 03:11, 1 January 2022 (UTC)[reply]

DYK for Eumillipes

On 2 January 2022, Did you know was updated with a fact from the article Eumillipes, which you recently nominated. The fact was ... that with 1,000 or more legs, Eumillipes persephone (example pictured) is the first known "true" millipede? The nomination discussion and review may be seen at Template:Did you know nominations/Eumillipes. You are welcome to check how many pageviews the nominated article or articles got while on the front page (here's how, Eumillipes), and if they received a combined total of at least 416.7 views per hour (i.e., 5,000 views in 12 hours or 10,000 in 24), the hook may be added to the statistics page. Finally, if you know of an interesting fact from another recently created article, then please feel free to suggest it on the Did you know talk page.

I've actually made a subpage to help me to keep track of the handiwork of these paid editors, User:Mako001/Azerbaijan paid editing cleanup, I'll take a look, I had run out of further leads, so this may be very useful, thanks. I'll probably have to hold off AfDing it for a bit, as there several others I've opened in the last few days. Mako001 (C)  (T)  07:32, 25 January 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Please Do Not Shut Down Dispute Resolution

Since this discussion had become counterproductive, and was getting further away from a resolution, rather than

closer to one, 2601:441:4400:1740:7CBB:F534:DB2F:42BC has been asked to temporarily refrain from posting to my talk page, for 30 days from 30 January 2022. After this they may continue the discussion, hopefully this "time-out" will help.

The following discussion has been closed. Please do not modify it.

Mako001, I feel like I'm under attack. I am attempting Dispute Resolution with you, clumsily but to the best of my ability. Your response was to delete everything I wrote here and refuse to discuss it. This is not justified. Dispute Resolution is encouraged by Wikipedia Policy IIRC. I edited the Talk page in good faith, trying my best to remain within the limits of the other edits on that page and on other article Talk pages. I was honestly unaware of making a mistake and I am sorry for continuing a forum-style discussion without knowing it was not allowed. You first responded to my edits with what feels like a personal attack (accusing me with the politically charged, very hurtful attack word "soapboxing"), starting this interaction from the beginning by assuming bad faith. That personal attack was the only thing you put in the edit summary when you reverted everything I wrote, which is why I initially thought it was vandalism. The template you used also made it look like you might be a bot, because the templates are so generic and uninformative. When I complained that you're attacking me and tried to start Dispute Resolution, you accused me of deliberately not understanding you, which is not true and even more hurtful.

I have only just now seen your new comment to my Talk page that explains the policy I broke with one of my 3 Talk page comments (my Talk page is mostly a mess of confusing templates). Thank you for clarifying. I did not understand before because at first you didn't tell me what policy my 3 Talk posts violated. I also didn't understand your previous templates and comments because my developmental disability makes it especially hard for me to understand vague sentences. Accusations that I "deliberately don't understand" are extremely painful and triggering to me because of my disability and trauma history of being attacked and punished by others when I honestly don't understand them. I'm angry and deeply hurt because of your politically charged personal attack and the way you have been triggering me, but I'm trying to engage in good faith Dispute Resolution instead of reporting. I'm trying to stay calm as best I can; I recognize I was triggered and very upset yesterday.

I'm only a very occasional editor and I haven't memorized all the Wikipedia Policies. I actually have trouble reading and understanding the Policy pages because they're written in difficult-to-understand language. I evidently misunderstand the edit warring definition. I still don't know why you deleted my Talk comment on the position of the article in the Social Democracy Series. It wasn't a forum discussion.

I feel like I'm under attack. Not being able to understand why yesterday made your conduct more painful and triggering. Please discuss this with me and engage in Dispute Resolution instead of just deleting everything I post.

At the very least please just tell me, without a confusing template or personal attack, what policy/policies my (Social Democracy Series) Talk comment violated that led you to delete it as well. This post has been edited since I found your most recent comment on my Talk page. 2601:441:4400:1740:7CBB:F534:DB2F:42BC (talk) 16:22, 30 January 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Look, if you are having trouble understanding the policy pages, that would suggest to me that you may, whilst your actions are in good faith, lack the competence required to edit Wikipedia. I do not mean this as a personal attack, just as an honest assessment of your editing ability. There are other wikipedias such as simple.wikipedia.org which you may find easier to understand, if English is not your first language, you may be able to find a Wikipedia in your first language. If you still don't know why I deleted your comment I will try to explain. The comment you made on the talk page to reply to Kghose was not appropriate for a talk page, as it was not related to building an encyclopedia, if you don't understand that, I don't know what else I can say to make it clearer. You have already been made aware of WP:NOTFORUM which is why I removed the comment that you made in reply to Kghose's original comment. I also deleted another comment when I removed that one, as I removed all of your edits to the talk page up to that point, which wasn't actually what I intended. As I recall, I did not refer to your edit as soapboxing at any point, however I did refer to Kghoses original comment as borderline soapboxing on two occasions, but one of those cases, on your talk page, it wasn't exactly clear that I wasn't referring to your comment. I did genuinely offer to report myself to AN3 if you believed that I had edit warred, since you were having trouble doing so. I don't see this discussion getting any closer to resolving the dispute, since anything I am saying seems to get misunderstood anyway, and so further discussion only gets further away from resolving the dispute. Therefore, per WP:NOBAN, I firmly request that you do not post anything further on my talk page for at least 30 days, which should allow time to cool off. I removed the earlier comments here for the same reason, that the resolution seemed to be getting further away, not closer. Mako001 (C)  (T)  22:04, 30 January 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Your claim was that it appeared to be a test. I was just trying to add the third candidate's picture.

Yes, but it seemed to be a test since you removed the existing image to do so. I will have another look at this. Mako001 (C)  (T)  11:08, 3 February 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Copyright notice on Zane Grey Theatre article

Again, answer the question. What is supposed to be copyrighted? What is being investigated. The user who added it gave no reason as to why they added it and you are merely enforcing it seemingly without knowing what it is about which isn't a good look for a wikipedia editor. _ A (The Mummy). — Preceding unsigned comment added by 146.90.0.73 (talk) 11:27, 3 February 2022 (UTC)[reply]

It was added because the article was created by a user known to be a serial copyright violator, and needs to be checked for copyright violations by a user who has proven experience with such things. The reason why it was added was provided in the template, if you click on the link to the copyvio investigation page, you will see why. Mako001 (C)  (T)  11:37, 3 February 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Why was this reason not given by the user that added it? Also do you actually have any real evidence of this? It is a bit much to just ask me to believe some random person I do not know on wikipedia. The fact remains that the user who added the notice did not give a reason to why he did; s0rry but the reasons are not clear or obvious when reading the copyright notice at all. _ The Mummy. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 146.90.0.73 (talk) 11:44, 3 February 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Yes. WP:IDHT applies quite aptly to your conduct here. Mako001 (C)  (T)  11:47, 3 February 2022 (UTC)[reply]
So you think it is reasonable to add a copyright reason without specifying why? Strange. Also perhaps you should actually reply to my questions and points? They are perfectly reasonable. _ The Mummy.
Your questions are rhetorical and loaded, hence why I am not answering them. They have also already been answered if you bother to read what I have already written. Mako001 (C)  (T)  12:06, 3 February 2022 (UTC)[reply]

That is me - I managed to reclaim my account. I had to give away my IP when you started to accuse me of being a sockpuppet of someone I don't know. You seem to be, if I am blunt, pretty paranoid about the user who created the Zane Grey Theatre article so much so that you are ready to just throw these accusations around. I just stumbled upon that article because I was nostalgic for the show only to find a copyright notice replacing the whole article put up by a user who didn't give any reason for doing so and I took it to be a silly act of vandalism masquerading as a legitimate concern; I still stand by my critique that the user who put the copyright notice should have at least given a reason to why they did it in their edit summary; this would have been avoided if they did and I wouldn't have had to reveal my IP (THANKS!).

And, it is pretty impolite to not answer simply questions (which are neither rhetorical or loaded). I simply wanted to know the reason to WHY a whole article is an ugly copyright notice now. I think that is fair. On investigation, which I had to do myself as the notice didn't give a reason either, I gather some of the images might be copyrighted? Instead of adding a notice, it would have been easier to just remove the images. The Mummy (talk) 08:17, 4 February 2022 (UTC)[reply]

I have a few points to make:
1. I am not "paranoid" about that user, there is a legitimate concern that this article contains copyvios, as this user created many articles with copyvios. The user has also previously used multiple IP ranges for the purpose of sockpuppetry, even on this very article. Hence why, when an IP appears and removes the copyvio notice repeatedly, it has very good chance of being them.
2. You didn't have to reveal your IP, regardless of what you say. That was your choice and your choice only. I cannot force you to reveal your IP. The suggestion that you may have been a sockpuppet of that user did not force you to reveal your real identity. You could have easily waited until you had recovered your account, before taking action. If you wanted to read the article, it was still there in the history section.
3. You violated 3RR. This is not acceptable. Period. Whether logged in or not.
4. I have given what seems to be the reason for that notice being added, several times over.
5. If you have an issue with that user not leaving a summary, please raise it on their talk page. Mako001 (C)  (T)  11:09, 4 February 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for cleaning up the mess

Reverting changes to history of lindy hop page=

Hi, you reverted changes I made to the history of lindy hop page. I'm not logged in atm, and just forgot to add a reason for the edits. I've just been doing some tidying up of the grammar and logic of the page so that it makes for clearer reading. Is it possible to have my edits re-instated? thanks. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 2001:4479:1B01:1B00:65B6:9427:DBF9:C0B9 (talk) 10:50, 5 February 2022 (UTC)[reply]

The main issue I have is that you were removing a lot of the references, and then adding other material without sourcing it. You need to cite proper sources when making edits per Wikipedia:Verifiability. As it is at the moment, unfortunately, I cannot reinstate the edits. If you want to make major changes which temporarily break the page in some way, like removing references or adding unsourced content, which is then resolved soon after, you may want to go into "edit source", copy the page to your user sandbox (once you have logged back in), then reinclude it once it is ready, by just replacing the existing material with the edited material. Vandalism by another user

Hello, I created an account on here just so I could try communicating with you. The user with the IP address 77.56.17.121 appears to be going around and vandalizing the pages of public holidays in different countries. Most of this user's edits seem to consist of deleting sizeable chunks of pages for public holidays and then going back in and undoing reversions to their vandalism. I was wondering why "Public holidays in North Korea" kept getting shorter and noticed that you undid one of their deletions. The page was fine before this user came on 25 December 2021 and deleted valid information with sources and not all of this information has even been restored at any point since then. Is there anything you can do? I check the page as a reference when doing reading on the DPRK and know that this user's changes are not helpful, I'm not sure about the changes to other pages they have made. Thank you. Note:IP in question seems to have long term issues with failing to communicate, unexplained deletion of large amounts of content, and absolutely never using an edit summary, dating back almost four years. Reported to WP:ANI. Mako001 (C)  (T)  07:18, 6 February 2022 (UTC)[reply]

You are not the topic of the ANI, just notifying you that one of your edits was mentioned. The discussion can be found here. Elijahandskip (talk) 05:49, 6 February 2022 (UTC)[reply]
@Elijahandskip: Are some of the diffs a bit mixed up by any chance? The one pointing to my request to stop edit warring points to a diff on the article, not on the IPs talk page. Could you also clarify that my comment to the IP was asking them both (184 included) to stop edit warring, and discuss it properly, not so much telling either particularly to stop? Since as I see it, both are in the wrong by continuing the edit war. Mako001 (C)  (T)  06:45, 6 February 2022 (UTC)[reply]
@Mako001: Ah thank you for finding that mixed up revision. I corrected that and I also put an amendment note at the bottom noting the warning of 184 + the revision. Again, thank you for catching that revision mix up. Elijahandskip (talk) 06:59, 6 February 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Incorrect edits of a song performed by Mike Posner labeled “Cooler Than Me”

You removed “Craig Klepto Tucker” as a co writer for the song “Cooler Than Me” please research next time before making incorrect edits. He is indeed a co writer of said song. 2601:589:4101:2FED:2842:FA09:522B:2203 (talk) 20:20, 6 February 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you for alerting me to this, however, if I recall correctly, I reverted it as you did not provide a reliable source. When someone has a middle name of "Klepto" (Kleptos is a Greek word, meaning "to steal" or something like that, and you have likely heard of the term Kleptomaniac) it seems reasonably likely that it is not actually true, and since you hadn't provided a suitably explanatory edit summary I wasn't really able to tell that the edit was constructive. Nevertheless, my apologies. If it is sourced by the sources already provided, feel free to reinclude it, but just explain that it is backed up by the sources provided, otherwise, add a citation to a reliable source when you add it. Cheerio and happy editing! Mako001 (C)  (T)  21:59, 6 February 2022 (UTC)[reply]
