William Swinton

William Swinton was a war correspondent in the American Civil War. He was born in 1833. In 1858, Swinton joined the staff of the New York Times. He was sent to the front in 1862. Knowledgeable about strategy and tactics, Swinton wrote the book Campaigns of the Army of the Potomac in 1866. The book is still useful as a reference, owing to Swinton's eyewitness experiences, careful research, and also to the fact that he sent proofs to several of the prominent generals in the army's campaigns, including Joseph Hooker, George Meade, Robert E. Lee, and others. After the war, Swinton became a professor of English at the University of California. He died in 1892.
