Editing news 2023 #1
Read this in another language • Subscription list for this newsletter
This newsletter includes two key updates about the Editing team's work:
- The Editing team will finish adding new features to the Talk pages project and deploy it.
- They are beginning a new project, Edit check.
Talk pages project
The Editing team is nearly finished with this first phase of the Talk pages project. Nearly all new features are available now in the Beta Feature for Discussion tools.
It will show information about how active a discussion is, such as the date of the most recent comment. There will soon be a new "Add topic" button. You will be able to turn them off at Special:Preferences#mw-prefsection-editing-discussion. Please tell them what you think.
An A/B test for Discussion tools on the mobile site has finished. Editors were more successful with Discussion tools. The Editing team is enabling these features for all editors on the mobile site.
New Project: Edit Check
The Editing team is beginning a project to help new editors of Wikipedia. It will help people identify some problems before they click "Publish changes". The first tool will encourage people to add references when they add new content. Please watch that page for more information. You can join a conference call on 3 March 2023 to learn more.

Other properties
Please add:
- short description
- italic title
- sort
to the article properties dialog. Lfstevens (talk) 07:07, 24 February 2023 (UTC)
- Template:Short description is a local template that isn't used at any other wiki. Use Insert > Template to add it.
- "Italic title" (DISPLAYTITLE) is available through the Advanced Settings item. Just add the wikitext around the page title shown in the dialog box. If you want to use Template:Italic title instead, then Insert > Template.
- "Sort" is in the Categories item ("Options Sort this page by default as"). Whatamidoing (WMF) (talk) 23:37, 28 February 2023 (UTC)

The numbered footnotes in my text, refering to the citations, appear on my mobile but not my laptop. In both instances this is occuring in my sandbox. Can you explain the disparity? Thank you, Flavia

Centering text
- User agent: Mozilla/5.0 (Macintosh; Intel Mac OS X 10_15_7) AppleWebKit/605.1.15 (KHTML, like Gecko) Version/16.3 Safari/605.1.15
There should be an easier way to center text in the visual editor.

Possible issue with Visual Editor
Using: Chrome: 112.0.5615.50, Windows 10 (64-bit), Vector legacy (2010)
I know that there are limitations with Visual Editor and templates but I've started to notice it acting weird on a few specifically. If you edit certain templates with Visual Editor, it will most of time, mess up the parameter spacing and hidden comments that may also be in the template. Below are the templates I've seen the most effected by VE; I would surmise there are a lot of other templates which can get messed up regarding the hidden comments and parameter spacing in them.
Template:Infobox settlement: Removes parameter spacing; messes up hidden comments (Example).
Template:Infobox U.S. county: Doesn't create a new line for each new parameter added (Example)
Template:US Census population: May mess up the parameter spacing (Example).
Template:Jct: How the template is viewed in VE mode means the parameter order get reversed (Example).
Other: If imputing bullet points manually, user can create multiple different bullet "charts" which don't merge into a single "chart" (Example).
To my best knowledge, these issues don't hurt the contents of the template if in "Read" mode (expect for the bullet point issue), but it does mess up the template layout which could be a problem for other users. I'm concerned that, due to the nature of the issue and amount of bytes it add/removes, Wikipedia might incorrectly ping newer users edits as vandalism and led to edit reverts or bans (which is unfair since many don't know). I've tried to minimize using VE with templates now but I've seen many others who use VE and unintentionally mess up the template(s). All in all, not an immediate concern, but it might be good to investigate the issue in the future. Thank you for your time; have a good day.
Unable to add photo

URL: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ruby_Timms_Price?action=edit It seems impossible to easily add photos to the page. The name of the file seems correct, I own it and checked that box. But it just keep kicking out. Why?

I couldn't insert a footnote, the visual editor didn't turn on. It was hard to use and confusing.

Color
- User agent: Mozilla/5.0 (Macintosh; Intel Mac OS X 10_15_7) AppleWebKit/537.36 (KHTML, like Gecko) Chrome/112.0.0.0 Safari/537.36
The visual editor (and the source editor, honestly) should have some method to control the color of the text, like literally any other program that resembles a word processor. Some mediawiki sites would really benefit from being able to color-code information.

- Color coding information is not accessible to people with vision problems. This is the primary reason it is not in VE. If you use colors, you likely should wrap that in a dedicated template, where you can ensure that accessible color contrast is enforced for that one specific situation. —TheDJ (talk • contribs) 11:26, 8 May 2023 (UTC)

Cite button on toolbar
- User agent: Mozilla/5.0 (Macintosh; Intel Mac OS X 10_9_5) AppleWebKit/537.36 (KHTML, like Gecko) Chrome/65.0.3325.181 Safari/537.36
Hi, the cite button on the toolbar of the visual editor has not been visible when I edit on a tablet. It has been on and off for the past few months, reappearing and disappearing, but these last few weeks the button is simply gone.
I've now noticed the cite button is also gone when I edit on a desktop. Is this something being done sitewide? Thanks

Creating an article
- User agent: Mozilla/5.0 (iPad; CPU OS 12_5_7 like Mac OS X) AppleWebKit/605.1.15 (KHTML, like Gecko) Version/12.1.2 Mobile/15E148 Safari/604.1
Im trying to create an article, but when I click submit it just says “no such draft exists” or “drafts usually start with draft or user”. What do I do?

Way to see number of bytes added or removed while editing
- User agent: Mozilla/5.0 (Macintosh; Intel Mac OS X 10_15_7) AppleWebKit/605.1.15 (KHTML, like Gecko) Version/16.5 Safari/605.1.15
There should be a way to see the number of bytes added/removed without fully going to the Contributions screen, either a dynamic count in the editor itself or a count next to the "Publish changes" button.

Cannot select multiple lines with double-click

URL: https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Fusion_energy_gain_factor&action=edit
I am trying to remove a series of blank lines from an article. Normally I would do this by double-clicking to select the current line, and then dragging up or down to select subsequent lines. This does not work in this editor, the single line is selected but dragging does not work.

Dialog boxes in this editor are terrible
- User agent: Mozilla/5.0 (Macintosh; Intel Mac OS X 10_15_7) AppleWebKit/605.1.15 (KHTML, like Gecko) Version/16.5 Safari/605.1.15
URL: https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Fusion_energy_gain_factor&action=edit
For some reason, the dialog boxes, like the one I am typing into now, have their buttons strewn across the window. In this particular. box, Submit is in the upper right, Cancel in the upper left, and whatever "File a technical task" is in the lower left.
All action buttons should be grouped together. Normally at the bottom. I am not clear why this convention, which has existed for 40 years now, is not being followed in this UI.

When the text in this box is a few lines long the cursor is no longer in the right location
- User agent: Mozilla/5.0 (Macintosh; Intel Mac OS X 10_15_7) AppleWebKit/605.1.15 (KHTML, like Gecko) Version/16.5 Safari/605.1.15
URL: https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Fusion_energy_gain_factor&action=edit
I have a film of this, but it appears there is no way to upload it.
When typing into this box, eventually a limit is reached and suddenly the cursor jumps "forward" about a third of a line. It just did it now. So when I type THIS for instance, the cursor is about three words to the right and that distance increases as every line is added. Now I can't even see it because it is on the next line.
Safari 16.5, macOS 12.6.5.
