The Rugby Sound Festival is an annual music and cultural festival held in the city of Legnano, in the province of Milan, Italy. During the years, the festival has evolved into a celebration of diverse musical genres.[1][2]

The essence of the Rugby Sound Festival lies in its commitment to inclusivity and artistic excellence. The festival's lineup spans a spectrum of genres, including rock, folk, pop, hip hop, indie, rap and electronic dance music.[3] This diversity mirrors the organizers' dedication to providing a platform for both local talents and internationally acclaimed artists. The festival is now managed by Shining Production, which combines musical excellence with street food offerings, creating a unique experience for attendees.[4]

History

The Rugby Sound Festival was founded in the early 1980s and it was created as the Parabiago Rugby team's end-of-year party. The festival then became accessible to everyone in 2000 and now, in a short period, it has become one of the most important festivals in northern Italy. In 2012 the organizers of the festival decided that the festival needed a professional management, so they started a collaboration with Shining Production. This allowed the festival to gained attendance and popularity. The newly appointed organizers began collaborating with external professionals from diverse fields: communication, sponsors, advertisement and other areas, such as the street food.[4] The Rugby Sound Festival held in 2023, had the largest amount of visitors in the festival's history, which is why is called the "record" edition. The event garnered an attendance of 70,000 individuals and achieved 6 sold out within 12 days, highlighting the significance of the Festival and affirming its current standing as one of the most renowned festivals in Italy.[5]

Chi non avanza, retrocede.

-Rugby Sound founder Pietro Dallù's quote when he started the Rugby Sound project

Parabiago Rugby

The Parabiago Rugby team was created in 1948 by Pietro Dallù, and still exists today. The first president was Nino Cataldi, and in two years the team got promoted to the first division (Serie A). Among the members of the Parabiago Rugby team, 200 of them, both men and women, decided to join a group named "Squadra dei 200"; this team upholds the genuine values of sport, emphasizes the importance of teamwork, and promotes solidarity, continues to actively contribute to the Festival, by participating in security.[4]

Location

Libero Ferrario Stadium

Libero Ferrario Stadium

In 2000, the Rugby Sound Festival was first held at the Libero Ferrario Stadium: a football stadium located in the city of Parabiago, in the province of Milan, that was opened in 1933 in honor of cyclist Libero Ferrario. The stadium mainly hosts Parabiago's home games and has a capacity of 700 seats. The specific location of the event, which took place there between 2000 and 2007, is Viale Guglielmo Marconi, 39, 20015 Parabiago (MI).

"Venegoni - Marazzini" sports court

From 2008 to 2016, the event was held in the Parabiago Rugby team's sports center, "Vengoni - Marazzini" Sports Court.[6] The stadium's exact address is Via Carso, 2, 20015 Parabiago (MI). The "Venegoni Marazzini" Sports Centre in Via Carso has been home to Rugby Parabiago since 1985 when the club relocated from its previous headquarters, the "Libero Ferrario" Sports Centre. It is a conceptual modern construction that has been regularly updated and improved. It has spread across an area of approximately 38,000 m2 to the southwest of the municipal jurisdiction.[7]

Visconti Castle

Visconti Castle

Since 2017, the festival has been held at the Visconti Castle in Legnano.[8] Located in Lombardy, the castle stands up on the south of Legnano, which is part of the Metropolitan city of Milan. It is situated on a little island that was created by the Olona river and it has also been referred to as the San Giorgio Castle from the thirteenth century.[9] The precise location of the 'Rugby Sound Festival' is P.zza della Concordia, 1, 20025 Legnano (MI).

Directions to Rugby Sound Festival

The green space behind the castle, bordered by the Olona river, is known as the Castle Island of Legnano. To get there from Milan, Bergamo/Brescia, and Varese, take the A8 (Legnano exit) and proceed down the avenue Cadorna toward the parking lots on Viale Toselli. Along the same route are the pedestrian entrances to the festival area. For those traveling by rail to Legnano for the Rugby Sound Festival, the distance is around 20 minutes on foot (1.8 kilometres).[10]

Organization

Since 2016 the organization behind the Rugby Sound Festival has been Shining Production, with the contribution of Comune di Legnano and Parabiago Rugby, whose athletes and parents are the first ones to volunteer for the festival. The preparation of the event is followed by a considerable amount of people, who in turn are divided into groups with different tasks. The work teams are followed by a coordinator who divides the amount of work, the work shifts and maintains order in the team.[11]

The festival offers a wide variety of music genres, suitable for different types of audiences, and organizers need to contact the different artists for the performances. Interactions begin in October and continue through November, with a concentration on international artists and groups until December. Italian artists are called immediately after the Sanremo Music Festival, which puts a hold on activities until February. The final names of the various artists are agreed between February and April.[1] Due to high turnout of people present at the most recent years, the planners of the event devised the VIP experience and enhanced checkout procedures to shorten wait times.[12]

Being a public event, the planning of the Rugby Sound Festival concerns security as well. The work of the Polizia di Stato, Municipal Police, Carabinieri, Guardia di Finanza, Protezione Civile, Italian Red Cross and Agenzia di Sicurezza, along with the aid of a surveillance system and emergency preparations, is what keeps everything in order and secure. Deputy Commissioner Ilenia Romano has been in charge of security management for the 2023 edition.[13]

The festival's rules, which are updated annually, focus on discouraging inappropriate behavior, including that which involves alcohol, pollution, and violence. It is forbidden for the nearby businesses to serve takeout beverages with an alcohol content higher than 21%, from 18 in the evening to 2 in the morning, for the duration of the festival. Beverages that are exempt from this requirement may only be sold in paper or plastic containers.[14]

Street food parade

The Street food parade is an occurrence organized by "Associazione Culturale Le Officine", a cultural organization that operates mainly in the provinces of Varese and Milan.[15] This event consists of numerous food trucks coming from all over Italy, with particular regard to the Italian traditional street foods. This event was set up in Legnano for the first time in October 2016, and more than 30000 people visited the parade. Because of this unexpected number of people visited the event, many food trucks ran out of food.[16]

The success of this previous event paved the way for the decision of Shining Production to cooperate with the "Associazione Culturale Le Officine" and realize "an event inside the event"[17] for the 2019 edition of the festival: a portion of the island was assigned to the Street food parade for the whole duration of the festival. This allowed the visitors of the festival to try the different street foods while attending the events of the festival.[18] This initiative was appreciated, so in the following editions, Shining Production decided to organize this event again for the successive editions of the festival.[19]
