"Thnks fr th Mmrs" is a single released by the Chicago band Fall Out Boy. It is featured on their 2007 release Infinity on High. The song, according to bassist Pete Wentz in an interview with Kerrang!, refers to a romantic relationship in which the initial sentiments have perished, but both lovers continue to "sleep with each other" to appease their physical desires. The title, "Thnks fr th Mmrs" is simply the words "Thanks for the Memories" with vowels removed, which was done to imply that it was written in text language. The line "He tastes like you, only sweeter" is borrowed from the 2004 film, Closer (in the movie, the line is "he tastes like you, but sweeter). It features Kenneth "Babyface" Edmonds on mandolin and The Movement Orchestra Strings.
As of February 27, the band has finished shooting their new video for the single, as reported by the band on a blog. Pete Wentz has said, "I think this one is going to completely blow "Arms Race" out of the water. The concept is insane. I'll leave it at that." Although the promised release date for the video was originally March 20th, it was announced on the Fall Out Boy website that the video will premiere around the world on the band's website on Friday, March 23rd. The video (which premiered around 11 PM EST) is now up and can be seen on the main page of their official website.
The video has been criticised for having too much Product Placement and showing that the band have sold out. [1] [2]
Video Synopsis
The beginning part of the video sees Patrick whispering to Pete "Are you sure about this?", which prompts Pete to respond 'This guy's a f*%#ing visionary.'
The band begins playing the song on a stage, and before Patrick can get a word out, an unknown voice yells cut! It's the director who is, in fact, a monkey. He walks up to the band and says "You guys are a joke. I should've gotten Panic! at the Disco!" He sits back down and allows the band to keep playing. They play the opening parts of the song and then it shifts to backstage, showing the crew of monkeys outsmarting and getting the best of the band. In one scene a monkey is playing Andy's drums and he tries to take his drum sticks back but Charlie, the band's security manager, comes in and drags Andy away. Patrick playing a game of chess with another monkey and starts out confident, but getting more and more frustrated as the monkey wins the game. It swaps back and forth between the stage performance (with the director showing them how to do cool moves, properly) and backstage. Pete ends up spraying some TAG body spray on himself and a pair of monkey hands come up around him... proving that even monkeys can't resist product placement.
Eventually, Pete has a kissing scene with actress Emily Scott. He leans in to kiss her and the director yells cut, and scolds him for not attempting to kiss her "right". The monkey proceeds to show Pete the proper way, but Pete walks off, insulted.
Pete ends up packing bags to leave, but the actress walks in and kisses Pete. The director is spying on them with a devilish look on his face, the scariest face ever seen on a monkey. (This was an obvious plot to get Pete to stay.)
The band, getting frustrated with the monkeys, continue to play the song on stage. Pete whirls around on stage with his bass, which prompts the director to yell "Primadonna! Stick to the choreography!" and then "Pete! You idiot!" The director leans next to Kim Kardashian and begins stroking her hair. Pete snaps and destroys the set, which prompts the monkeys to run around everywhere in a panic. The closing scene of the video is Pete smashing his bass into the giant B in F.O.B. and knocking it over.
Trivia
- Instead of "Presented by... TAG All-Nighter," this was the original opening logo featuring Hemingway, Pete's dog. Pete said the reason for the change was because of concerns over copyright.
-
Hemingway's Cameo
- In the scene when Pete is getting make-up on his face, the name in his cell phone is William Beckett, the lead singer for The Academy Is.... This is in reference to TAI's video "We've Got a Big Mess on Our Hands," therefore linking the two videos.
- The video prominently featured product placement, including the Nokia 5300 XpressMusic phone, the Chevy Tahoe, and TAG Body Spray's newest scent, "All-Nighter".
- The latter of those companies, TAG, helped assist Fall Out Boy in providing an iPod version and full screen Quicktime version of the video free to visitors to the site.
- Kim Kardashian plays the woman who Pete has to kiss.
- At the conclusion of the video, Pete smashes the large B of FOB, leaving behind the FO, which in internet terminology means Fuck Off. If this is the intention, then this is an obvious sign of his frustration and anger at the monkeys.
- In one scene, you can see on the video markers that the director's name is Alan Furryson, as a spoof of the director Alan Ferguson, who directed Fall Out Boy's This Ain't a Scene, It's an Arms Race music video.
Lyrics
I'm gonna make it bend and break
(it sent you to me without wings)
Say a prayer, but let the good times roll
In case God doesn't show,
let the good times roll (let the good times roll)
And I want these words to make things right
But it's the wrongs that makes the words come to life
Who does he think he is?
If that's the worst you've got,
better put your fingers back to the keys
One night and one more time
Thanks for the memories,
Even though they weren't so great
He tastes like you only sweeter
One night yeah and one more time
Thanks for the memories,
Thanks for the memories
See? He tastes like you only sweeter
Ohhhhhh
Been looking forward to the future
But my eyesight is going bad
And this crystal ball
Is always cloudy except for (except for)
When you look into the past (look into the past)
One night stand. (One night stand, OH!)
One night and one more time
Thanks for the memories,
Even though they weren't so great
He tastes like you only sweeter
One night yeah one more time
Thanks for the memories,
Thanks for the memories
See? He tastes like you only sweeter
ohhhh
They say
I only think in the form of crunching numbers
In hotel rooms,
collecting page-six lovers
Get me out of my mind
Get you out of those clothes
I'm a liner away,
From getting you into the mood
(wa-ooooohhh)
One night and one more time
Thanks for the memories
Even though they weren't so great
He tastes like you only sweeter
One night, yeah, one more time
Thanks for the memories
Thanks for the memories
See? He tastes like you only sweeter
One night and one more time
(one more night, one more time)
Thanks for the memories
Even though they weren't so great
(even though they weren't so great)
He tastes like you only sweeter
One night, yeah, one more time
(one more night, one more time)
Thanks for the memories (for the memories)
Thanks for the memories (for the memories)
See? He tastes like you only sweeter
