[edit]I thought Winfield Scott had the record for longest service in the US Army? -morinao
"He is the only person who has ever reached every rank the Army had to offer." - Did Vessey hold the rank of Sergeant Major? If so, when? —Preceding unsigned comment added by Tpkatsa (talk • contribs) 19:19, 16 April 2010 (UTC)
- The rank of Sergeant Major didn't exist until Vessey was well into his officer career. However it does appear that at least some warrant officer ranks did exist. He also never held the 5-star general rank, although that hasn't been awarded to anyone in more than half a century, so I'd be more likely to let it fall under the "not offered" category. Incorrect information
[edit]Wikipedia article sates "He is the only person who has ever reached every rank the Army had to offer."
There is no record on Wikipedia that General Vessey ever held the rank of Sergeant Major, Command Sergeant Major, any Warrant Officer Rank or General of the Army. As such, the statement in the first paragraph of the article is incorrect.
The fact that he advanced through the enlisted ranks to First Sergeant and from a Battlefield Commission to Four Star General is quite a rare thing and needs no embellishment. Top that off with Chair of the JCS makes it even more special.
