This article should be totally re-written after serious research into the subject.
Here are some corrections: - Grat did not lose his job being suspected of cattle rustling. Most likely the reason was him badly pistol-whipping a prisoner. - The Daltons were never involved in cattle rustling, but were briefly involved in stealing and/or selling stolen horses. Grat was at this time arrested, but released due to lack of evidence. - Grat did not organize the Dalton gang. Bob Dalton was the leader of this gang, which had drifted together. - When the attempted train robbery happened at Alila, the Dalton gang did not yet exist. The robbers did not get as far as the safe, let alone into the passeger cars. Suspicion for the robbery fell on the Daltons as they had a reputation for wildness and had had some trouble before. Bob and Emmett left for the Indian Territory, while Grat and Bill were arrested as accessories. Grat, in fact, had been miles away from the robbery at Fresno. It is a matter of debate if the Daltons were really in this robbery, or not. - Bill Dalton was never a member of the California Legislature, although he may have aspired to it. - Bob Dalton planned the Coffeyville bank raid. Apart from the three Dalton brothers, the other members of the gang were Bill Power and Dick Broadwell. Baldwin was a clerk at the Reed Brothers' store. Ayres was shot below the left eye, and survived. Wakinyela (talk) 12:02, 17 September 2009 (UTC) |
