On 9 June 2024, Islamist militants of the terror group The Resistance Front opened fire on a passenger bus boarded by Hindu pilgrims travelling from the Shiv Khori cave to Katra, Reasi causing it to lose control and crash into a deep gorge.[1] Ten people are confirmed to have been killed in the attack, and an additional 33 were injured.[2][3]

Background

The Jammu and Kashmir region, which both India and Pakistan claim fully but only exert partial control over, has been the pinpoint of a decades-long conflict between the two states. They have fought two wars over the territory since 1947. Since 1989, the conflict evolved into an armed insurgency against Indian control. India has accused Pakistan of backing and harbouring the insurgents, which it denies.[3]

Eight civilians were killed in the territory in the first five months of 2024. Terrorist incidents in the Poonch and Rajouri districts have risen over the past four years, with mainly security forces being targeted.[4]

Attack

At approximately 6:15 p.m. on 9 June 2024, militants armed with firearms ambushed a 53-seater Yatri passenger bus carrying Hindu pilgrims in Teryath village, firing between 25 and 30 gunshots indiscriminately. The driver was struck by gunfire, causing them to lose control and slide into a gorge.[5] Ten people, including a two-year-old and a 14-year-old, were killed and 33 were injured. The victims were from Uttar Pradesh and Rajasthan.[3] A number of the Hindus had gunshot wounds, and empty cartridges were recovered at the scene.[6][7] The Resistance Front, an offshoot of the Lashkar-e-Taiba, a militant group based in Pakistan, claimed the responsibility for the attack.[8]

Three foreign attackers partook in the attack, reportedly using American-made M4 carbine assault rifles. It came a day after Narendra Modi took oath as Prime Minister, causing concern in India's intelligence services.[9]

Aftermath

A search and rescue operation was conducted following the attack, during which security personnel and a military helicopter were dispatched.[10][11] Survivors were treated at nearby hospitals. Top regional administrator Manoj Sinha announced a compensation of 50,000 Indian rupees for the dead and one million rupees for the injured.[3]

Indian police and army launched a manhunt for the attackers.[12][3] At least two of the militants are reportedly hiding in the upper region of Reasi, which is forested and could hamper search attempts.[9]
