"Gata Only" on YouTube |
"Gata Only" is a song by Chilean singers FloyyMenor and Cris MJ. Originally written by Alan Felipe Galleguillos (FloyyMenor) between live performances in his home country Chile, with another verse was written by Christopher Álvarez (Cris MJ) for the duet and production being handled by Big Cvyu, it is a reggaeton song about going after a woman. The solo version was released as a single on 21 December 2023 through UnitedMasters, with the duet version being released on 2 February 2024, serving as the lead single from the former's upcoming debut studio album El Comienzo. A remix version of the song was released on 7 June 2024, with the addition of Puerto Rican singer Ozuna and Brazilian singer Anitta and the absence of Álvarez.
A day after the collaboration was released, Álvarez announced that he had plans to delete it, replacing it with the solo version, after it received negative comments by users. Plans were eventually pulled after being convinced by his fans. Days after, the song went viral in both singers' home country, later debuting atop the Chile Songs chart. Commencing its virality on TikTok, its music video would attain over 135 million views by May 2024, while the song appeared on international song charts and peaking at number one in six countries, as well as the top 10 in over 20 countries. Peaking at number 27 on the Billboard Hot 100, it became the former's first entry on the chart and the latter's second entry.
"Gata Only" also peaked atop song charts in Bolivia, France, Greece, Luxembourg, Peru, and Switzerland. It also attained certifications in Italy (platinum) and Spain (double-platinum).
Background
Galleguillos, who is from Vicuña, Chile,[1] rose to local prominence in his home country prior to releasing "Gata Only", with one of his hit singles being "Pa la Europa".[2] He told Billboard that he wrote "Gata Only" between live performances in a different region in Chile.[3] He would later release it in December 2023 through UnitedMasters, where it would then receive the attention of Álvarez, known for his hit single "Una Noche en Medellín", where he reached out to Galleguillos and told him that he acknowledged the song and wanted to be part of it, which was originally proposed that it would be the remix version.[4][5] Not long after, the original version would be removed from streaming platforms and Galleguillos waited for a few days to release its official duet version.[4]
Composition
Produced by Big Cvyu, "Gata Only" is an upbeat reggaeton song.[6] In the title, the word "Gata" is in Spanish for "cat" but is used in the Latin urban genre to refer to women; its inclusion of "Only" in the title means that the woman both singers are singing about is unique.[7] Gerardo Mejia, who is the Latin A&R lead of UnitedMasters, stated that the lyrics "talk about TikTok, about likes, [and] about following" and that he thinks that "[Galleguillos] hit something that resonates with the kids".[4] The song's refrain became popular; it includes "Mami, te siento lejo', dime dónde estás / Te quiero chingar, te voy a raptar", which translates to "Baby, I feel you far, tell me where you are / I want to have sex with you, I'm going to kidnap you".[8]
Release
A day after the new version of "Gata Only" and its music video was released, which serves as the lead single from the former's upcoming debut studio album El Comienzo,[9] it received negative comments by users, who pointed out that Álvarez's part had too much reverb and thought it sounded like it was made with artificial intelligence.[10] That same day, Álvarez took to Instagram that the duet would be deleted and replaced with a version sung by Galleguillos only, adding that his fans are "in charge". After being convinced by his fans, the duet stayed on platforms, where it became trending in the singers' native country Chile days later.[11] As of May 2024, the music video has amassed over 135 million views.[1] It also received nominations at the 2024 MTV MIAW Awards for Viral Anthem and Supreme Perreo.[12]
Commercial performance
In the United States, "Gata Only" appeared at number eight on the Bubbling Under Hot 100 chart on the issue dated 23 March 2024,[13] before reaching its debut at number 98 on the Billboard Hot 100 with 5.1 million official streams,[14] and would peak at number 27 in its fifth week.[15] On the Hot Latin Songs chart, it debuted at number 46[16] and eventually peaked atop the chart in its seventh week, dethroning Xavi's "La Diabla" after it stayed at the position for 14 total weeks[17][10] and also becoming the first Chilean song since 1999 to reach the chart's top 10, also first number-one song by a Chilean artist since “Peligroso Amor” by Myriam Hernández in 1990.[18] It would also peak atop the Latin Digital Song Sales chart on the issue dated 4 May 2024[19] and the Latin Streaming Songs chart on the issue dated 13 April 2024.[20] It also peaked at number 33 on the Canadian Hot 100.[21]
"Gata Only" debuted at number 149 on the Billboard Global 200 on the issue dated 24 February 2024.[22] In its ninth week, the song would reach the sixth position on the chart, which became both singers' first top 10 single,[23] later peaking at number four.[24] It also appeared at number 174 on the Billboard Global Excl. US chart a week earlier.[25] It would reach its peak on the chart at number three in its 12th week,[26] before descending and remaining at number four on the issues dated 11 May and 18 May 2024.[27][28] It would descend to number five in its 15th week on the chart.[29] On the song chart in Spain, it debuted at the 72nd position,[30] before reaching the 17th position in its next week on the chart.[31] It has since reached its peak at number three[32] and was also certified double-platinum in the country.[33]
"Gata Only" topped the song charts in both singers' native Chile, which is also its debut position,[34] as well as in Bolivia,[35] France,[36] Greece,[37] Luxembourg,[38] Peru,[39] and Switzerland,[40] and also reached the top 10 on other song charts from different countries, including Argentina (3),[41] Austria (6),[42] Colombia (7),[43] Costa Rica (3),[44] Ecuador (2),[45] Italy (5 and a platinum certification),[46][47] Mexico (3),[48] and Portugal (4).[49]

"Gata Only" (remix) on YouTube |
A remix version of "Gata Only" with Puerto Rican singer Ozuna and Brazilian singer Anitta was released on 7 June 2024.[50] Following the worldwide success of the original song, Galleguillos would enlist both singers for the remix, stating that their contributions make it "all bigger and more special", while Ozuna himself admired both Galleguillos and Álvarez's impact in the Latin urban genre.[51]
The absence of Cris MJ from the remix was confirmed by Jorge Álvarez, who is his father, but was also speculated that a music video with all four artists would be released soon.[52] It also received mixed reception from users, stating that the song did not need a remix version or that "without [Álvarez], it is not 'Gata Only'".[53]
