Kim Min-ji (Korean김민지; born 7 May 2004), also known mononymously as Minji, is a South Korean singer. Kim is a member of the South Korean girl group NewJeans, which debuted under ADOR on 22 July 2022.

Life and career

2004–2021: Early life and pre-debut activities

Kim Min-ji was born on 7 May 2004 in Chuncheon, Gangwon, South Korea. Kim attended Hanlim Multi Art School, where she graduated in February 2023.[1] She was a Source Music trainee before the company was acquired by Hybe Corporation in 2019.[2][3]

In July 2021, Kim made a cameo appearance in BTS's 2021 music video for "Permission to Dance", alongside group member Hanni.[4][2] Pre-debut, Kim was also known as "The Girl", the face of Hybe Corporation's 2019 Plus Global Auditions.[5]

2022–present: Debut with NewJeans

Kim in 2022

Kim debuted as a member of the South Korean girl group NewJeans with the surprise-released music video for their debut single "Attention" on 22 July 2022, without any prior promotion or information on the group's lineup.[6][7] NewJeans quickly rose to widespread popularity with the success of their following singles: "Hype Boy", "OMG", and "Ditto", the latter of which featured lyrics written by Kim.[8][9] "Ditto" became NewJeans's first entry on Billboard Hot 100 and won Song of the Year at the MAMA Awards, the Melon Music Awards, the Golden Disc Awards, and the Asia Artist Awards.[10][11][12][13][14] Kim also contributed to the lyrics of their June 2024 Japanese single "Supernatural" which peaked at number 4 on the Oricon charts, number 7 on the Japan Hot 100 charts and at number 7 on the Circle South Korean digital chart, selling over 1 million physical single albums and achieving RIAJ Gold certification.[15][16][17][18]

Kim also sparked public debate over the high standards K-pop idols face when she apologized for asking out loud "What is Kalguksu?" during a livestream in January 2023. In response to persistent negative online comments, she first tried to explain the context of her question, but many netizens were disatisified with her explanation. In response, she apologized and further explained her statement. This apology sparked public discourse over the intense standards that K-pop idols are held to and whether the situation warranted an apology.[19][20][21][22][23][24][25][26]

Endorsements

Kim has topped the South Korean Brand Reputation rankings multiple times since her debut.[27][28] In February 2023, Chanel Korea announced that they had signed Kim as one of their brand ambassadors for the categories of beauty, fashion, and watches and jewelry. Kim is the first person to be named ambassador for all three categories at the same time.[29][30]

Kim had her first solo magazine cover photo shoot as Chanel ambassador for Elle Korea's March 2023 issue with the photographer Park Jong-ha.[31][32] Later that year, Kim was photographed by Ahn Joo-young for the digital cover for the October 2023 issue of Harper's Bazaar Korea in a campaign for Chanel Jewelry and Watches.[33] She then appeared on the November 2023 digital cover of Harper's Bazaar Thailand wearing Chanel once again photographed by Ahn Joo-young.[34] That same month, she appeared on the E-Cover of Esquire Korea's November 2023 issue in a campaign for Moncler x Palm Angels photographed by Chae Dae-han.[35] Kim then appeared on the December 2023 digital edition cover for Marie Claire Korea in a pictorial titled "Dreamy Beauty" for Chanel Beauty photographed by Go Won-tae.[36][37]

Kim also featured on the digital cover for the January 2024 issue of Harper's Bazaar Korea in a campaign for Chanel Beauty's Les Beiges Healthy Glow line.[38] Additionally, Kim was seated in the front row at the Chanel S/S 2024 couture show for her first fashion show as a Chanel ambassador representing Korea.[39] Kim also featured on the May 2024 cover of Elle Korea's special digital project "Elle D Edition" promoting her campaign with Chanel Beauty's N°1 de Chanel Red Camellia Serum photographed once again by Go Won-tae.[40][41]

Since 2023, Kim has been the face of the Seoul Jazz Festival, appearing on magazines to promote the event. She appeared on the cover of W Korea's special edition for the 15th anniversary of the Seoul Jazz Festival as well as the cover of the W Korea special edition for the 2024 festival.[42][43]

Kim also appeared in a March 2024 video campaign for the South Korean National Election Commission (NEC) broadcast on television and on the NEC official youtube channel to encourage South Korean citizens to vote in the 22nd parliamentary election.[44]
