Chak De India (Hindi: चक दे इन्डिया, Urdu: چک دے انڈیا, English: Buck Up India or Come On India) is a Hindi film, directed by Shimit Amin starring Shahrukh Khan and Vidya Malvade in lead roles. The film is Amin's second directorial venture after Ab Tak Chhappan which was produced by Ram Gopal Varma.

Plot

The Film is loosely based on true story of Indian Hockey player Mir Ranjan Negi. Negi was the unfortunate goalkeeper of the Indian Hockey Team which lost 7-1 to Pakistan in Asian Games Hockey Final, back in 1982. Though the loss was engineered by faults of the entire team, Negi the goalkeeper was dubbed the villain, and was even tagged as a traitor. Such accuasations brought about an untimely End of Negi's international career. Negi redeemed his lost glory 16 years later, when he coached the Indian Men's Hockey team in Bangkok Asian Games 1998, where the team fetched Gold medal. He replicated the success with Indian Women's Hockey Team as well in Manchester Commonwealth Games of 2002. Mir Ranjan Negi was hired as the Technical Advisor by Aditya Chopra. Shamita Shetty's name features in the opening credits of the film. She trained both Shah Rukh and the female actors who portrayed Hockey players. Shah Rukh Khan plays the role of coach Kabir Khan, who guides the Indian Women's Hockey Team to win Hockey World Championship.

The film starts with a Hockey match. Captain Kabir Khan (Shahrukh Khan) misses a goal at the end of the match which causes the team to lose the game. The Indian media make out that Kabir Khan was responsible. Seven years later, Kabir returns with a proposal to coach the Indian Women's Hockey team. The Hockey Association members re-buff his proposal and declare that they will not help him in his cause. Kabir takes the challenge and goes to the National Hockey Camp where he is introduced to the 16 young girls who played for their respective states. Kabir starts coaching them with a dream that the team will win the Hockey World Cup for India and he will finally be free of any conviction put against him.

Some members of the team resent him but he finally gets through to them. The team rally and convince the Association to go for the World Cup held in Australia who also happen to be the defending champions. In their first match, they lose to the defending champions but slowly the team grow momentum and start winning matches. Finally the team gets to the final and they beat Australia in a tie-breaker.

The players and Kabir are ecstatic at their victory and are welcomed back as heroes. More importantly, Kabir returns to his home after seven years where the residents greet him with love and affection.

Production

Shahrukh Khan is seen sporting a beard in the film. Shahrukh plays a guy who is hurt in life. The team arrives in Australia to play for the women’s world cup and that is when their struggle begins for dignity and self respect.

Neetu Chandra auditioned and got the part of the leading lady of the film. She was later replaced due to unknown reasons [1].

The film, produced by Yash Chopra, has the duo, Salim and Sulaiman composing the music. The music of the film is said to in sync with the film. Editing will be handled by Amin himself who previously worked as an editor before venturing into direction. Cinematography is handled by Vishal Sinha who previously worked with Amin in Ab Tak Chappan. Sudip Chatterjee is in helm of Cinematography. Jaideep Sahni writes the film [2].

The girls are being put through a rigorous exercise regime and all their activities are being shot to be later telecasted in a reality show format playing a part in the film's promotion later on [3]. To promote the film later on, Aditya Chopra, the producer of the film shot a few behind the scenes segments to be used as teasers during film promotions. Shooting for these scenes took place at Yash Raj Studios during the month of June 2006 [4].

The entire film is shot at several locations in Australia including Melbourne, Sydney and Brisbane [5]. Yash Raj Films had previously shot Salaam Namaste in Australia. The first schedule of the film has been shot at studios in Mumbai, India. The team of the film later headed to Australia for the second schedule of the film [6]. Yash Raj Films released the film on August 10, 2007 [7]. The first trailer for the film was released on 15 June, 2007 with the release of Jhoom Barabar Jhoom. Later on, the promo trailer shown with Jhoom Barabar Jhoom was pulled because of a lukewarm response.

Reviews

Chak De India has opened to mixed reviews. Rediff considered the movie "a good ride".[8] SearchIndia.com found Shah Rukh Khan's performance passionless and expressed a disappointment in the movie.[9] Movie critic Taran Adarsh (indiafm.com) gave the film 2 out 5 stars.[10]

According to BoxOfficeIndia, Chak De India opened to a mixed response, lower in single-screen theatres but higher in multiplexes.[11] After the the below expectation results of Ta Ra Rum Pum and the debacle of Jhoom Barabar jhoom Chak De India got an average opening but it was clear by the Friday evening shows that the film would do well and the collections on Saturday just confirmed that. The all India average opening on Friday stood at around 60% but on Saturday and Sunday the collections were 90-100% at major centres. The smaller centres did not zoom up but still did well enough to hold their collections. The film has been released on approx 400 cinemas all over India with a major chunk of the screenings in metroes and A centres..

arabar Joom, Yashraj Films are back and have resumed dishing out hits with Chak De India. The film held rock steady on the dreaded Monday with collections of 60-70%. There is expectation of the collections to rise over the weekend again as there is appreciation for the film from the public. Chak De India will emerge a hit or better in Mumbai, Delhi/UP(UP is only fair but Delhi/NCR is strong), East Punjab, CI, Nizam and Mysore. The other circuits will depend on how well they sustain collections from here on. But it's unlikely to have a losing circuit as even Bihar may notch up 18-20 lakhs from the 7 prints sent to the circuit. Overseas the film has disappointed with its start but the makers expect it to hold its collection well into the second week.
