Blackout is the fifth studio album by American pop singer Britney Spears. It is scheduled for release on October 29 2007 in the U.K and October 30 2007 in the U.S. and Canada. It is her first studio album of new material since In the Zone in 2003.

Album Information

The album is Spears' first studio album in 4 years since In the Zone. The release date was scheduled for November 12, 2007 worldwide. The album date was pushed ahead to October 30, 2007, due to illegal releases of tracks from the album on the internet, as alleged by the record label. Jive Records announced that the album would be named "Blackout" referring to "blocking out negativity and embracing life fully".

Many fans have been disappointed at the choice of album cover and have made several online petitions aimed at Jive Records to change it.

Internet leaks

The album was originally due to be released on November 12, 2007 in the UK but due to leaks on the internet (ten of the songs were leaked) and the success of "Gimme More" it will now come out two weeks earlier on October 29, 2007. Jive Records stated that due to numerous unauthorized online leaks, Jive is doing everything possible to prevent and avoid any further illegal distribution of songs including moving up the worldwide release date of the album to October 30, 2007.

Internet blogger Perez Hilton is being sued by Zomba Label Group for posting at least ten unfinished or complete tracks on his website.

Singles

• "Gimme More" is the first single from Blackout, Spears performed the song at the 2007 MTV Video Music Awards on September 9, 2007. It was released earlier to radio stations on August 30, 2007 and as a digital download on iTunes on September 27, 2007. Written by James Washington, Keri Hilson, Marcella Araica and Nate Hills, "Gimme More" became Spears' biggest hit since "...Baby One More Time", having reached number three on the Billboard Hot 100., hit No. 1 in the Canadian Hot 100, and went straight into the top 5 in many European countries and Australia.

• Websites such as X17online.com have claimed the second single from the album will be "Piece of Me" and claim that Spears will be shooting a video for it soon.
