A Metrolink Tram crossing the Manchester Ship Canal at Pomona, Greater Manchester

Pomona Metrolink Station is a Manchester Metrolink station seving the Pomona Docks area. Pomona is Metrolink's only purpose built elevated tram stop, sitting at the end of the viaduct over the Manchester Ship Canal. The stop serves an area around the former Pomona Docks, which is to yet to be redeveloped. Pomona is the only station on the Metrolink network to be built with ticket barriers; however these are currently not in use. The change from paper tickets currently being used on the system to more rigid card tickets being dispenced by newer ticket machines may mean that a barrier system will be used in future at the main interchanges.

The station opened as part of the first stage of the Eccles extension via Salford Quays in 1999. The station is located within Zone H.

Allowance has been made in the design of the viaduct supporting the line for an extension through the Trafford Park industrial estate to the Trafford Centre providing the funding can be provided by the government.

Pomona Docks

Pomona Docks is a set of dockyards on the Manchester Ship Canal located just in the borough of Trafford, Greater Manchester. The official terminus of the canal being several hundred meters further down the canal, at a point where a footbridge crosses the canal.

The Pomona dockyards were once some of the busiest dockyards in the United Kingdom. All of the warehouses that once lined the dockside, have been demolished, and modern office blocks have been and still are being built although depite the excellent transport links to Manchester City Centre, redevelopment seems to have stalled. The area is owned by the Peel Group.

Pomona Dock is also the site of Pomona Lock, one of the few lockgates that connect the Manchester Ship Canal with the Bridgewater Canal.

It is no longer possible for large boats to sail into Pomona Docks, as the swinging roadbridge that separates Salford Quays from Pomona Docks is now permanently closed. Only small pleasure craft are able to pass under it.
