Erica Hahn (a.k.a. "Dr. McHardcore" and/or "The New Burke") is a fictional character on the ABC television series Grey's Anatomy. The character is portrayed by actor Brooke Smith. Her character joined the main cast in the fourth season[1].
Overview
Dr. Hahn is a long-time rival of Dr. Preston Burke in the field of cardiothoracic surgery, dating back to their days at Johns Hopkins Medical School, where she graduated second after Burke. She was a cardiothoracic attending surgeon at Mercy West Hospital. In Season 2, she and Burke fought over a donor's heart because of faulty information from Izzie pertaining to Denny's condition, and she was contacted for a consult on Harold O'Malley's valve replacement. She and Burke have a love-hate friendship over their competition, and though she would die before saying it in front of him, Dr. Hahn respects and admires Burke tremendously, and she told Cristina that if she ever learned anything from Burke, she would be "half the surgeon that Burke is, and that's pretty damn good". Hahn joined the staff of Seattle Grace Hospital in the Season 4 Halloween episode, "Haunt You Everyday", after performing a heart transplant at the request of Chief Richard Webber. As such, she is currently Head of Cardiothoracic Surgery at Seattle Grace and appropriately dubbed "The New Burke".
Currently, Hahn is antagonizing Cristina Yang who she expresses a deep disapproval for. [2]. Mark Sloan develops a huge crush on her because she is sassy. When he asked her out she told him that he only thought that he was attracted to her because of her talents and because she does not have a thing for him. [3]. While Dr. Hahn has rejected Sloan on several different occasions, he continues as of lately to flirt with her.
In episode 410, while Hahn, Sloan, Torres, Karev, and Stevens are working on a patient, Sloan yet again hits on Hahn with a sensitive note, however Hahn fails to budge. Later on, Hahn regards his looks as the reason why he gets away with much of his offensive banters.
Later that night, she lowers her guard to ask both Dr. Torres and Dr. Sloan if they would want to get a drink with her. Torres translated to Sloan that she was reaching out for a friend. At the same instance, Dr. McSteamy says to Hahn that he can't promise to not hit on her and Torres confirms that.
Although Hahn has been able to stick to her story that she doesn't find Sloan attractive, In the season 4 finale, it is revealed that she and Dr. Calliope Torres have formed a new friendship that is revoloved around being badass women. Also, she admits to Sloan that she finds him attractive, but since they work together, she will respect their potential for a platonic friendship and leave her feelings outside of the hospital's world. At the end of the episode, she and Calliope walks out into the night and leave Mark's sorry ass behind.
