Chino High School (CHS) is located in Chino, California and is one of the four regular high schools in the Chino Valley Unified School District. The school was established in 1897, making it one of the oldest schools in Southern California. Chino High moved from its original location in 1951 to its present location on Park Place and Tenth Street.[1]
Departments
Chino High School has a wide variety of academic departments.
The math department, headed by Joseph Raya, includes math levels from beginning math to Calculus, as well as statistics.
The history department includes U.S. History and World History, as well as government classes.
The English department, headed by Michelle Dane, includes levels 9 through 12, offering Advanced Placement, honors, and college prep classes in each. In addition, the English department offers reading classes for students as needed.
The science department, headed by Jackie Wendling, includes Introductory Physical Science, biology, chemistry, and physics for 9th, 10th, 11th, and 12th grades respectively.
The art department includes Art Design, Art Fundamentals, and 3D Design.
The drama department, headed by Frank Smouse, includes Introduction to Theater, Advanced Theater, and Production and Performance.
The foreign languages department includes four levels of Spanish and German classes.
The music department, headed by Doug Bowden, includes concert choir, concert band, symphonic band, wind ensemble, pageantry, percussion, and marching band. In addition, the music department is in charge of the 77TH Cavalry Marching Band, a 3-time winner of the SCSBOA Championships in the 6A division and holds the title of the 2003/2007 Fiesta Bowl Grand Master Champions. The 77TH Cavalry hosts their own marching band competition, the Chino Invitational Band Review and Field Show Tournament, on the first Saturday in November each year. The event draws over 50 marching bands from all over Southern California to compete in parade and field show competition. The event started in 1971.
The electives department includes a wide variety of curricular and extra-curricular classes, including leadership, AVID, work experience, technology, agriculture, auto body, and many other classes. Daura Beard, an excellent English 10 Honors teacher, currently teaches AVID as well for those who wish to prepare themselves for college and she is doing a great job at it. In addition, teacher's assistance (T.A.) falls under the electives category.
The physical education department includes standard P.E. classes for all grades, as well as classes for specific sports. In addition, the physical education department is in charge of P.E. classes under special categories, such as cheerleading, marching band, and pageantry.
Sports
Chino High School is a member of the California Interscholastic Federation Sierra League in the southern section.
Alma Mater
The alma mater of Chino High School is sung or accompanied by the melody of "Auld Lang Syne".
