RTFM pointers for Flag templates

This thread is addressed to:

Hello, fellow editors ...

It has come to my attention that some (more experienced) editors find the language of {{Flag-article}} and {{Flag-editor}} to be ... condescending ... I was chided for suggestion RTFM to one, but it did raise the issue that the templates need to point people at WP:FLAG-PROTOCOL so that they will see the Big Picture.

Yes, references to WP:COI and WP:COPYVIO may not be appropriate for a particular article, but people need to understand that this is a generic template, and it needs a context, i.e. the assumption that the editor whose article is being flagged is a newbie may be inappropriate in some cases.

To this end, I propose adding the following to both templates ...

"To better understand why I have used this template, please read Flag templates for deletion warnings ... I realize that some of the expressed possible concerns may not be appropriate in this case."

I haven't had long to think about it, and I wanted some suggestions/feedback on the RTFM wording so as not to appear ... patronizing. :-)

For example, should the pointer be to Flag templates for deletion warnings, or to WP:FLAG-PROTOCOL ... the former is shorter and easier to digest, while the latter goes into more detail, but it's kinda overwhelming on the first reading ... note that the former does reference the latter in its first paragraph.

Anywho, that is why I have contacted you, because I need to hear from Inclusionists as well as Deletionists if there is to be a balance that meets consensus ... Happy Editing! — 151.200.237.53 (talk · contribs) 23:46, 9 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I apologize but I don't understand the question. Are you trying to tell me I have done something incorrectly or that you are asking for advice on something?--Kumioko (talk) 00:07, 10 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]
No problem ... I'm asking folks for feedback on the wording I want to add to the two templates ... I'm just contacting editors with whom I've had contact in the past six months. :-) — 151.200.237.53 (talk) 00:12, 10 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I like your wording and it certainly can't hurt. I don't think we'll ever be able to eliminate hurt feelings or folks talking offense, such is the nature of the written word when we use it as primary communication. But it's always good to try and pointing someone towards the flag protocol language seems like a good step towards better understanding. Or, we could just throw a bunch of emoticons on the ends of each sentence. ;-) Nobody of Consequence (talk) 00:17, 10 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]
