Pro Evolution Soccer 2009 is an association football video game in the Pro Evolution Soccer series by Konami. It has been announced that Lionel Messi will feature on the cover of the game in all regions.

Pro Evolution Soccer creator Shingo 'Seabass' Takatsuka has revealed that he's gone back to the drawing board for PES 2009 following the criticism of the 2008 edition. Seabass hasn't been content to rest on his laurels and had begun work on PES 2009 shortly after the release of the 2008 edition, where he promises a 'complete overhaul' of the game in absolutely every respect.

Release

Pro Evolution Soccer 2009 had been confirmed for release on PC, PlayStation 3, PlayStation 2, PlayStation Portable, Wii and Xbox 360 in the third-quarter of 2008.[3]

W.E.N.B will be the first to playtest the game on August 18, 2008.[4]

New additions

Gameplay has been improved for Pro Evolution Soccer 2009, with key additions such as an improved Teamvision system, with tactics changing according to situation, better off-the-ball movement such as running to receive passes, etc and the AI recognizing strategies that work and it accumulates data on an ongoing basis within Master League and League modes. Another new addition is the readjustments for ball movements, and PES2009 has new air resistance calculations for the trajectory of the ball. The heaviness of the ground also impacts the gameplay this year, which means passes will be heavier. There will also be new friction routines to affect ball movement in terms of ground conditions, backspin routines are calculated so that ball slows accordingly, and the bounce of the ball can be used more effectively: players can flick the ball up to tee a shot, or to lift it over a defender’s trailing leg. Skills are now integrated more into the game. If a player has the ability, they will be able to perform deft turns. There will also be adjusted controls to make close control more intuitive.

Visuals are also improved in PES2009. There will be graphic depictions of weather conditions unique to each stadium, much more detailed lighting effects that mimic the time of day more closely, and all new player models in game. Everything is reworked for additional detail. In addition to that, more stadiums are added including Wembley Stadium and more. More animations are added, including Cristiano Ronaldo's open legged stance before a free kick and other animations which make the game flow more, with players now stumbling and placing a hand down so as to keep running. LED adboards are also set to make its debut on the Xbox 360 and PS3 versions. New camera angles are also in PES2009 and a new, clearer menu system is in, too.

The edit mode has been reworked slightly, with the pixel paint editor returning and the ability to add music and chants into the game.

Master League has more intuitive menus and a loyalty and negotiations system.

A new game mode, 'Become a Legend', is added into PES2009. In this the player gets to create a midfielder or a striker to control throughout his career, and catching the eye of other clubs to move higher up the league chain. Unlike FIFA's Be A Pro Mode, which has a time limit of 4 seasons, PES2009's version has an infinite number of seasons. Before the mode was announced, a watered-down version called "Fantasista Mode", was in the PS2 version of Winning Eleven 10 J-League, a version of PES only released in Japan. With the new mode, you control the destiny of a midfield/striking star similar to FIFA 08's Be a Pro mode. The player works within the team structure, akin to popular ‘Fix’ mode – assisting play, scoring goals, etc The mode will use a default vertical view, similar to the one used in Be a Pro. There will be dedicated development data for player as game progresses. There will also be a full range of transfer opportunities: fail to play well and you will be demoted to bench or even transferred.

The mode will also support online, with the ability to use your player in the single player game, and you can play online with other ‘fixed’ position friends, with intricate play and teamwork rewarded with PES points. You can also upload finest moments for others to view and rate.

The new stadiums are:

Konami will get into further development for more stadiums.

It is thought that the Luzhniki and Ernst-Happel Stadia have been included mainly on the basis that they have both recently staged major football events, these being the 2007/08 UEFA Champions League and the UEFA Euro 2008 finals respectivley. In UEFA Euro 2008 the Tivoli Neu stadium also hosted several group D matches.

Leaks

[7] On July 23, 2008 there was a huge leak of information posted by Pro Evo Live League UK The leak had information about the gameplay, game modes, graphics, teams, stadiums, players, and online play. One huge part of the leak was there is going to be a "Become A Legend" mode. This mode is like the "Be A Pro" mode in FIFA 08.
