re homosexual

is he really gay?

It seems strange to list that he "is a homosexual" right next to "romantically linked" to a female actress. This would perhaps be "bisexual" if true. I am also not sure if there has been discussion elsewhere for style, but perhaps "gay" is a more appropriate/accepted word for this sexual orientation? "Outting" (if he has not come out himself) also remains controversial, and while I feel that people who are wealthy and famous who serve as role-models and basically give up their privacy should not expect to be protected against exposure of sexual orientation, others feel differently. There appear to be issues that need to be addressed here.

I have removed the claim that Rhys Meyers is openly bisexual. Rhys Meyers has never publicly claimed to be bisexual and has stated that he has never been romantically involved with another man. When questioned in interviews he has said that anything is possible in the future, but he is certainly not an "out" bisexual at present and so should not be referred to as such here. CKarnstein 16:44, 15 October 2005 (UTC)[reply]
Rhys Meyers has said different things in dfferent interviews. It would appear he has an open mind on these things.

Jonathan Rhys Meyers is not gay...or is he? He has always been kind of odd and unique, when it came to dressing up......and the latest talk is that his girlfriend assaulted him.......? Clearly, he is strange, contrary to other male actors........but, everyone has their share of controversy.

The point is, he is not openly bisexual. If he ever does come out publicly as being bisexual then the article can be changed to reflect that fact, but as things stand he is not openly bisexual and the article should not claim that he is. I have once again removed the inaccurate information. CKarnstein 05:03, 31 October 2005 (UTC)[reply]

From an interview:

He camps it up both on and off the screen, not that this deters his female devotees. “Because of doing Velvet Goldmine I was always seen as quite camp and quite homosexual,” he says. “Ewan (McGregor, his co-star) hated doing it, hated playing anyone gay. He’s really really insecure with his sexuality.”
He toys with, even encourages, rumours of his bisexuality. I ask him about a quote he made in the past: “Sometimes I speak to girls…and the question comes up, ‘Are you straight or gay?’…I give them a wry smile and a little wink.” So, what’s the reality? Rhys Meyers winks, gives me a smug, self-satisfied grin and changes the subject.

He's totally bi. Awesome.

Yet another celeb article where all the crazed hetero fans will delete any mention of gayness until he finally comes out on the cover of People, like Clay Aiken. Why is his NEVER HAPPENED "relationship" with Scarlett Johansson even mentioned? Because it was a rumor? His homosexuality is also a rumor, so, by the Scarlett standard, it should be in the article too. What about the fact that she said she could NEVER date him because he's "like a girl" and basically TOO GAY?!? Yet another instance of Wikipedian homophobia and "straight-washing" even the most flamboyant celebrities. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 69.123.89.154 (talk) 02:28, 2 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]

He has said in many interviews that doesn't erase the possibility that he could end up in bed with a man someday, plus on an interview for "Out", when they announced him as the "straight guy of the week" he claimed that was new for him since no one had ever called him straight. Not only that, the interview posted up there also gives us more information about his bisexuality. Although he is not officially bisexual, something about this controversy should be at least cited in the article. It is a fact that's almost confirmed and already too important to be completely ignored.

SOMETHING SHOULD BE STATED IN THE ARTICLE. This is a little pathetic, trying to ignore all of this. http://www.answers.com/topic/list-of-bisexual-people http://www.jrmfansite.org/2005/01/154 http://www.contactmusic.com/new/xmlfeed.nsf/mndwebpages/meyers%20wants%20more%20gay%20roles_1000385

I completely agree. This needs to be at least cited in the article.

I don't agree. Those interviews appear to be slanted and cannot be taken as absolute fact. The moment JRM says "I am bisexual" or "I fancy men" should be the day when those interviews can be cited in the article. As it stands, during his RTE Late Late Show interview back in 2005, he came out and said "I am straight for the record."

I watched that on youtube, and didn't catch it Andral 02:31, 10 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Surname

Is his surname Rhys-Meyers or Rhys Meyers? Could it be standardised through the article, or a note added explaining that he is known by both? Njál 01:28, 23 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]

His surname is not hyphenated. This is direct from Rhys Meyers himself in response to a question at the Golden Globes Awards backstage interviews.

If 'anything is possible' in the future he would be bi.. But whatever! Is his surname pronounced like 'Reese' Meyers or like 'Rice' Meyers?

If it is supposed to be the Welsh it appears to be, then it is pronounced "reece".FlaviaR (talk) 09:29, 20 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]

If his surname is not hyphenated, the article must be re-named. If you can source his quote at the Golden Globes, do so in explaining the move, and move it. Also, guys, sign your posts. LeSaint 00:48, 29 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Where does the Rhys come from?

I understand he gets the Meyers name from his mother and thus, technically, he cannot have "changed" his name, as the article says, to Meyers as Meyers would be on his birth certificate. Nonetheless, where does the Rhys part come from?

"Meyers" is his mother's maiden name. His birth certificate presumable has his surname as "O'Keeffe", since that is his father's last name (and mother's married name). I have never heard any explanation for the "Rhys" part, though. CKarnstein 04:52, 20 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Private Life

I have removed the "Private Life" section. It consisted of a single sentence tying him to Toni Collette, but their relationship ended seven years ago. Rhys Meyers has since dated several other women and Collette has married, so I think it is a bit misleading to focus on their past romance here. Someone could write a more up-to-date account of his love life, but I don't think this would add anything worthwhile to the article. As Rhys Meyers is unmarried and his love life has not been the subject of much public interest, I don't see any point in mentioning it here. CKarnstein 05:03, 20 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I disagree with you, I found that piece of information interesting and it surprised me. Articles should be expanded upon, not deleted, I kindly invite you to expand on that part since you seem to be quite knowledgeable in that area. Gryffindor 00:53, 23 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]

According to a close member of his family the Rhys doesn't come from anywhere in particular. it just sounded good

Inconsistency & unnecessary info

Does that information about his penis really have to be here? And secondly, why would it be under "early life"? Also, Bending it like Beckham is referenced twice, but with two different years (picture caption: 2003, text: 2002). 80.43.10.57 21:56, 16 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I am curious about the fact that his mother died 3 days after he was supposedly arrested on Nov 18, 2007, when he just did a live interview on "The View" on Nov 21, 2007, which would make it the day she died, how can this be?

Photo

I have restored the "Bend it Like Beckham" photo that used to be at the top of the article. It seems to have been removed accidentally by an anonymous user a few edits back. CKarnstein 06:42, 17 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Why isn't his new show on there? It's called 'The Tudors' on showtime. Iman S1995 02:59, 10 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Confusion about relationships

I know that on here he quotes saying that he is currently not dating anyone; yet in two recent publications (Marie Clarie and OK! Magazine) it claims that he is dating "someone" and Reena Hammer. Confusion? —The preceding unsigned comment was added by Diet (talkcontribs) 01:45, 23 March 2007 (UTC).[reply]

Who he is currently dating or not dating or who he has been rumored to be dating is not something that this article should focus on. It's not encyclopedic unless one of his affairs causes a particular, multi-documented news story.LeSaint 01:03, 29 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Early Life

The articel claims he was born in County Cork, but then moved to County Cork a year after his birth. Where was he born? Did he move within the county after a year? Any information about what town? omnijohn 20:18, 20 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Fair use rationale for Image:Steerpike.jpg

Image:Steerpike.jpg is being used on this article. I notice the image page specifies that the image is being used under fair use but there is no explanation or rationale as to why its use in this Wikipedia article constitutes fair use. In addition to the boilerplate fair use template, you must also write out on the image description page a specific explanation or rationale for why using this image in each article is consistent with fair use.

Please go to the image description page and edit it to include a fair use rationale. Using one of the templates at Wikipedia:Fair use rationale guideline is an easy way to insure that your image is in compliance with Wikipedia policy, but remember that you must complete the template. Do not simply insert a blank template on an image page.

If there is other fair use media, consider checking that you have specified the fair use rationale on the other images used on this page. Note that any fair use images uploaded after 4 May, 2006, and lacking such an explanation will be deleted one week after they have been uploaded, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you.

Pronunciation

It's not obvious how to pronounce "Rhys". (Is it like rice, reese, riss? I don't know.) It would be nice if someone who knows how it's pronounced added this to the article somewhere. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 66.166.47.147 (talk) 15:10, 21 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Androgeny?

I removed the part about him being best known for "Androgenous appearance". Based on the cited article this seems to be more a directorial, artsy, film school kind of thing that transfers to the screen. He looks like a man to me and anyone with eyes. He looks a little queer, but not at all like a woman. If you don't know him from any of his work, you probably won't know him as "that androgenous looking guy", you just won't know him. 67.103.26.174 (talk) 06:47, 28 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]
