Superjail! is an American animated television series produced by Augenblick Studios. The pilot was shown on Adultswim.com on May 10, 2007 and aired on television on May 13, 2007, with the actual season starting September 28, 2008. Superjail is characterized by its surreal shifts in setting and plot, and its extreme graphic violence. The show centers around events that take place in a rather unusual jail.

Setting and premise

The majority of Superjail! is set inside the titular prison. Externally, Superjail is built inside a massive volcano, but internally it seems to constitute its own psychedelic reality, where the fabric of time and space is extremely fluid and changes at the whim of the Warden. Superjail's inmate population is stated by Jared to be in excess of 70 thousand, although the show's creators mention that the jail processes "billions of inmates".[1] The prisoners contained within suffer horrific deaths on a regular basis, usually as a side effect of the Warden's crazy schemes.

Characters

  • The Warden (voiced by David Wain) is the extremely eccentric and perpetually manic proprietor of Superjail. The Warden is clad in a purple suit with a yellow undershirt, a traditional bow tie, gray gloves, and wide yellow glasses. The Warden inherited the jail from his father and changed it into the psychedelic correctional facility it is now. The Warden has a general distaste for ordinary prison - as he explains it, he has sworn to "perfect the art of incarceration". The Warden believes (perhaps rightfully) that everything in Superjail is under his control, often touting things that go wrong as his idea. He has an unrequited crush on Alice. The Warden has been described as a "sadistic Willy Wonka".[2]
  • Jared (voiced by Teddy Cohn) is Superjail's uptight accountant. He has a very large head. He is always worrying about what the Warden will do next to jeopardize the budget. He's a recovering alcoholic and suffers from several other addictions including cocaine and cigarettes. He is a typical sycophant who agrees with everything the Warden says and compliments him on all his plans.
  • Alice (voiced by Christy Karacas) is the extremely well-built female guard in Superjail, and apparently the only guard aside from Jailbot. Alice is in charge of "taking care" of the inmates, which often involves their mutilation or murder. Her masculine manner, deep voice and a bulge in her skirt indicate that she may be a transsexual (of which the Warden appears to be unaware).
  • The Twins (voiced by Richard Mathar) are two blond identical twins who inhabit Superjail. They wear Logan's Run-style sandman uniforms. Both have black unibrows and supernumerary nipples. The Twins have green blood and enjoy interfering with the Warden's plans. Their relation to Superjail is unspecified, though they apparently are part of a much larger community, all of whom look exactly like they do. The two are geniuses and have a hidden lab beneath Superjail. The two have unexplained powers which, among other things, allow them to teleport anywhere they wish, change outfits instantly, and shrink in size.
  • Jailbot is a tombstone-shaped levitating robot that performs menial tasks in and around Superjail, such as piloting vehicles and transporting prisoners. Jailbot is mute, but possesses a monochrome screen that displays an expressive face. He has two compartments on its sides that hold a seemingly limitless amount of objects used to perform his duties. Jailbot was created by the Warden, whom he views as his father.
  • Jacknife (voiced by Christy Karacas) is a low-level criminal who gets captured by Jailbot and taken to Superjail at the beginning of every episode. He likewise escapes near the end, though there are a few exceptions. Jacknife only communicates in grunts and groans. He appears to have a soft spot towards children, as he has been shown attempting to comfort children who accidentally become involved in his criminal schemes.
  • The Doctor is what might pass for a surgeon in what might pass for an infirmary inside of Superjail. He is called upon by the Warden a number of times to help in his schemes, such as changing Jared's appearance to that of a hardened criminal. He uses very unorthodox methods on his patients, including subjecting them to Clockwork Orange-like TV brainwashing sessions or turning them into living video chat systems for his conversations with the Warden.

Episode list

There is currently one season planned for Superjail, which includes ten episodes,[3] excluding the pilot episode. Episodes first premiere online on Adult Swim Video. Episodes are also available for purchase in the iTunes Store.

The episodes listed below are ordered chronologically by airdate,[4] which differs from the production order.

Season 1: 2007-2008

# Title Original airdate Production code
0"Bunny Love"May 13 2007000
The Warden plans to dress the prisoners in bunny suits, but the Twins interfere with the purchase order, making half of the order wolf suits. When dressed in these suits, the prisoners take on the characteristics of their respective animals, causing a bloodbath. Unlike the regular episodes, this episode opens with the song "Rubber Bullets" by 10cc.
1"Superbar"September 28 2008101
The Warden opens a bar in Superjail, the Superbar, in an attempt to get a date with Alice. Things take a turn for the worse when Jared falls off the wagon and becomes drunk. An unfinished version of this episode aired on April 1 2008 as part of Adult Swim's April Fools' Day sneak peek at upcoming shows.
2"Combaticus"October 5 2008102
The Warden and his staff unearth an ancient fighting arena. It is reactivated in an effort to decrease the high inmate depression level and becomes a Thunderdome-like chance for the inmates to fight to the death for freedom. The Twins attempt to sabotage the arena with Combaticus, a fighter created from their DNA.
3"Ladies Night"October 12 2008104
A carrier ship for the female prison "Ultraprison" crash-lands in Superjail. Ultraprison's "Mistress" and the Warden arrange a ball for their inmates as part of a bet to see which set of convicts can act more refined. The Warden gets to keep the female prisoners if he wins the bet; if the Mistress wins, she gets Superjail.
4"Cold-Blooded"October 19 2008110
An Ed Gein-like serial killer is mistakenly captured by Jailbot instead of Jacknife (who was skinned and tied to a wall by said serial killer), putting Superjail on edge. To investigate his grip on the inmates, the Warden sends Jared undercover as a inmate. When the new arrival accidentally kills himself, Jared takes the credit and becomes admired by inmates as Superjail's most violent resident. Meanwhile, the Twins hack into Jailbot and control him like a video game.
5"Don't Be a Negaton"October 26 2008105
The Warden invites his favorite motivational speaker D.L. Diamond to Superjail. D.L. Diamond puts on a grand party and lecture in Superjail, talking about how he was kidnapped by aliens Galactoids and liberated from negative thoughts, that were actually aliens Negatons trapped inside his body. Everybody in Superjail becomes obsessed with D.L. Diamond, but Jared suspects that D.L. is hiding something.
6"Terrorarium"November 2 2008106
The Warden holds a science fair and declares himself the winner for inventing the Terrorarium, a miniature jungle filled with miniature dangerous insects. Five prisoners (including Jacknife) are shrunk down and sent inside to compete for their lives, the prize being growth serum that will allow the winner to escape. However, the Twins steal the serum and decide to have a little fun by giving it to the stressed out and overworked Jared.
7"Mr. Grumpy-Pants"November 9 2008107
Jacknife's latest crime results in him accidentally kidnapping a little girl with cancer as Jailbot drags him back to Superjail. The little girl is found by the other inmates, who mistake the bracelet giving her condition and date of death as her name (which they pronounce San-cer) and birthday. They decide to hold a party for her as a result. Meanwhile, the Warden is feeling the effects of aging, and seeing the little girl causes him to inexplicably birth a malevolent creature bent on her destruction.
8"Dream Machine"November 23 2008103
The Warden tries to stop a riot by monitoring the inmates' dreams.
9"Time-Police 1"November 30 2008108
The Warden is put on trial for his future crimes.
10"Time-Police 2"December 7 2008109
With the Warden missing, the Superjail staff tries to make it in the real world.
