• Big 5 sporting goods, a publicly traded (NASDAQ) sporting goods company
• Big Five (Hawaii), an oligarchy of five corporations that ruled over Hawaii
• Big Five (banks), in Canada
• Big Five (California), an informal institution of California's government
• Five Families of Cosa Nostra in New York: Gambino, Genovese, Bonanno, Colombo and Luchese.
• Politburo Standing Committee of the Communist Party of China, pre-1956
• UN Security Council permanent members: the People's Republic of China, France, Russia, the United Kingdom, and the United States.

In sports and entertainment

• Big Five 1980's European golfers. The five European Major tournament winners between 1979 and 1991. These were Seve Ballesteros, Bernhard Langer, Ian Woosnam, Nick Faldo, and Sandy Lyle. Coincidently, the five were born within 11 months of each other – 9th April 1957 (Seve Ballesteros), to 2nd March 1958 (Ian Woosnam).
• The Big Five Academy Awards, which are: Best Picture, Best Director, Best Actor, Best Actress, and Best Screenplay.
• Philadelphia Big 5, an association of college athletic programs in Philadelphia
• Big Five Game, a term coined by the hunting fraternity in Africa to refer to the five animals said to be most difficult to hunt: Rhinoceros, Leopard, Cape Buffalo, Elephant and Lion

• The Big Five (band) were a new wave Reggae/Funk band from Sydney formed in 1982. The name is derived from a track on the album of the same name by Prince Buster released in 1972.
