The Copa Colombia is a soccer competition among the club members of the DIMAYOR.
Copa Colombia has only been played seven times since its first edition in 1950-51 until its last time in 2008.
The biggest champions of the tournament are Millonarios, and the defunct team Boca Juniors de Cali, both with two championships and one runner-up.
History
The Copa Colombia was played in Colombia in six occasions, four of them between 1950-51, 1951-52, 1952-53, and 1962-63 (the first three were in the El Dorado of Colombian football) as an elimination tournament similar to the Copa del Rey in Spain, with home and away games. Due to the economic status of the teams and the Colombian League back then, the teams could afford large rosters for both tournaments and international games.
It is to be noted that after the 1962-63 edition, the Copa Colombia trophy was given definitively to Millonarios for winning consecutive times the editions of Fútbol Profesional Colombiano of 1951, 1952, and 1953 and the Copa Colombia of 1952-52 and then other editions of Fútbol Profesional Colombiano of 1961, 1962, and 1963 and again the Copa Colombia of 1962-63.
After 18 years, in 1981 there was a new edition for Copa Colombia, as part of the Fútbol Profesional Colombiano. This Cup was won by Independiente Medellin over Deportivo Cali. Eight years later, in 1989, Santa Fe won the competition.
New beginning
In February 14 2008, the 36 members of the DIMAYOR approved a re-start for the Copa Colombia. It will be contested by all teams from the First and Second Division of Futbol Colombiano. It will schedule a yearlong fixture 2008 and the champion will get a berth for the Copa Sudamericana. The tournament will start in March and is to get done in November.
The official sponsor of the tournament for the next five years will be the Postobon company, which is also part owner of one of the competing teams, Atletico Nacional.
