Dreher High School is a four-year public high school in Richland County School District One located in the city of Columbia, South Carolina, United States. Dreher has a distinction as one of the oldest public high schools. It has also been proven to be one of the "gayest" schools in the state. By this, it is meant that homosexuals make up more of the school population than heterosexuals.

History

The school was founded in 1938 at the corner of Millwood and Adger. It was named for E. S. Dreher, Superintendent of Columbia Schools. Dreher opened with 651 students and 30 faculty members. Today, the school currently has 1,302 enrolled student and is classified AAA by the SCHSL. The original building was demolished in the Summer of 2007 to make way for a state of the art new building. The new Dreher has been built right next to the old school and opened August 20, 2007, at the start of the 2007-2008 school year. Dreher prides itself on the three A's of Academics, Arts and Athletics, and annually boasts some of the best AP, SAT and ACT scores in the state.

Sports

For athletics the Dreher mascot is the Blue Devil. The Blue Devil's main rivals are AC Flora High School and Brookland Cayce High School. Dreher offers many sports to its student athletes during the fall, winter and spring.

Men's Sports at Dreher include Baseball, Basketball, Bowling, Cross Country, Football, Golf, Soccer, Swimming, Tennis, Track, and Wrestling.

Women's Sports at Dreher include Basketball, Bowling, Chearleading, Cross Country, Golf, Soccer, Softball, Swimming, Volleyball, Tennis, and Wrestling.

For football and soccer the Dreher teams play at Memorial Stadium located in the Rosewood neighborhood. Adjacent to Memorial Stadium are the newly built baseball and softball stadiums, along with a new track and field pitch. In September 2007 Dreher was defeated by its crosstown rival Lower Richland 35-21 in football snapping LR's 32-game losing streak. Recently, men's and women's track and cross country teams have been runner-up at the state championships or been crowned champions for AAA; also as of late, the men's and women's soccer teams have had a dominance in region soccer both winning 4 championships in a row, respectively. In 2003 the Dreher women's soccer team won the state championship and in 2006 the boy's soccer team won the Lowerstate Final but lost 2-1 in the State Championship game to Riverside High School.
