Trying to edit page?

Why would you protect a page that is a current event? I am watching ESPN News as we speak and hearing new updates on this guy and I cannot edit the page! Coo coo! —Preceding unsigned comment added by 72.68.50.194 (talk) 23:05, 2 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]

The page was protected due to excessive violations of our policies concerning unsourced information. It is only semi protected so established editors can add new information as it is reliably confirmed. Mfield (talk) 23:09, 2 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Marquis Cooper's death

Should we list Marquis Cooper as deceased? I saw on Yahoo! news that the search for him and Corey Smith was called off today, as they would've found survivors by now. I just wanted to run this by someone to see if we should list today as his date of death or not. Justin (talk) 17:03, 3 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]

He's still not legally dead.►Chris NelsonHolla! 23:04, 3 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Absolutely not. Until a reliable source confirms death - i.e. they find a body he is legally missing presumed dead. Presumptions about the odds maybe enough reason for the coastguard to call of a search and save their budget but they are not a reason for us to publish incorrect facts. Until that changes this must remain a BLP article. Mfield (talk) 23:15, 3 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]
He may very well not be alive anymore, but until there is a reliable source saying he has died, we leave it alone.--Jojhutton (talk) 00:17, 4 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]
NO. Please please respect him and his family by NOT being so insensitive as to list him as deceased. Just imagine if his family members see that. Be sensitive people. Thanks. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Eartzi (talkcontribs) 01:06, 4 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Is he now legally dead? --65.27.110.226 (talk) 01:20, 4 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]
I don't think so, but if he is, a citation may help.--Jojhutton (talk) 01:21, 4 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]
I think he is presumed dead. Is that a notable thing to be on the headline by his name, city, etc? Overlordneo (talk) 01:53, 4 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]
We need a citation. We just can't guess. This is stil a WP:BLP, until further notice.--Jojhutton (talk) 01:56, 4 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]
He's "presumed dead". That's a ruling by search-and-rescue personnel. That's not the same as being declared legally dead. The legal declaration may come in several months, after family members petition a court, and only has the purpose of disposing of a missing person's estate. See Steve Fossett, who went missing with his airplane in September 2007, but the first evidence of remains didn't show up until a year later. However, his widow petitioned the court and had him declared legally dead within six months of his disappearance. Since Cooper, Smith and Bleakley evidently removed their life jackets, unless someone were to find the bodies floating within a week or so, it is likely that no remains will ever be found. Sorry if that sounds blunt, but that's the way it goes in the sea. —QuicksilverT @ 00:56, 6 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Devastating news in the search for Marquis Cooper, Corey Smith and Will Bleakley. FANHOUSE released an article about 2 hours ago, in the article Schuyler (the man found clinging to the boat Monday afternoon) according to him, Cooper and Smith both gave up hope. "We were told that Nick said the two NFL players took their life jackets off and drifted out to sea," said Bob Bleakey, whose Son Will, 25, is also still missing. Nick said that two to four hours after the boat tipped over in rough waters, one of the two NFL players decided he'd had enough. A few hours later, the second one did the same thing. If that isn't enough, Schuyler said that Will Bleakley who stayed hanging on the capsized boat with Nick, told him he saw a light in the distance and decided to try and swim for it.

This is very very sad news if it is true. Lets hope not.

By the way, I would've posted this to both Marquis Cooper and Corey Smith's wikipedia pages but they're "locked". — Preceding unsigned comment added by Beautifullxxo (talkcontribs)

Thanks for the information. If true, it might need to be added. The reason that the article is locked is to ensure that uncited and potentially damaging information is not added to a Biography. This sometimes happens with editors who may be a bit unsure of how wikipedia works. In time we all get the hang of it.--Jojhutton (talk) 01:19, 4 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]

OH MAN, how sad. It's like the movies Open Water and Open Water 2 coming to life. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Eartzi (talkcontribs) 01:25, 4 March 2009 (UTC) His wife just filed for a death certificite so shouldent we list him as dead. it was on fox news here is the link http://www.foxnews.com/story/0,2933,508999,00.html —Preceding unsigned comment added by 70.176.63.140 (talk) 17:24, 12 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]

As long as you have a citation from a reliable source. Mfield (talk) 17:30, 12 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]

currentteam error

It says: [[{{{currentteam}}}|{{{currentteam}}}]] — No. N/A

on the right hand side. I'm not familiar with those tags. Must be fixed though.Indianparttime2 (talk) 22:09, 8 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Alex2399 messed up the template when he removed the currentteam and currentnumber from it. i'd fix it, but i can't edit it. Ringerfan23 (talk) 23:31, 8 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Good, it's fixed now. Indianparttime2 (talk) 20:16, 10 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Images

I think we need at least one image of Marquis Cooper.. him being someone who is lost.

Here's one:http://seattlepi.nwsource.com/dayart/20090302/200cooper.jpg

I don't think you can use fair use pictures for people until they are legally declared dead. Ringerfan23 (talk) 21:37, 27 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Is he not though? The death certificate was applied for a few weeks back.►Chris NelsonHolla! 22:30, 27 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]
If he's legally dead, then the infobox should be changed, a picture added and he should be removed from the roster template. I'll go check it out.--Giants27 T/C 22:44, 27 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]
He's still in the NFLPA though, and I'd imagine once he's declared dead he'll be removed from there.►Chris NelsonHolla! 22:53, 27 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Probably.--Giants27 T/C 23:10, 27 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Applying for a death certificate and getting one are two different things. He's not legally dead and therefore the infobox needs to remain as is. Jauerbackdude?/dude. 00:43, 28 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]

State gov't photos and report about boating accident

Editors can go here:

http://www.myfwc.com/NEWSROOM/Resources/News_Resources_BoatAccident.htm

for reports (PDF format) and photos about the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission's investigation into the accident, including interviews with the survivor that includes relevant details that suggest the victims spent hours on top of the capsized boat in chest-deep water which was at a temperature that meant they were likely to die within 19 hours. The report notes they had three wearable flotation devices, one throwable flotation device, and a large cooler they also used for flotation. All three apparently died of hypothermia rather than drowing; according to the interview, Cooper died first (March 1), and that after his death, one of the other victims removed the flotation device Cooper wore, and that his body was allowed to "become separated" from the capsized boat. Smith died within an hour of Cooper, but not before removing his own flotation device; Bleakley died on March 2, and like Smith, removed his flotation device before doing so.

It's not clear from the state's report why both Smith and Bleakley chose to remove their flotation devices before becoming separated from the boat since by then the survivor had several flotation aids in his possession.

One of the photos:

http://www.myfwc.com/images/Newsroom/V1_RecoveryFromGulfCapsized.JPG

is of the capsized boat as the rescuers first found it, and if as a work of a state gov't official it's in the public domain, it might be worth adding to the article.. 68.167.191.109 (talk) 23:33, 27 March 2009 (UTC).[reply]

Man, reading that stuff is chilling.►Chris NelsonHolla! 23:48, 27 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]
It seems that Paradoxical undressing occurs when a person suffers from severe hypothermia. This could possibly explain why the three men removed their life jackets. But, I don't know for sure. Thanks. (Joseph A. Spadaro (talk) 22:13, 28 March 2009 (UTC))[reply]
I just added details from the report to the article. 72.244.200.66 (talk) 07:26, 30 March 2009 (UTC).[reply]
