Half Brother

I'm surprised there is no mention of her half brother, Nikos; they both share the same father, but have different mothers. According to Jewel's account in the song, the reason her father was excommunicated from the church was because of his relationship with Nikos' mother, Linda. You can view the song here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zvQtB-3KbN0 Uhhuhhim (talk) 01:06, 8 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Late Career

lol what, from the age 29 till whenever she puts out her last album and stops touring will be considered her late career?? I am fairly confident that when she will be 60 (30 years from now....) that what she will be doing now will be considered her late career

I think that late career should be replaced with current/recent

Trans-Siberian Orchestra

It is not metion that she appears in the DVD the Gosht of Christmas Eve from the Trans-Siberian Orchestra, part of the box set the Christmas Trilogy. She sings the song Hark! The Herald Angels Sing.

Jason Mraz

I removed the mention of Jason Mraz because it seems superfluous in an article about Jewel. I quote it here for convenience:

...the same establishment that famous pop singer Jason Mraz would frequently play at a few years down the road.

I'm sure a lot of people have played at Java Joe's but I don't think it is appropriate to list them here. Furthermore, calling someone famous is generally not very encylopedial, and how frequently is 'frequently'?Mumby 23:06, 17 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Her Grandfather

There was a TV show called Pop-up video that would show music videos accompanied by facts about the artist. During an episode in which they were showing the video for "Who Will Save Your Soul," a blurb explained that Jewel was from Alaska and her grandfather helped draft portions of its constitution. Is there any truth to this, especially since it says here that her parents were Swiss-born?

Reply: Jewel's Grandfather Yule Kilcher is probably deserving of his own Wikipedia entry if anyone cares to draft one. It was he that was born in Switzerland and emigrated to Alaska as a homesteader.

"Kilcher was among the delegates to Alaska's pre-statehood constitutional convention in 1955-56, and he served in the state Senate from 1963-67 before returning to Homer."

Source: http://www.alaska.edu/creatingalaska/convention/delegates/kilcher.xml

Jewel is not LDS

Jewel mentioned that she and her father used to attend an LDS church, but stopped attending just before she turned 8 (when her father was excommunicated). Since they stopped attending before she turned 8, it's unlikely that she was even baptized, which gives one official membership in the church. Since she (probably) wasn't baptized, she isn't an official member of the church and I don't think she'd characterize herself as "Mormon."

As much as I'd love it if she were LDS, I don't think we can call her one just because she used to attend an LDS church as a child, for a while. Currently, she doesn't even act very LDS. Unless we have some verifiable proof that she is LDS, we should remove her from the Notable Latter Day Saints category. Frecklefoot | Talk 15:23, Sep 21, 2004 (UTC)

Well, if that's the case then by all means do so. I was obviously in error. - Gilgamesh 19:20, 21 Sep 2004 (UTC)

I will agree with the above comments. However, I have read Jewels memoir ("Chasing Down The Dawn") and she does refer to her family as "Mormons". I will cite a reference here shortly.

Move to Jewel Kilcher?

A numbber of articles about singers who go by their first names have been disambiguated by adding their last name, such as Dido Armstrong and Sade Adu. Should this article be moved to simply Jewel Kilcher and the links and disambiguation page updated, and this page made a redirect? Derrick Coetzee 00:03, 30 Oct 2004 (UTC)

I don't know of any specific policy for this, but I vote to keep it as is. Most people don't even know her last name and will link to [[Jewel]] and [[Jewel (singer)]] will be easier for them to disam than Jewel Kilcher. I don't think she's ever gone by that professionally even though that may be her full legal name. Just my $.02... Frecklefoot | Talk 05:22, Oct 30, 2004 (UTC)

KelisFan2K5 moved this page to Jewel Kilcher, but I don't think he/she read this discussion. I moved it back to [[Jewel (singer)]]. Please, if you want to move this page, discuss it here first. Frecklefoot | Talk 18:47, Jan 25, 2005 (UTC)

I think that this page should be moved to Jewel Kilcher. After all, nobody calls her Jewel (singer) and Jewel is just short for Jewel Kilcher, rather than being a pseudonym. It would be a nicer sort of disambiguation. There is a singer called Jewell credited on 1992 gangsta rap album The Chronic. There would be less confusion between Jewell and Jewel Kilcher. Tim Ivorson 08:46, 20 Apr 2005 (UTC)

I respectfully disagree. Jewel links to the disambiguation page. There, whoever is looking for Jewel the singer will immediately see Jewel (singer) and know that is the link they want. If we put in Jewel Kilcher, it isn't immediately obvious that she is the singer that they are looking for.
No, no one claims that people call her "Jewel (singer)", but no one calls her "Jewel Kilcher" either. Appending a person's reason for noteriety is the normal way we disambiguate articles with similar names. Besides, Jewel Kilcher redirects to this article if someone decides to use that name in an article. Frecklefoot | Talk 17:28, Apr 20, 2005 (UTC)
The text of the disambiguation page needn't change, if that wouldn't improve it.
I didn't mean to say that somebody claims that somebody calls her Jewel (singer). I meant that somebody calls her Jewel Kilcher. If that's not the case, then I withdraw my objection. When I made my comment, I thought of the suggestion only to disambiguate where really necessary (Wikipedia:WikiProject Music#Albums, bands, and songs). I thought that moving the page to Jewel Kilcher would make disambiguation unnecessary now and if there are ever other articles about singers called Jewel. Tim Ivorson 09:01, 22 Apr 2005 (UTC)
If another singer ever comes along called "Jewel," we can deal with it then. For now, I think the name of the article should stand as is. If course this is just MHO. Frecklefoot | Talk 16:09, Apr 22, 2005 (UTC)
OK. Tim Ivorson 08:28, 23 Apr 2005 (UTC)

From Utah?

Should Jewel really be in the Category:People from Utah? She was born there, but the article states she spent most of her life in Alaska. Shouldn't she be listed in Category:People from Alaska instead? Frecklefoot | Talk 14:40, Apr 7, 2005 (UTC)

I changed her cat to Alaska. Frecklefoot | Talk 16:12, Apr 22, 2005 (UTC)
Can you change it back? We don't really want her and it's not very true; she wasn't born here and she went to high school in Michigan. She's as much Alaskan as she is a Michigander (or a Mormon, for that matter). 209.193.57.21 07:30, 14 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]
I wouldn't expect a response to a comment that's 13 months old. Deco 07:57, 14 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

"We don't really want her", he says. LOL. Because all the Alaskans voted and asked him to let Wikipedia know....216.114.203.113 05:58, 15 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Wouldn't she fit into Alaska, Michigan, and Utah categories then?-24.92.43.153 03:35, 1 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Having read Jewels books, she does refer to her family as mormon, but never mentions having spent much time in Utah. v She talks much more about living in MI, CA, TX, AK, but never Utah.Tallrichard2 19:56, 31 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]

This is a case where the subject of this Article could be in two Categories by City or Town: People from Payson, Utah (place of birth) and People from Homer, Alaska (primary residence), as well as two Categories by State: People from Utah and People from Alaska (same respective reasons). If memory serves me correctly, the body of Wikipedians is still out as to whether Kilcher should be in the People from California category (after all, Atlantic originally signed her in the San Diego area). Incidentally, Atlantic dropping Kilcher recently is a duplicate situation to what Deborah Gibson faced when Body Mind Soul failed to sell back in 1994. - B.C.Schmerker 16:19, 27 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

NPOV/sources

A lot of this is a bit opinionated, for instance "It's an innovative album that is smart, fun, and sexy. It also contains heartfelt lyrics about love..."

Also, there's not a single reference for any of the stuff written here. --Foofy 19:26, 10 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]

so how does everyone like the new single "again and again"

i personally think she getting back to peices of you and im so happy, i love the new material and i hope everyone else does too!

I think this album is really goning to sell because shes turned to her true spirit again.

Personal Life?

a section on her personal life is noticeably absent. Streamless 14:21, 16 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Which aspects in particular?

From sources I've seen, there is little verifiable infdo on her day to day life. She is married to Ty Murray, Lives in Stephenville, TX, and was on Nashville Star. anything beyond that is likely rumour or tabloid, unless you have facts and sourcesTallrichard2 19:59, 31 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]

ummm.....Jewel is not married. She has been with her boyfriend, Ty Murray, for 10 years, but I know for a fact they're not married. Just thought I should let you know!

The move again

In retrospect, the move to Jewel Kilcher seems like a pretty terrible idea. When you say Jewel (singer), I know exactly who you mean. When you say Jewel Kilcher, I (and anyone else who isn't a diehard fan) thinks, "who's that?" Isn't that a good enough reason to move it back to the original title? We might as well have Madonna at Madonna Ciccone. Deco 19:24, 29 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I agree. Probably about 99.9% of her fans have no idea what her last name is. Since she is most widely known simply as "Jewel" and is a singer, it should be moved back to its original location. — Frecklefoot | Talk 20:38, 29 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]
I decided to be bold and do it. It appears that whoever did the last move didn't fix redirects, so the effort was minimal. Deco 02:37, 30 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Country music?

I haven't been able to find out, is Jewel country now? Her video is at CMT.com and playing on the channel but I haven't heard her song on country radio. If she is, we should add country to her list of genres at the top of the page. --Chuckos 16:41, 25 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Hard to say. Some of her songs were in a sort of country style, like "Love Me But Leave Me Alone", but I'd be hard pressed to label her a country artist unless she's done tracks I don't know about. Deco 20:03, 25 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

She has a range of musical genres, from country, to dance, pop, rock, and possibly a few others. to put her into any one category, other than just a very broad pop-music category would be somewhat innaccurate

Music

Under the music portion, it says she cut her first album in 1995 at nineteen, yet it's only 2006 now and her age is 32. Did someone forget to do the math?

Reply to unsigned comment by Mumby:
Read it again. It says

She cut her debut album, Pieces of You, when she was nineteen and it was released in 1995.

It says it was released in 1995, not that she cut it in 1995.Mumby 09:08, 15 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]
It's still bad writing. Don't mix the age and date like that. Say, she cut the album in 1993 and released it in 1995. Or whatever...

Acclaim for 'This Way'

Is 'This Way' really

...her most critically acclaimed album to date...

Can anybody give references for this, I can't remember any critics putting 'This Way' above 'Pieces of you' or 'Spirit'.Mumby 10:36, 30 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Yeah, It was. After the meda blitz for Pieces of You & Spirit died down, she took a 2 year break, and everyone was anticipating her 3rd album. Thus, when it was released, it recieved alot of attention and is known as "her most critically acclaimed album to date". —The preceding unsigned comment was added by 64.12.116.10 (talkcontribs) 13:44, 28 October 2006.
Highly anticipated and critically acclaimed are not the same thing though. I would be happy to agree with you if you can provide references. Oh, and please read this Wikipedia:Sign your posts on talk pages, it will help us figure out who is who on these talk pages.Mumby 18:31, 28 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I know. But what i'm saying is the anticipation led to being critically acclaimed. I've seen it on a couple of sites and interviews dealing with Jewel. When I come across some refrences, Ill post them here.

& I have no idea how to "sign" this.

Ok thanks for that. You can sign your post with 4 tildas like this ~~~~. Regards, Mumby 08:50, 3 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Some much needed clean up

This article is getting a bit messy in my humble opinion. The most obvious problem is that we have a list and description of all the singles, then under that we have a table of all the singles, under that we have a list of all the singles with their billboard chart position, and under that we have a list of singles with their dance chart position. To make it worse, many of these singles have their own wikipedia page anyway! I suggest we remove the subsection Career->Singles since all the information in that could be put into the singles own wikipedia pages. Also, the sections ==Top 40 Radio== and ==Dance/Electronic Top 40== should be removed and the information put into the table called singles under ==discography==. I don't mind doing this, but I wanted to discuss it here first, any thoughts? Mumby 11:13, 30 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I think the page looks alot cleaner, could still use some more cleaning, but a vast improvement 207.200.122.8 00:13, 13 December 2006 (UTC)jewelfan[reply]

I agree. Any specific ideas? It would be great to be able to get rid of the clean-up tag, some decent references would be good too. I'll see what I can do. Anybody got any more ideas?Mumby 07:58, 13 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Can we get a better looking picture of Jewel?

As you can see the external links have been cleaned up recently in order to meet the guidlines at wikipedia: external links. The problematic one has been the fansite forum, I don't think it belongs in the article because some parts of it can only be accessed by registered members; a quick glance through will show that people upload things to it that may breach copyright; and finally it brings absolutely nothing useful to this wikipedia page. Under 'links to be avoided' the Manual of Style says:

Links to sites that require payment or registration to view the relevant content.

and

Links to social networking sites (such as MySpace), discussion forums or USENET.

So that is why I don't think it should be on the list.Mumby 08:56, 16 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I agree. Also, it's not NPOV, and if we include one such link, why shouldn't we include all the other Jewel forums or fansites? Belovedfreak 17:06, 16 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Complete mess

This an entire article is an absolute disaster. I recommend it be completely re-written as it has numerous run-on sentences, little to no information on her personal life, her career section is completely wrote out like a book, very encyclopedic. Also her singles & CDs and their charts are devouring the majority of the page content. I also suggest that that the section about the charts be merged to the appropriate articles (or to her discography page) and that some things such as Film and Theater be moved to a single section. It is no secret that the Television section is way too lengthy and needs to be more organized into probably a paragraph or even a table, rather than just bullets. The writing section contains no sources to even prove that she has written those books. And the book section also probably needs a picture of at least one of her books and a little more information about her books, and the red-links removed. (I'm sure the books aren't worth their own separate articles, so at least make the section more fitting) The Philanthropy sections has too many red-links as well. Plus if her tours were actually "Major tours" why aren't there articles about them? Or if the tours were not that major enough to deserve their own articles, you could at least write a few sentences in the section (ie: start date/end date, number of legs, openers, ect). Plus her "Awards and nominations" section is barely organized and could probably use a color-code (red/green) table. I hope someone will look into this and really understand how much this article needs to be fixed. Thanks -24.92.43.153 00:14, 1 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I agree that the article really does need some clean up, but why don't you do it? That's the point of wikipedia right? I guess your answer would probably be "I don't have the time", that is probably the reason nobody else has done it yet! So long as well do a bit now and again it should soon be a much better article. Mumby 08:42, 1 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]
I found some thirty-something sources, cut out stuff mentioned in other articles already linked to, and organized the tv-work section, as well as mering the already small theater and film together. All that's left is the tour and awards sections. -24.92.43.153 10:39, 2 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Wow! That is some outstanding work, thanks for taking the time.Mumby 12:53, 2 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Fine Article

This is a fine article: applause! You critics are too harsh. One point. The main article states that: "She started writing songs at the age of seventeen.[11]" But the singer states in "Jewel from the Realto Square Theatre Part 1 (#1404)" a live performance, that she started writing songs at the age of sixteen. http://www.mpt.org/schedule/series.cfm?series_id=12378#168374 rumjal 20:55, 6 April 2008 (UTC)

Everyday Angels (EDAs)

At least ten years ago, there was a group of her fans who called ourselves the EDAs, often referenced in articles then, using a mailing list at smoe.org. It's all still archived. Is this something that deserves mention here, as Lenadra was fairly involved in keeping in touch with the group on a regular basis, and the group was significantly responsible for her Living Room Tours. We even had t-shirts made up! Westleyd 06:22, 16 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Definitely... Also, there is an organization called the Everyday Angels Foundation which promotes volunteerism. I don't know if it's still active - it appears from the web site perhaps to be somewhat dormant. Jewel gave permission to use the name and it supports the spirit of her ideals.

MTV incident

(Spam link removed)

During a taping of MTV's "Total Request Live" one day, Jewel and her boyfriend (rodeo champion Ty Murray) ventured into a photo booth on the set. Jewel lifted her shirt and bra, and Murray nuzzled on one of her breasts. longest chart run

Folks I'm no expet on Wikipedia but I read an article in November which I want to share with you because some of you will know how to make the corrections and I won't mess anything up.

The article is from http://www.billboard.com/bbcom/search/google/article_display.jsp?vnu_content_id=1003676768

November 23, 2007, by Fred Bronson, which states that LeAnn Rimes has the record for longest chart run on the hot 100 at 69 weeks on the charts.

It's possible that Jewel no longer holds 2nd place.

As the title says, who discovered her, according to the article it was flea and then there was there the other one. --MoRsE (talk) 16:28, 13 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Move

Why was this moved to Jewel Kilcher? She's known professionally as Jewel, and per WP:NC, pages should match the most common name. She's credited as just Jewel in sources and on albums; therefore, her most commonly recognized name is Jewel. Birth/"Origin"/Nationality

Please, in keeping with standards, this person is an American. Until we begin referring to Kurt Cobain as a "Washington musician" or Kurt Weill as a "Saxony-Anhalt composer," we should introduce Jewel as American. After the introduction, it would then be appropriate to mention her upbringing and notable Alaskan achievements.
