Early Life??

I don't think her "Early Life" section should include the fact that she met Selena's family.

--Melazeee (talk) 21:15, 25 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Why not ? It's important to mention that she met the family of the person she was named after. Of course, it would have been more notable if she had met Selena herself, but still how many people have met Selena's family ? —Preceding unsigned comment added by 201.74.105.81 (talk) 03:07, 5 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Its not that important, but if it should be mentioned then it shouldn't be in the "Early Life" section, which is what I was pointing out. --melaneeeee; (talk) 22:57, 22 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Their is a few facts that are incorrect she was born in Tarrant County Texas not New York City also her fathers name is Ricardo Joel Gomez and her mothers name is Mandy Dawn Cornett this information comes from the Texas Birth index 1903-1997 on www.ancestry.com. ---{User:Amynoah2000} — Preceding unsigned comment added by Amynoah2000 (talkcontribs) 02:56, 30 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]

None of the birth info was sourced, so I removed it. Texas Birth Index would show us that someone named "Selena Gomez" was born on whatever date, wherever. We need a reliable source that says where and when this Selena Gomez was born. Ancestry.com is not a reliable source. - SummerPhD (talk) 13:57, 30 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Birthplace

Best info I have seen is born in New York, raised in Dallas. Only reference I have seen is from a Sep 10, 2007 article in the Fort Worth Star Telegram with a google summary of "7 pm Sunday, National Geographic Channel Wizards of Waverly Place Born in New York City but raised in Dallas, former Barney & Friends co-star Selena Gomez ..." and a url of http://www.star-telegram.com/television/story/228147.html Unfortunately that url seems to lead to an archived story so we can't use it as a reference. --NrDg 22:21, 9 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]

A San Antonio Express News article refers to her as "Texas-born". - TexasAndroid 18:16, 11 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Born in New York??? Selena is my friend from Grand Prairie. We grew up together and my family is close with her family and I know for a fact that she was born in Texas. When I saw this article I called her and she said that Disney thought it would be good to say that she was born in New York to add more elegance. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 129.118.121.169 (talk) 13:18, 5 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Selena was born in dallas, Texas. She was born in 22 july, 1992. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Luvnickj (talkcontribs) 20:57, 11 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Selena was born in Texas, not New York City. Link: http://www.familytreelegends.com/records/20902?c=search&first=selena&last=gomez ~~ —Preceding unsigned comment added by 66.19.17.38 (talk) 00:55, 6 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Although familytreelegends shows someone with the same name and commonly-accepted birthdate, it's not definitive proof it's her. Most reputable sources say she's a "Texas native", but I couldn't find one which directly said she was born in Texas. On the other hand I couldn't find a source that said she was born in New York that didn't look like a Wiki derivative. Gimmetrow 01:50, 7 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]
FamilyTreeLegends is sourced from official birth and genealogy records, and every date and name on the site is correct. It is an official site. Look up anyone you wish who was born in California or Texas (The site covers some 10 states so far) and the names and birth dates will correspond. Jennifer Aniston is listed, Colbie Caillat is listed, among many, many others. The site is used to source many birth dates on Wikipedia, including Sara Bareilles, among others. There is only one Selena Marie Gomez born July 22, 1992 in Dallas, Texas, one is not listed as a California birth for that date, so the San Diego comment below is ludicrous. I'm not understanding why the site's authenticity as a source is being disputed. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 66.19.17.65 (talk) 23:15, 27 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I think it's clear by now, that she was born in the Dallas - Fort Worth Metroplex and not in New York. I understand that was a publicity rumor - connected with Wizards of Waverly Place. However there is a question of how muc accurency we are going for. I highly doubt that she was born in Grand Prairie, she probably was born in Dallas and raised in Grand Prairie, as most babies from Grand Prairie are born in Dallas hospitals. But as the Metroplex is really like one big city, I think this may not matter? —Preceding unsigned comment added by 87.205.148.75 (talk) 16:55, 28 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Named for Selena

The Express News article I linked in the previous section also mentions that she is named for the Tejano singer Selena, with Gomez's dad being a big Selena fan. I would think that would be an interesting addition, but am not really sure where it would fit in. - TexasAndroid 18:20, 11 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]

When was she born? Because it says she was born on 1992 meaning she has to be fifteen but her birthday is July 22 that would mean she is 15 going on to 16 which that would mean she can't be 16 but all the sites say the same information what's true. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 24.163.35.54 (talk) 01:30, 28 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Some people are mistaken that Selena's middle name is Kaleigh but, her middle name is actually Marie, like it says there. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Hollistergirl89 (talkcontribs) 23:00, 5 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Selena was bprn in San Diego, California and her best friend as a child was Dana Lamb. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 121.215.63.225 (talk) 09:14, 27 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Music

I noticed the article lists her genres as Pop, Rock, and R&B, but I did not know she had recorded anything other than the Wizards of Waverly Place theme song and part of a song for her part as McKayla on Hannah Monatan. Does anyone have any information on this? Sundancin (talk) 00:57, 3 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

She recorded a version of 'Cruella De Vil' for the Platinum Edition of 101 Dalmatians.

On Hannah Montana Selena did not sing the song, she was lipsynching a song by Julie Griffin. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 76.105.189.97 (talk) 02:36, 22 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]

She has recorded "Everything is not what it seems" as theme song in Wizards of Waverly Place, "If cupid had a heart for Hannah Montana, and "Tell me something I don't know" and "Bang a drum" with Drew Seeley, and " New Classic" for the upcoming film " Another Cinderella Story.— Preceding unsigned comment added by Luvnickj (talkcontribs) 21:04, 11 August 2008

Most people have already added Selena's image to this page, but they appeared to be fair use images. You must place free use images to biography articles, never fair use (copyrighted) images. --staka (TC) 20:12, 10 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]
What we need is a picture someone took and released for free use under an appropriate free-use license. See WP:IUP image use policy for lots of details. Most pictures easily available are pro photoshoot pictures and cannot be used as the copyright is held by the photographer and/or agency and they want money from the pictures so won't give them away like Wiki needs them to do for us to use them. This is a real problem for all bio articles - free use pictures are like gold if you can find one. --NrDg 00:19, 11 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I happen to have an image of Selena right now, but I don't know if it is a free photo or not. I also don't know how to add it to the article. I'm new to Wikipedia, so I need a little help. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Soccer5525 (talkcontribs) 23:16, 11 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]

If you yourself didn't take the picture with your own camera we probably can't use it. If you just found it somewhere on the net you will need to link to where you found it and prove the the photographer released it for free use. If the picture was taken by a pro it will not be free use as we require as pros don't do that. Suggest you read WP:IUP before even thinking about uploading a photo for a bio article. --NrDg 23:56, 11 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]
So that means we cant use any off of the IMDB (not sure if they are fair use, free use,...)? Why cant they be fair use? That seems a bit ridiculous.Dvferret (talk) 22:52, 23 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]

why don't we try google? all of the pictures on the site have been released for free use —Preceding unsigned comment added by 67.171.70.92 (talk) 13:35, 26 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Not sure what you mean - images cached by google may be copyrighted and are not necessarily "free use" in Wikipedia terms. Gimmetrow 13:45, 26 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]

well they are cuz someone put thier pic on the internet, one of the biggest sights EVER knowing that anyone will be able to use them, isn't that free use???? —Preceding unsigned comment added by 67.171.70.92 (talk) 02:11, 30 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Images on the internet are not automatically free to use, especially by other websites, unless that freedom is clearly granted by the terms of the website. Gimmetrow 23:36, 30 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]

which is what is granted for google! free pictures, links and search engines. isn't that there motto??? —Preceding unsigned comment added by Mininoipod37 (talkcontribs) 14:32, 3 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Google doesn't own images on someone else's website - finding a copyrighted image through a google search doesn't make it non-copyrighted. Gimmetrow 14:45, 3 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]
I've found a free image, I'm now putting the image up. --Kanonkas :  Talk  07:30, 4 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Middle name

I think you should put her real middle name-Selena Marie Gomez — Preceding unsigned comment added by Longhairedcutie (talkcontribs) 21:46, 16 April 2008

Do you have any reliable sources giving that middle name? If there is any reasonable doubt, we shouldn't have it. Most fansites seem to list a different middle name than you suggested. Although fansites are not reliable, information which doesn't correspond needs to be sourced or it won't be stable. Gimmetrow 22:02, 16 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I got it from the magazine, Popstar!. It was a quick interview on a clipboard. You should look into it.

Placeholder

This article is receiving copyvio after copyvio. The placeholder seems to encourage that, and should be removed. Gimmetrow 22:03, 28 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I'm conflicted. From an assume good faith perspective the placeholder does advertise a need for an image and someone might have actually taken a picture with their own camera that we could use. Practically all it seems to be doing is encouraging people to look for pictures on the web and upload them ignoring the free-use requirement. User:David Gerard appears to be on a campaign to add the placeholders. I think we should keep them and just remove the bad images. Pragmatically, I investigate all the added images and a lot of time it leads to a trove of bad uploads by an editor. --NrDg 22:45, 28 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]

She's Mexican

I'm a 100 percent sure that she's of Mexican descent. And besides the largest Hispanic group in the United States are the Mexicans.

She was born in New York so just as much chance to be Puerto Rico, Cuban, Spanish or other central or South American descent. Also people in Texas are more likely to be Tejano, not Mexican. Find a reference that explicitly mentions descent. --NrDg 20:21, 24 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]
She is half mexican and half italian. Just like in her show.
Where is the proof she is half mexican half italian? that sounds stupid. If you can get proof and cite references the information will be put in the article. But i thought she was born in Texas.. either that, or she was raised there.--Tiah12345 (talk) 09:11, 17 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]

she is half mexican half italian in the show wizards of waverly place... probably not in real life. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 76.252.222.16 (talkcontribs) 04:36, 6 October 2008

Actual sources are mentioned in the article. Gimmetrow 04:42, 6 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Selena Gomez is an American (U.S. Citizen) and is neither Italian or Mexican by Nationality. In this interview (http://blogamole.mtvtr3s.com/2008/09/23/exclusive-entrevista-selena-gomez/) Selena Gomez herself states that her Mother and Father are of Mexican Heritage and how she feels proud of how young latinas are looking up to her. The whole "half-Italian" statement seems to show up inconsistently from various news articles, and maybe Selena's mother has Italian ancestry (by way of Mexico), or article writers are confusing her character's biography (Mexican/Italian) with her personal biography. I think in the end Selena is just as American as any other Disney/Hollywood Star and not either Mexican or Italian by Nationality. --71.189.225.207 (talk) 22:36, 18 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]
The reference http://www.fresnobee.com/262/v-textonly/story/754287.html states her father is from Mexico and her mother is half Italian "Because Gomez's father is from Mexico, she has been able to attend many family quinceñeras. But the actress, whose mother is half-Italian,...". The article also explicitly states she is an American actress. Ethnicity is different than nationality and ethnicity seems to be extremely important to Americans. Thus all the hyphenated-Americans that exist. This is confusing as that is also how dual nationals are described but in this case it just means ethnicity. I think the Italian ethnicity claim for Gomez is weak as it is no more than 1/4. Mexican ethnicity is pretty strong. --NrDg 22:55, 18 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Selena Gomez is Mexican and Italian. <http://www.saynow.com/playMsg.html?ak=WmFNUlJXU2I5U0pGN1I1UXFRUGNkQT09> —Preceding unsigned comment added by Xopamelaxonicole (talkcontribs) 00:46, 21 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Please read the rest of the discussion. Born in the US means she is American. Other references show ethnicity of parents and the ethnicity that Gomez identifies with. --NrDg 01:47, 21 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]

No we can't do that. If you just get an image from the internet and put it under here it has to be under fair use. Otherwise it's likely it's a copyright violation. Also note that on living bio's you shouldn't be putting up fair use images as it's very likely free images do exist. It did in this case exist a free image, as you can see on the article now. As far as I know, she does not make videos with Jennifer Stone. Come to think of it, who is Jennifer Stone anyway? Still, she recently started making videos with Demi Lovato. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 72.95.139.248 (talk) 14:49, 31 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Jennifer Stone is a costar of Selena Gomez's on the Disney Channel show, Wizard of Waverly Place. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Tiah12345 (talkcontribs) 09:07, 17 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]

On YouTube, there is a video of Selena and Jennifer Stone on lunch break. But, Selena DOES make vids with her off-the-wall BFF, Demi Lovato. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 173.49.94.247 (talk) 13:15, 28 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]

her middle name is marie (said in a magazine and she put it in the info for one of her youtube videos-selena marie gomez) rumored to be dating nick jonas she makes youtube videos with wizards costar david henrie as well Iloveroo (talk) 09:02, 17 August 2008 (UTC) Yes, she has made like 2 videos with costar David Henrie from the Wizards of Waverly Place. I guess this could be mentioned in personal life.[reply]

  • Do you have a link to the "article" where she states her middle name? If you give us a link we can add it to the article. Also, you stated that she is "rumored to be dating nick jonas", we can only add true facts to wikipedia articles so that can't be put in. Finally, the info about the YouTube videos is already in the article. Edgehead5150 (talk) 15:32, 22 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Youtube

Geez, is Wikipedia a trivia site now, there is a WHOLE section about her youtube videos. Are they notable enough. Next the article might as well say what she wore in the videos. This article needs serious clean up. Is it really important to note every single video she does in her free time what is this, just because this girl's article is short because she hasn't worked enough to have a large amount of text seriously she is way too overrated for some reason. Atleast Miley Cyrus and the Jonas clan worked hard for thier headlines all she's done is star in a wizards show, barney and a cinderella story with a horrible soundtrack. --Isisnaa 19:23, 26 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Did you read the section? It's about a specific event covered by FOX and MTV. Gimmetrow 21:54, 27 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]

The other half of Selena’s Mother’s Ethnicity

Hey, just wondering if anybody knew the other half of Selena’s mother’s ethnicity. Her mother is half Italian but what’s the other half of her ethnicity? Her mother is half Italian and half what? I think this knowledge would be good for the article. So if anyone knows please include this in the article. Thank You.Maldek2 (talk) 08:40, 3 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]

In this interview (http://blogamole.mtvtr3s.com/2008/09/23/exclusive-entrevista-selena-gomez/) Selena Gomez herself states that her Mother and Father are of Mexican Heritage and how she feels proud of how young latinas are looking up to her. The whole "half-Italian" statement seems to show up inconsistently from various news articles, and maybe Selena's mother has Italian ancestry (by way of Mexico) but I think in the end Selena is just as American as any other Disney/Hollywood Star and not either Mexican or Italian by Nationality. --71.189.225.207 (talk) 22:34, 18 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Shouldn't anyone mention that she has a huge crush on Shia LaBeouf? Just saying, she's been telling evrybody a million times so.. K-K (talk) 18:13, 7 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]

The fact that she has a huge crush on him isn't really relevant to the article. It's more a more trivial thing.Nikiangelz (talk) 18:21, 7 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Selena Gomez Years Active controveresey?

On this page it says that Selena Gomez has been active since 2001 but there is no source for this. It also contradicts the fact that her first role which is mentioned started in 2002. This is a contradiction. Also her role in Barney from 2002-2005 is not sourced. There are no sources for any of her filmography and I have found reliable sources that are included in the article that state that she was only on Barney for two years. If there are no reliable sources for any of this, than are people making up this information? Also if as the article mentions her first role was on Barney in 2002 then how could she be active in 2001? Thank You for your cooperation.Maldek2 (talk) 22:53, 9 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Singer-Songwriter

Do you think Selena should be under the category, American singer-songwriters? I think it's now apparent that she writes her own songs. Geekboy6 (talk)

Until we have a reliable source showing that she writes her songs i think the category should be left out. Edgehead5150 04:51, 29 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]
So magazine and web articles don't count as a reliable source? She even mentioned that she and David Henrie wrote a song for Wizards of Waverly Place on one of her YouTube videos. David mentioned that in a different video. --Geekboy6 (talk) 07:01, 29 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Magazine articles aren't reliable because they can be fake, web articles from reliable websites can be used. Also YouTube videos shouldn't be used as sources. Edgehead5150 08:06, 29 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]
She can have a hobby of writing songs, and she can even think of herself as a songwriter, but that does not make her a songwriter until she gets official songwriting credit on something published. If the song she supposedly wrote for her show got her songwriter credit in the show end credits, then we can classify her as a songwriter, using the episode end credits as a verifiable reliable source. --NrDg 15:18, 29 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]
So I guess we're going to have to wait until the Wizards of Waverly Place episode Plan B airs or until her debut album comes out before she can be known as a singer-songwriter, right? --Geekboy6 (talk) 17:51, 29 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Pretty much. The infobox lists occupations. We don't usually list hobby-like activities under occupations. If you have a reference that says she likes to write songs that would be treated like any other thing she does that might be notable but it is not an occupation until she basically gets (provably) paid for it. If she gets songwriter credit on her album or credit on the show that means she is being paid for her efforts and then we could justify calling her a singer-songwriter (assuming she sings her own songs). --NrDg 18:19, 29 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]
I just saw a video from [3] of Selena getting interviewed. She clearly said in there that she's in the recording studio writing songs for kids and parents to love on her album. Does she qualify as a singer-songwriter now? --Geekboy6 (talk) 05:44, 6 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]
I don't think so. Just because she says she "writing songs" doesn't mean that she's actually writing them. Until a cd comes out with "Selena Gomez" listed as one of the songwriters she shouldn't be called a singer-songwriter. Edgehead5150 06:40, 6 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Hannah Montana

Ok, she was Mikayla for two episodes, but in a new series 3 episode 'Ready, Set, Don't Go', I swear I could see Selena in the bunch of people surrounding Oliver when he raps about Miley's new (non)driving lisence. I dunno if there is anywhere that proves this though. 202.7.183.130 (talk) 06:12, 9 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]

You do need to provide a source before it can be included. Carl.bunderson (talk) 04:07, 16 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Feud with Miley Cyrus

According with Damicatz the sources about the feud with Miley doesn't are verifiable. (see this discussion) So we have to delete it. Renanx3 (talk) 15:13, 16 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]

"Is not verifiable". Anyway, I believe it's sorted now. --Charitwo (talk) 15:23, 16 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Don't correct me, I hate it. Well, I don't understand: you remove it when I put in the Cyrus' section, but here, with the same things and the same sources you not remove, I really don't understand. Renanx3 (talk) 16:33, 16 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Then perhaps you should type correctly? Take a second and review what you've typed, preview it and make sure it looks good, that's what the button is there for. I can't properly discuss this issue if I don't understand what you are saying. This makes no sense to me,
"but here, with the same things and the same sources you not remove,"
--Charitwo (talk) 18:58, 16 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Ok sorry, I'm not North-American/English. Well, I said that you delete this on the Miley Cyrus page, but here, in Selena Gomez page, you didn't delete. I want know the reason. Renanx3 (talk) 19:20, 16 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]
I did remove it, but someone added it back in. You shoild really learn check article history before you accuse someone of something. I wasn't about to start an edit war and revert his changes. --Charitwo (talk) 19:36, 16 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]
But you say that the sources are "sorted", Do you agree or you don't about put this information? Renanx3 (talk) 19:41, 16 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]
When I said sorted, I meant by my removing the information, it was sorted in the sense of being compliant with WP:NOT. Meaning I agreed, yes, we should delete it, so I did]. --Charitwo (talk) 19:45, 16 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]

This story was covered by People, MTV and Fox as cited, which are normally considered reliable sources for entertainment industry stories. The section also implicitly handles some other issues beyond the story (the youtube videos, relation to Lovato) that people would keep adding anyway. Gimmetrow 19:49, 16 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Regardless of the sources, it still doesn't belong, like Damicatz, wikipedia BLP articles are not tabloid articles. It's not encyclopedic, it's gossip. --Charitwo (talk) 20:01, 16 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]
It's an event reported in multiple reliable sources. How is it a scandal? Gimmetrow 20:08, 16 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]
But I said it before: If wikipedia doesn't want gossips, we should delete ALL these things in the Miley Cyrus personal life's section, right? Because Miley's friendship, relationship and other things are gossips. Renanx3 (talk) 20:15, 16 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Gossip, not scandal. Perhaps a more appropriate link to explain my reasoning. --Charitwo (talk) 20:18, 16 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Vanessa Hudgens' nude photo was a scandal, don't? Renanx3 (talk) 20:21, 16 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]
The section even describes it as alleged, meaning gossip, and includes two references from both parties stating it was a rumor and completely false. It does not belong. --Charitwo (talk) 20:33, 16 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]
This whole issue is media created drama denied by all the parties involved, as per the references. It does not belong as explained above. I vote to remove it as it adds nothing of encyclopedic value to this article. --NrDg 21:07, 16 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]
How do I know I did not win it, I do not need to vote, let's just delete it. Renanx3 (talk) 15:13, 16 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]
This reports an event: the videos and the statements by the principal players. Neither the story nor its coverage is derogatory and there is nothing about "privacy" involved here. It's not reporting a false story as true. The event has significant coverage by multiple independent reliable sources, which makes it prima facie notable. Furthermore, it provides a touch of human interest to the bio. Gimmetrow 04:53, 17 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]
No, it doesn't, there is no consensus here to keep it. --Charitwo (talk) 14:51, 17 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]
So what we gonna do? Renanx3 (talk) 16:02, 17 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]

No concensus to delete, no strong policy reason to delete. Editor judgment call as to whether or not it belongs. One editor who strongly wants it in the article and restored it after it was deleted per WP:BRD. Until some consensus forms for deletion it does not harm to the article for it to stay in. --NrDg 16:10, 17 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]

In short... it will be deleted? Renanx3 (talk) 16:59, 17 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Let it sit and see if other editors get involved. Revisit the issue in a few days. --NrDg 17:41, 17 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Ok, thank you. Renanx3 (talk) 17:44, 17 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Well, I think we should vote by now to keep or delete it, because it will end with nothing resolved. 201.16.201.134 (talk) 18:29, 22 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Make It Happen

Why was that song deleted from her songs? That song was clearly heard on the promo of the new Wizards of Waverly Place episode. Plus, she did that song with David Henrie. --Geekboy6 (talk) 00:27, 18 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]

As I said in the edit summary, the Wizards of Waverly Place soundtrack does not show up on http://disneymusic.disney.go.com/index.html list of current and future albums so any reference to its existence needs a verifiable reliable source. The most reliable of them, the label's official site, does not mention it. If this was promo of the song and the credits were part of the promo, specify as a reference the episode the song promo was included in, need name of episode and date broadcast so this info can be verified by others. A better reference would be something published and that should eventually show up. --NrDg 00:42, 18 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]
This was anticipated ever since Selena and David mentioned that on a YouTube video. This is the episode, Plan B. --Geekboy6 (talk) 01:52, 18 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]
That episode has not been broadcast yet. In what episode and at what date did you see the promo? I'll add back what I can verify but I need to see the promo before I can do that. I have the first runs of the broadcast episodes on my Tivo so can check. --NrDg 02:08, 18 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]
The promo started airing when Baby Cupid was on commercial last Sunday. It's still airing on Disney Channel. The episode will air right when 2009 begins on New Year's. --Geekboy6 (talk) 03:13, 18 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]
I watched the promo. It is a promo for the New Years episode. The episode name was not mentioned. It showed Alex and Justin playing instruments and singing. What they were singing was not identified. There were no credits mentioned or shown as to name of song, who wrote the song and who the performers really were (it could have been lip synced though unlikely). This is not sufficient for inclusion in the article. When the episode airs and the end credits for the episode are shown, only then we could use this as a reference. --NrDg 15:14, 18 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Apparently, the name of the song is "Make It Happen". So it's not under her songs because of the reason you gave it, that the Wizards soundtrack is not available in the website you gave? --Geekboy6 (talk) 18:25, 2 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Website

I noticed that Selena Gomez is having a website up. Can we put it up yet? Here's the website. [4] --Geekboy6 (talk) 20:22, 21 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Nothing there now so is not a useful external link. Also will need some form of proof that this is real and not a poser. --NrDg 20:39, 21 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Well the domain was registered in June.. by some guy in Los Angeles. I think it's Disney but whatever. It's not an actual site yet so we can't put it up. --staka (T) 00:51, 22 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]

SayNow/Duet with Demi

I just found a YouTube video that had what Selena said on her SayNow site. The video is right here. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bNgSGn_Guvg She just said that she just recently did her duet with Demi Lovato for Princess Protection Program. Can the info on the duet be under music yet? The duet is not going to be under her songs yet, because it hasn't aired. But the duet can still be mentioned under music since she mentioned it herself. And the name of the duet is "One In The Same" as she just told someone after a Wizards taping. --Geekboy6 (talk) 17:33, 22 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Normally we don't allow linking to non-official YouTube channels as they, like in this case, contain a copyright violation - strongly doubt the uploader has the legal right to post the interview. Also don't know if the person is actually Selena Gomez in the audio, could be a fraud, although unlikely. If you can find the actual source of the interview and if that is on some site, like a radio station's, that owns the audio, that would be a good reference to use. --NrDg 21:48, 23 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]
The uploader just got that from Selena's SayNow account: http://www.saynow.com/selenagomez but for some reason, the SayNow information is deleted. I'd figured I'd ask first because this seems like a classic example of "hearing it from the horse's mouth". You could upload this site http://www.selenagomezcentral.com/ where you can see a clip of Selena talking about her duet. --Geekboy6 (talk) 03:14, 24 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Unfortunately fansites like http://www.selenagomezcentral.com/ are just as bad as YouTube when it comes to honoring other peoples copyrights so we can't link to them either. If the copyright owner has removed the clip from their site we basically have nothing that we can link to so don't have any usable reference right now. I don't doubt the truth of what you want to put it the article - it is just that we can't until we have a usable reference. --NrDg 03:57, 24 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]
I checked her SayNow site. The information is back. Click on what she said on December 20 from http://www.saynow.com/selenagomez when she clearly said something about her album and her duet. --Geekboy6 (talk) 19:49, 2 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]

American Christians

Why was Selena removed from that category? --Geekboy6 (talk) 18:26, 2 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]

I believe NrDg explained it to you on your talk page. See this. If you need further help, then sure go ahead. --Kanonkas (talk) 18:31, 2 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]
To reiterate, for the benefit of others reading this discussion. See WP:BLP#Categories. Categories must be justified by well referenced article content in that article and "The subject publicly self-identifies with the belief ..." and "are relevant to the subject's notable activities" all of which which also needs to be referenced and shown in the article. She may have stated she is Christian somewhere else but if the article doesn't prove this and show that is meaningful it can't be a category. Note that incorrectly characterizing peoples religious beliefs can be insulting to them - we must be careful. --NrDg 05:36, 22 December 2008 (UTC) --NrDg 18:34, 2 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]

MySpace

I think this could really be her MySpace: http://www.myspace.com/selenagomez even though the age is 96. I think she just made a typo when typing in the age. Plus on her official site, there is a link to that site as well as her YouTube and SayNow accounts. --Geekboy6 (talk) 02:54, 5 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]

1 and 9 are pretty far apart on any keyboard - hard to be a typo. What would really be nice is some reliable publication giving at least one of her pages some mention as being official, then the rest could be vetted by that one. There are a LOT of posers. I am a LOT distrustful. Her Saynow page http://www.saynow.com/selenagomez is likely valid, though, and points to http://www.myspace.com/selenagomez. However, even if her myspace page IS real, how much do we really want to trust it for information when something pretty basic like her age is obviously wrong. --NrDg 03:13, 5 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Her age may be wrong on the MySpace, but you don't have to put your real age (or name) on your account. So i think it could be used as a valid source for info it it is official. Edgehead5150 00:07, 6 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]
I've never used MySpace so I want to ask, do you put your birthdate in your profile or an actual age of yourself? If just an actual age, then it just means that she hasn't had the time to update or even fix it.--staka (T) 00:13, 6 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]
I think you put your birthdate in, if I remember correctly, because it updates your age automatically. Carl.bunderson (talk) 23:43, 8 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Like NrDg, I'm distrustful. If there is any doubt as to the authenticity of a myspace, it should not be linked to. And even if we know it is authentic, I would hesitate to consider it a RS. Carl.bunderson (talk) 23:42, 8 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]

It is linked from her official website (selenagomez.com). I think wanting any more proof is just clutching at straws.

Recent Changes

What are your thoughts on the recent changes on Selena's page? I noticed one of those references was a YouTube video. You think it's about time we added her duet with Demi Lovato? If you're using YouTube videos as references now, you can use http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dXRC7ufGoJY as a reference to the duet Selena has with Demi. The name of the duet is One in the Same and once again, the reference is a classic example of "hearing it from the horse's mouth". --Geekboy6 (talk) 03:00, 12 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Interestingly "hearing it from the horse's mouth" as a concept maps directly on primary sources. We can basically state that Selena Gomez said "xxx", but we can't take her statement as proof that "xxx" is factually accurate. That is why we prefer to use secondary sources who have a reputation for fact checking as references to the accuracy of statement "xxx". --NrDg 15:22, 12 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Debut Album release

There was recent news that Selena's debut album will be released in July. She did say that straight from her SayNow account and it has been announced in other news sites. Can we incorporate this change in the article yet? --Geekboy6 (talk) 16:20, 16 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]

If the news source meets the reliable source requirements and what is added to the article accurately reports what the source says, then you should have no problems putting it in the article. --NrDg 17:32, 16 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Birth information

Edit [5] removed a contributory copyright violation link to an image of a purported form filled out by Gomez where she declared her birth location and date. The image is from page 80 of the May 2008 issue of Bop Magazine, a fan/gossip magazine. The reference was removed as Bob Magazine is not considered a reliable source and the form has no proof that Gomez actually filled it out. I consider the likelihood of this being a fake as extremely small though and think the magazine as a reference (not the image link though) can be considered a reliable source for this particular set of information. --NrDg 16:15, 30 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Cite: "Celebrity Central - Selena Gomez: Snapshot". People Magazine. Retrieved 2009-01-30. Birth Date July 22, 1992 Birth Place Grand Prairie, Texas.

People Magazine is generally considered a reliable source. --NrDg 16:38, 30 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Convenience links like the Bop magazine image are helpful to verify that a cite to an offline magazine is correct and not misinterpreted or made-up. We've all seen instances of that. On the specific content, there is no dispute about the birthdate here - essentially every article, and her own official sites, say the same thing - and I think it's a little excessive to insist on a footnote for this. On location, People may say one thing but other sources, sometimes considered reliable in the entertainment industry, say other things: profiles at MTV and US claim born in New York City and raised in Texas (Grand Prairie). (MSN-music too). Some of these may derive from older versions of this page. Gimmetrow 18:00, 30 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Beezus and Ramona

Is it possible that we can put this movie in her film credits? There's been a lot of news about that. I think a source from E Online can be used. --Geekboy6 (talk) 22:10, 6 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Sonny With a Chance

So Selena is guest starring as herself in an episode of Sonny With a Chance. The article http://www.oceanup.com/2009/02/selena-gomez-sonny-with-a-chance.html pretty much says it. Should this go in her guest appearances yet? --Geekboy6 (talk) 20:16, 15 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]

MySpace again

I know NrDG is very distrustful, but gossip sites always mention what updates have happened on her supposed MySpace. They mention whatever pics have been uploaded and what bulletins she's released. I think there really is a strong possibility that http://www.myspace.com/selenagomez really is her MySpace. --Geekboy6 (talk) 16:46, 4 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Since the page is listed in the Celebrity Directory of MySpace, i think there's no doubt that that's her real page. --FrehleySpace Ace 18:06, 4 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Beezus and Ramona

I just put Beezus and Ramona on her film credits. I think it's pretty much confirmed that there's going to be a film based on the children's book and Selena is starring as Beezus. --Geekboy6 (talk) 18:40, 6 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]

This article is about Selena Gomez, not her mother. No reliable source (gossip sites are not reliable) makes mention of any relationship with Jonas and the principals deny it. --NrDg 20:42, 18 April 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Early Life

Selena Gomez’s mom had her at 16 and at the time, struggled to pay the bills, reports J-14. Selena was born in New York City and raised in Grand Prairie, Texas near her mom’s family.

Mom Mandy Teefey and biological dad Ricardo Joel Gomez, split when Sel was 5. Selena, an only child was raised by her mom and grandmother. Her dad gave her a purity ring when she was 12. Sel and her mom sometimes lived ‘paycheck to paycheck’, but they pulled through.

Selena got into acting because of her mother. ‘My mom did theater, and I love memorizing her lines with her and watching her rehearse. I told her that I wanted to do what she did but on television.’
