"Jai Ho"
Song

"Jai Ho" is an Academy Award-winning Hindi song composed by A. R. Rahman, written by Gulzar, and performed by Sukhwinder Singh and Rahman, for the end credits of the film Slumdog Millionaire (2008), where it accompanies a choreographed dance sequence. The song also features vocals by Mahalakshmi Iyer, Tanvi Shah and Vijay Prakash.[1]. The Pussycat Dolls released a modified version of the song with English lyrics in 2009. This version was named "Jai Ho! (You Are My Destiny)" and saw great success. Jai Ho means 'Come on' in Paki.

Original version

"Jai Ho" was originally composed for the 2008 film Yuvvraaj, but was turned down by director Subhash Ghai who thought the song was not suitable for actor Zayed Khan to perform onscreen.[2] After his Oscar win, A. R. Rahman revealed in an interview that it was Ghai who had asked him to use words Jai Ho in a song. [3] After its inclusion in Slumdog Millionaire, it was later nominated for best song at the 2008 Broadcast Film Critics Association Awards, the 2008 Satellite Awards and at the 2008 Houston Film Critics Society Awards. In 2009, it won the Academy Award for Best Original Song, beating out WALL-E's "Down to Earth" by Peter Gabriel, and "O... Saya", also of Slumdog Millionaire and by A. R. Rahman.[4]

The lyrics are mostly in Hindi, Urdu and Punjabi interspersed with some Spanish lyrics.[5] Alongside Indian music, the song also incorporates aspects of Japanese and Arabic music. According to Rahman, “Jai Ho,” or “Victory to You,” was meant to create “a vision of the whole world celebrating this victory”.[6] Rahman, who performed "Jai Ho" live on The Oprah Winfrey Show on February 23, 2009 with the rest of the original performers, was asked by Winfrey what the song title means. A. R. Rahman then stated "Jai Ho" means "May you be victorious".

In March 2009, Super Cassettes Industries (T-Series), the music company which holds the song's copyright, received nearly $200,000 from the governing Indian National Congress party for its use in its national campaign in the upcoming 2009 Indian General Elections.[7][8] This version will feature altered lyrics sung by Sukhwinder Singh, who performed on the original song. A new video has also already been shot for this version, and it is slated to hit the airwaves soon.[9]

The original version also struck fame at Billboard. It reached 8th position on "Top Digital Track" chart of billboard[10]

Pussycat Dolls version

"Jai Ho"
Song

The song was recorded in 2009 by the Pussycat Dolls with English lyrics, a different key signature and lead vocals from Nicole Scherzinger,[13] produced in collaboration with A. R. Rahman and Ron Fair. Scherzinger explained that the single is an interpretation rather than a remix.[14] The music video, shot in a Vienna train yard, alludes to the dance sequence in the film.[14]

The song was released on February 23, 2009 on the U.S. iTunes Store and released internationally on February 24.[15]

The song initially was released as a promotional single, but then later received a full world-wide release as the first single from the two re-issues of Doll Domination The Mini Collection and Doll Domination 2.0, it will be the fifth overall single to be released from the Dolls since 2008. The song was performed by the Dolls at the 2009 Nickelodeon Kid's Choice Awards and on The Ellen DeGeneres Show. It was also recently added to their opening setlist for Britney's Spears' The Circus Starring: Britney Spears tour.

Critical reception

Digital Spy said that "The Hindi original, which soundtracks the Bollywood dance routine at the end of the movie, is far more urgent and atmospheric, but this remake works nicely enough as a slick, shamelessly opportunistic PCD single. Well, that hollered "JAI HO!" makes for a pretty sweet pop hook, you have to admit".[16]. Entertainment Weekly stated that a cover of the original "Jai Ho" would be a "Jai No" especially by the Pussycat Dolls.

Many people believe that the opening sequence of "Jai Ho" is based on Mozart's Symphony #40 in G Minor. [17] [18] [19] [20]

Chart performance

The song debuted on both the Billboard Hot 100 and Canadian Hot 100 at number 100.[21] The next week the song rose on the Hot 100 from 100 to 15, with downloads for "Jai Ho" up nearly 500%, totaling about 103,000 for the soundtrack version and 27,000 for the Dolls' version, and also debuted on the Pop 100 chart at 20.[22] Sales for both versions were figured into the song's chart placement.[23] As of Monday 16 March, the song has entered top 40 on US radio[24].

On the Canadian Hot 100, the song reached its peak of number five on 14 March, 2009.

"Jai Ho!" entered the UK Singles Chart at #20 on March 22 and two weeks later, rose to #3 giving the Pussycat Dolls their sixth top three single in the country.[25] In Ireland, the song has hit the #1 spot.

The single debuted on the Australian ARIA Singles Chart at number-ten and later peaked at number-one, becoming the Dolls' second #1 hit there.[26] The song has also made waves gaining radio airplay from India and across the Pacific to New Zealand and Fiji. Finally, Jai Ho went to number 1 on the Irish Singles Chart. Out of all the singles released in the Doll Domination era, "Jai Ho!" reached number one in the most countries worldwide.

Music Video

The music video premiered on March 13, 2009[27]. The Pussycat Dolls recreated the last scene from Slumdog Millionaire in the video for “Jai Ho! (You Are My Destiny)” featuring A.R. Rahman. The clip was shot at a Tramway Museum in Vienna, Austria, and was directed by Thomas Kloss.[28] The Indian-based music video starts with people beating drums. Then Nicole Scherzinger is seen entering a tram, and two member of the group, Ashley Roberts and Kimberly Wyatt are listening to music with a phone. After this an "unknown man" follows Nicole onto the tram, and the other two Pussycats take a photo. So, Nicole is seen going out from the train and is in a city mark
