John Small senior

Hi, Tintin. The issue about the start of first-class cricket is rumbling on and I might as well tell you that I have written to the ACS committee requesting that the matter is given priority at the next AGM. In particular, they must disassociate themselves from 1801 which is absurd: that's very POV, I know!  ;-)

Anyway, Small's century is the second one definitely known of and the quality of the teams in that match were undeniably top-class at the time. The only known century before his was scored by John Minshull in 1769 in a match of very dubious quality. Consensus among people I've spoken or written to is that Minshull's century was made in a minor match.

I have not encountered one person who agrees that 1801 was the starting point of first-class cricket and I have not encountered anyone who thinks Small did not score a first-class century. The problem is that the ACS has left 1801 "up in the air" pending further research and so we do not have any clear definition of the timespan of first-class cricket. We have made some progress this year by getting the scorecards from 1744 to 1800 loaded onto CricketArchive where the games are classified as major or minor. All the Hambledon games are major but the Minshull game is minor. It is agreed amongst all the involved parties (i.e., there is a working group of six people who all make frequent historical and statistical contributions to the ACS) that any match currently categorised as major will go into the overall first-class record as soon as an accord can be reached with the ACS as a body. That is why I am rattling the committee's cage. We shall see how things progress.

If you are unhappy with the use of the term first-class cricket in connection with 18th Century cricket, I would suggest you change "first-class" to "major" or even "top-class" so that the terminology is vague without losing the impact. I would have no problem with that at all.

I have spoken to more than one person who agrees with my view that John Small was the greatest batsman of all time until WG came along. Someone (I forget who) published an alltime England XI and Small was in it (so was WG naturally): I would say he probably deserved to be. He really was the outstanding player of his time. --Jack 14:22, 29 October 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Hmm....

You cannot use that either. It comes from http://www.indiadaily.com/editorial/06-06b-04.asp and is copyrighted unless the site specifically says that it is in the public domain. The restriction for pictures is a very frustrating thing, but we have no choice here. Tintin 18:11, 31 October 2005 (UTC)

Yeah I guess ur right....but I wonder how other sites use the same pic...
cos i got it frm cricinfo.com
and as u know its impossible to get a picture which is not copyrited.....
 thanks for ur help.....

Where is wikipedia going?

I presume you mean by having a known list of trusted editors you don't have to worry about checking everything last thing on your cricket watch-list. That's true in the case of cricket, but what about general Wikipedia that isn't monitored by specific interest groups? -- Iantalk 12:48, 1 November 2005 (UTC)[reply]

My quizzing feats

I appeared on Radio in early 1990s when in school (don't remember the exact year). I then appeared on CNBC's Complete Manager Contest 1999 in the regional finals. I was eliminated early (partly due to all those glaring lights and cameras pointed at me) representing my college. I try to participate on quizzes, though right now I'm less active there and it's been more than a year since I last participated in one. How about you? You like quizzes too? Syed Mohammed Hadi

Vanakkam Tintin. Nalla yekkara? That's all the Tamil I know. Syed Mohammed Hadi is my great grandfather. My father's mother's dad. My father Syed Asad Akbar tended to him towards the end of his life when he was battling cancer and shared all his memories with him before he died. My father's mother Zainab Akbar neé Hadi married her first cousin Masood Akbar who was Syed Mohammed Hadi's brother Syed Ali Akbar's son. I know the last names are different but in Shia Islamic culture, if you are "Syed" last names don't matter. BTW we are Abidi Syeds so technically our last name should have been XYZ Abidi (from the fourth Imam). I don't know how word of mouth references are verified. If you would like I can give you my dad's email address. Salmaakbar 9:08 AM, 2nd November 2005 (Houston)

you could be right, I changed the tag from speedy to cleanup, just to be sure. Thanks for pointing it out --Isolani 17:57, 6 November 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Your tag is fine. I wanted to make sure that anyone coming across it before it got deleted would get to the correct information. You didn't do anything wrong. I'm just going above and beyond. --WAvegetarian 18:48, 6 November 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Updated DYK query Did you know? has been updated. A fact from the article Chetan Chauhan, which you recently created, has been featured in that section on the Main Page. If you know of another interesting fact from a recently created article, then please suggest it on the "Did you know?" talk page.

West Indian cricketers' first names

Hello again, Tintin. I see you've edited a lot of West Indian cricketers' first names on List of Test cricketers. Maybe you're not aware that this list is generated automatically from List of West Indian Test cricketers. So you need to make the edits on the latter page (and also on List of West Indian ODI cricketers if applicable), otherwise they will get overwritten when List of Test cricketers is next regenerated.

Ah. Well, I suppose it's best to remove it - after all, it's not the obvious place to look when the record is eventually broken. 195.159.185.127 22:24, 27 November 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Looks like a Vanity Page to me too. I've voted for deletion. --Kunal (talk) 03:46, 29 November 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Some time ago we had a discussion about RfAs which are obviously going to fail. The compromise we reached was to try and change the transclusion of the RfA page to a simple link. This way, voting and comments can continue, without cluttering the main RfA page. Unless you have another reason for not doing so, I will go ahead and revert your change to that page. Lord Fred Beauclerk

Hello, Tintin. The answer is that there were no higher scores before Ward made his 278 but there is a big question mark against Beauclerk's innings. The ACS don't regard that match as "first-class", though I am inclined to think it is marginally first-class given that most of the players were reasonably prolific. The ACS view is that first Small then Aylward then Ward held the record; I think WG was the one to beat Ward.

The argument about which games were first-class and which were not is bound to rumble on and on. --Jack 20:16, 29 November 2005 (UTC)[reply]

IP check

You'll have to ask at the arbitration committee. They have the permissions to check possible sockpuppets. =Nichalp «Talk»= 03:54, 2 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Be my guest! Well, so long as the trivia is not too trivial: the notes on List of Test cricket triple centuries are intended to be a pen portrait of the match context. As you will see, I've added a couple of notes to List of tied one-day internationals already, but I am sure there are lots more. The links to the scorecards also need adding, if you want something to do. Here is the master list: [1].

Hmm - is the list at the right place? We usually say "One-day Internationals" (with rather funky capitalisation). Perhaps it should be List of tied One-day Internationals or Tied One-day Internationals or even Tied ODI or Tied ODIs (like Tied Test). And do we need "cricket match(es)" in the title? With redirects as necessary, of course. -- ALoan (Talk) 17:21, 2 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]

hello and thanks for your message. Although I am in Tamilnadu for last 6 years, I could not manage to have a working knowledge of Tamil, although I am trying to learn. As such, I am unable to participate in the AfD for this entry. Happy new year. --Bhadani 15:10, 3 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Cheers for your message

Ah yes, we briefly worked on Ravi Shastri's entry - now that was worthwhile, but sorry I didn't finish on that one. I should remark that I was just reading some soccer articles, most of which were written to a standard a 10 year old would be ashamed of. The same cannot be said for cricket, which is covered well, so keep up your good work.--HighHopes 15:45, 3 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]
