Edelweiss Air AG is a charter airline based in Zürich, Switzerland. It operates passenger services to the Mediterranean, Red Sea, Maldives, Kenya, Caribbean, South Asia (Sri Lanka) and Canary Islands. Its main base is Zürich Airport[1].

History

The airline was founded on October 19, 1995 in Bassersdorf, Switzerland with just one airliner, a McDonnell Douglas MD-83. In 1998, the company decided to re-equip their fleet to Airbus A320 aircraft. In 1999, the company added long haul Airbus A330-200 planes. In 2006, by the 10th anniversary of its first flight, the company has grown to 240 full-time employees. It carried more than 720,000 passengers in 2005.[citation needed]

The company's name derives from the Swiss unofficial national flower, the Edelweiss. Edelweiss Air’s motto is Flying the Swiss way, showcasing its focus on dependability, punctuality and friendliness. In 2001, 2002, 2003 and 2004 Edelweiss Air received the golden Travelstar Award for its excellent achievements. [citation needed]

Edelweiss Air is wholly owned by Kuoni Travel Group and has 190 employees (as of March 2007)[1]. Since 8.2.2008 Kuoni sold the operating rights of the airline to Swiss International Air Lines and in exchange received rights to sell hotel capacities via the Swiss sales network. The airline will be operated independently.[2]
