Reversion of special characters

Why when I edit articles do special characters (arrows, accented characters) sometimes suddenly spontaneously turn into question marks? See for example Treasure Hunters (TV series) in which a minor edit by me nowhere near any of them caused every arrow and accented character on the page to mutate. It's most likely the browser you're using, or the character encoding that your browser is using at the moment. Have you tried changing the encoding to Unicode UTF-8? --JD[^{don't talk}|_email] 21:45, 20 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Hey Otto4711 - We sometimes disagree on the CFDs but I wanted to say I appreciate you persistently making relevant points on the current LGBT-related CFDs. I'm really going to stay out of it as much as possible because I feel, strongly, that the CFDs are getting bogged down with a lot of people making nominations to make a point, or to implement their personal philosophies about the significance of particular identities. TPIR pricing games

What I was hoping to accomplish is to get people actually working towards something instead of just talking. AfD can have that effect: it's a debate, everyone debates, but often people are overly hesitant to take action. I agree, there was some discussion of a retired vs. non-retired solution but that didn't have consensus either, clearly. Hopefully if a discussion can be had where the point is how best to organize the articles, then that can be properly addressed. But none of the hoping for merging will go anywhere if no one actually puts together the more general articles. IMO, that can be done, at first, without redirecting the individual game articles. (BTW, I don't, myself, think the retired vs. non-retired idea is the best. Why wouldn't a simple break-up alphabetically be the best idea? Just copying: Letters with accents or diacritics should generally be avoided in sort keys, because they are sorted incorrectly by the Mediawiki software. For example, the software sorts "á" after "z", which is not correct in any language. For this reason, articles with accented characters in the title will almost certainly require an explicit sort key instead of relying on the default "sort by article title" behavior. For example, the article about the Hungarian town of Ács uses Acs as its sort key. As someone involved in reverting my article, I'm sure you're aware that I am unhappy about my Wikipedia article and have been for a long time. I've found that no one at Wikipedia is interested in responding to my rationale for wanting my article pared down to the bare bones minimum in accordance with Wikipedia's own policy at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Biographies_of_living_persons and no one seems to care about my concerns or wishes whatsoever. This is not a game to me. Your hobby is impacting my life. I won't bother putting that in all caps, or bold, because there is no internet typeface that can convey this. I have to rely on your ability to empathize and weigh the triviality of my article's value to Wikipedia vs. the impact on my life. The fact that I am at the mercy of strangers is infuriating.

I sincerely hope that none of you are ever in a position remotely similar to mine, in which your core identity is challenged daily in every arena, from the public street to the highest courts. In which your life is chased by a tragic event that everyone is determined to have follow you to your own grave.

I'm queer. My core identity gets challenged on a daily basis too, so the "my oppression is worse than your oppression" game cuts no ice with me. It is to say the least disingenuous for you to claim that you are harmed by an article that merely collects things that you yourself have freely said in interviews. WP:BLP says in relevant part, "When in doubt, biographies should be pared back to a version that is completely sourced, neutral, and on-topic." Images, for 6 year olds

This is how I find images for my articles.

Find who the copyright owner is. Email the place you found it. Email the subject. Email the best authority on who took the picture, and email the photographer. 99% of the time the photographer will be the copyright holder. If the photographer is dead, it may pass to the subject. It may pass to a library or archives if the photographer took a lot of images.
Once you get a solid answer on who owns the copyright, send them a very, very nice email that explains who you are and what you are doing, and why you need their permission. I have many emails I have sent to various photographers, libraries, subjects, etc., asking them for permission to use their photos (if you want a copy I can send one to you). The following is the release Wikipedia gives for editors to send: I own the copyright to the images attached. I grant permission to copy, distribute and/or modify these documents under the terms of the GNU Free Documentation License, Version 1.2 or any later version published by the Free Software Foundation; with no Invariant Sections, no Front-Cover Texts, and no Back-Cover Texts. By placing their name at the bottom of that statement, they agree that you can put the image on Wikipedia. Be nice in your email. I can't stress that enough. Some photographers will consider what you're asking. Some will ask their lawyers. Some will turn you down. That's how much fun this is. If they turn you down, find another image. You will not be able to use their image, even if it's already in the article. You will have to put the image up for speedy deletion. Respect their artistic rights and all.
If they grant you permission, thank them profusely. Then send an email to permissions@wikipedia.org with the release statement in italics above and the name and contact information of the copyright holder. Attach the image(s) in question to the email to Wikipedia. You will get a response in 24 hours with a ticket number. The image in question is already supposedly released to the PD and is already on WIkipedia but it's supposedly released by an organization. Imagery, yes, drives me nuts. If the image came on board a couple of years ago or before, that may have been before image policy was so strict. The image may have been uploaded from a scan in some book or magazine, and from the appearance of it, does not look like it is from a Public Domain source. Have you contacted Sarria himself? Can Sarria or whoever is interested in promoting his legacy provide you with the answer? Does the San Francisco Public Library have archives on Sarria? How about the SF GLBT Historical Society? It was uploaded in 2007, after the big crackdown. I think it's a publicity/glamour shot perhaps intended for press kits and the like. The guy who uploaded it is working on tracking down who actually took the photo and re-confirming the rights and is going to be meeting with Jose next week. Re: Help with image licensing

Hi, the easiest way to do this is to have a spokesperson from the ICS e-mailing us at permissions-en AT wikimedia DOT org explaining the situation. In clear, they need to state that the photographer (it would be nice to have his name btw, in order to give proper credits) and copyright owner gave the complete rights of the photography to the organization, and that they are entitled to release all these rights into the public domain, for all purposes. I don't think more proof would be needed, as long as the statement is credible and comes from a verifiable e-mail address (we obviously are very wary of gmail addresses ;). I have been having a discussion with another user who believes that "Hot Tub" (Drawn Together) is a notable article because it is about a television series pilot which was reviewed by USA Today and The New York Times. I had originally redirected the article to the list of Drawn Together episodes, but I recreated the article with citations from the reviews. You have since reverted the recreation of the article due to a lack of notability. Do you believe the two reviews to be insufficient in establishing notability?

Wow, I don't even remember doing that. I must have checked the close of the AFD and done it on that basis. Anyway, in looking at the article history and reading the proffered sources I have to say that I would not support an independent article for the episode. I don't believe that they are substantively about the episode in specific (although I can't read the LA Times article in its entirety) but instead are about the series in general There are elements about the pilot in each of the articles that I could read in their entirety but I just don't think that there's as yet sufficient material for the article to pass notability guidelines. Compare those sources to the sources available for other TV episode articles like Sugar & Spice (Picket Fences) or The Puppy Episode or some of the episodes in Category:GA-Class The Simpsons articles. Given that Drawn Together is completely unsourced, I suggest using the material that's been turned up and concentrate on improving that article. Then if the pilot or any other episode should attract future attention an article can be spun out. It may be beneficial to have a broader community discussion before going to work on it, but I don't know what the best forum for that would be. Otto4711 (talk) 19:17, 22 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for the clarification, Dabomb. I always understood MOS:IMAGES Start an article with a right-aligned lead image or InfoBox. to mean articles should have at least one image. If I were picking just one fair use image for the Pre-Stonewall list it would be File:Cbshomo2.jpg - black and white, shows the man in shadows, seems to typify the era. For the 1970s I like the File:1975 Barney Miller2.jpg image, but that might just be that I liked the show and those characters. Don't be discouraged by people like Epeefleche and Wassermann, who, I can attest, after dealing with them on numerous AfDs/CfDs, are terribly insecure about their backgrounds and toss around accusations like rice at a wedding. I'm currently admonishing User:Epeefleche here about his tone toward you in the Jewish categories discussion. I am specifically concerned about his thinly veiled allegations of anti-Semitic bias on your part. He is responding in part with an "Otto called me paranoid" defense, which is attempt to deflect the charge. That said, it really doesn't help anyone when you do that, because now you've given him the high ground. So I'll once again ask you to moderate your tone when dealing with people like that. I didn't remove the Stonewall citation, just moved it to a footnote where it belongs. McIntire was the sort of fellow who talked about rebuilding the Ark and floating it off his Cape May hotel. You can't take his off-the-cuff quotations too seriously. Category:Disney Villains deletion review

In regard to your comment in the deletion review, it seems that you have not read the reasons for recreating this. "Category:Disney Villains" will not be for listing characters as villains, but to include merchandise from a franchise named Disney Villains. This category would include direct-to-video films, video games, etc. I must say that I not only respect consensus regarding the deletion of categories for villains, but I support it. Therefore, a category named "Disney Villains" is not for classifying characters from Disney as villains, but to add merchandising and other stuff into it. --LoЯd ۞pεth 01:36, 1 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]

You two should cool it on DRV. Lord's proprosed category isn't obviously POV, likewise it might be at risk of hero/villain POV inclusion by editors who don't grasp the purpose of the cat. Sure, it can't hurt. The ones I included were just the ones I had the energy to compile. I avoided doing most of the eponymous ones b/c there were so many. If you add them remember to add the "keep" and "no consensus" ones too so I don't get accused of maintaining a biased list. But given this article's name, WP:MIXEDCAPS applies, so a "go" with the miscapitalization would not work without a redirect, although List of characters from total drama island would be a better choice as it would aid with all miscapitalizations. Recently, you injected the notion of "Jehovah's Witness rights" into the titles of these mature articles:

The phrase "Jehovah's Witness rights" seems odd and unencyclopedic. While many of the discussed cases involve "civil rights", neither Jehovah's Witnesses nor non-Witness scholars have ever suggested a subcategory for "Jehovah's Witness rights" or a unique application of "rights of Jehovah's Witnesses". Ironically, several of the cases do not even involve "rights" per say, but matters of process and equal application.

You might be interested in re-reading the discussion at Wikipedia:Categories_for_discussion/Log/2009_July_16#Category:Cases_involving_Jehovah.27s_Witnesses. I'm quite sure your unilateral changes to these article names (listed above) would have failed to get consensus. The former article names are superior to the names you selected.
