Marshall Strabala is an acclaimed American architect who designs well-known office buildings, performing arts venues, and convention and exhibition spaces. Strabala has designed more than 50 notable buildings worldwide, including Burj Dubai, soon to become the world’s tallest building, nearing completion in Dubai, United Arab Emirates.[1]

Along with the Burj Dubai, he has designed three of what will soon become the world’s ten tallest buildings, including the Shanghai Tower[2] and the Nanjing Greenland Financial Center (to be completed in 2009).

A member of the American Institute of Architects, Strabala is LEED certified, recognition that distinguishes building professionals with the knowledge and skills to successfully steward green building practices and principles.[3]

Biography

Strabala graduated from Harvard University’s Graduate School of Design in March 1988.[4]

Later that year, he joined Skidmore Owings and Merrill (SOM) in Chicago, Illinois as a designer. Strabala worked there for 18 years, and was made an Associate Partner in Charge of Design. He oversaw the design of Burj Dubai, 5 Canada Square in London, United Kingdom and other buildings across Europe, Asia and North America.

In March 2006, Strabala joined Gensler global architectural firm as Director of Design. [5] and led the design work for the 120-story Shanghai Tower, which will include office and retail space, a luxury hotel and a public observatory.[6][7]

Strabala currently divides his time between homes in Shanghai, Houston and Chicago. He often participates in lectures for his peers and design students, giving presentations at many universities; including Texas A&M University and Louisiana State University.[8][9]

In January 2009, Strabala delivered a lecture about the Shanghai Tower to architects, educators and architecture students at a seminar in Seoul, South Korea hosted by the Architectural Institute of Korea (AIK), the sole academic organization of architecture in Korea. At the event, Strabala addressed the sustainable and well-planned design, materials and construction plans for the building which had its groundbreaking in Shanghai less than two months earlier. [10]

In spring 2009, Strabala was interviewed and quoted for the Economist Magazine’s Intelligence Unit special report on IT and Sustainability. Addressing his Shanghai Tower and its sustainable features,“We’re designing it like a Thermos bottle that’s close to 2,100 feet tall,” says Marshall Strabala, director of design for Gensler, the global architecture firm responsible for the skyscraper’s design and sustainability strategy. The top of the office building will have a wind farm of 54 vertical-axis wind turbines generating 540,000 kwh of electricity per year—enough to power up to 400 homes. There will also be systems to collect rainwater and condensation. These and other sustainability elements will be computer-controlled and linked through a variety of enterprise and application software that will be controlled by the building’s owner, Shanghai Tower & Construction. “We couldn’t do what we do today without IT,” Mr Strabala says. [11]

Awards

His professional achievements have been recognized with more than 10 awards and honors, including AIA Honor Awards (2), ASHRAE Excellent in Engineering Awards (2), and the Chicago Architecture Club’s Burnham Prize.[12]
