Measurements and consistency

Apart from the "Tallest in varied sports" section, all the measurements are in feet and inches. Only one nation measures peoples heights in imperial units (the USA), the rest use Metric units (the UK included - height is measured in centimetres in medical records).

I propose a change that all heights on this page are displayed either in centimetres or metres, not a mix of both with imperial units in brackets to make the page universal.

Primo Carnera??

He's not the tallest boxer, not evern the tallest Heavyweight champion. GoodDay (talk) 19:12, 6 December 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Therefore, I've removed him from the article. GoodDay (talk) 21:37, 6 December 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Good call. I was skeptical of that one, but I didn't know enough about boxing to say.--T. Anthony (talk) 18:59, 7 December 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Pier Gerlofs Donia was the tallest (self declared) monarch, standing at 7 ft 5, and thus I added the last king of Fryslan to the list. -The Bold Guy- (talk) 16:15, 1 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

But what is he doing on the "Tallest living in various nations" list? Also, his article makes it perfectly clear that there's no conclusive evidence on his exact height. --Anshelm '77 (talk) 16:11, 30 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Greate Pier is a half-legendary person. There are no reliable records of his body lenght and his grave is unknown, so no measurements of his skeleton are possible. Therefore this interesting hero of Frisian folklore has no place in the list of tallest people and certainly not with a defined length, because that can only be conjecture. I have already removed him once. This is after all an encyclopedia and not a nationalist playground. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Paaskynen (talkcontribs) 07:09, 13 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Explanation

This was not "List of tall humans" for a reason. We do not have lists of merely "tall" things or beings. (List of tall ships is referring to a kind of ship not its height) In addition see the results of Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/List of short men (2nd nomination). However "List of tallest" are allowed. A featured example of this is List of tallest buildings in Providence.--T. Anthony (talk) 11:00, 25 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Tallest NFL player

According to pro-football-reference.com, Richard Sligh--who played two games for the Oakland Raiders--stood 7 feet tall. That would put him ahead of Morris Stroud as tallest NFLer ever. The espn.com article used as the citation, incidentally, makes no mention of Stroud holding the NFL height record--just that he was 6'10". PeteF3 (talk) 02:13, 15 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Good catch, thanks.--T. Anthony (talk) 07:35, 12 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Sultan Kosen

Why isn't Sultan Kosen in the list of people over 8 foot tall when he is mentioned to be taller than this in the article? —Preceding unsigned comment added by 87.194.223.126 (talk) 20:51, 22 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]

That section originated with the deletion of Category:People over eight feet tall. I just put all the names in it to the list. Kosen was not in the category at that time. Also I think there's some dispute on his height.--T. Anthony (talk) 09:17, 23 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Patrick Connor

This page says he's American, while his own page says he's Irish. GeneCallahan (talk) 13:42, 10 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]

BS

This page has more bulls--t than a rodeo pooper scooper. 69.232.96.183 (talk) 04:53, 21 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Sadly these kind of pages tend to encourage promotion and distortion. This was not my intent on creation. I wanted everything listed to be sourced and if anyone wishes to remove all unsourced claims I'd support that.--T. Anthony (talk) 08:49, 6 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Not a popularity contest

Please stop adding any tall guy you happen to like, even if they are notable for height. That is not the point of the list. If need be I'll remove all the "by profession" segments or see about protecting this. This is for tallest people not "tall people I think are really cool."--T. Anthony (talk) 21:35, 19 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Robert Pershing Wadlow

Mr. Wadlow should not be in the list of CURRENT LIVING people as he died in 1940. --DrJos (talk) 11:09, 2 September 2008 (UTC) He was also not 9' tall, he was 8' 11.1. See the Robert Wadlow wikipedia link for details.[reply]

Anyway, Wadlow was a true giant. I think he truly was 9' tall. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 193.172.170.26 (talk) 07:45, 12 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Confusion involving Richard Kiel

In this articel it says he is dead but in his main article and everywhere else I see no confirmation of this. Maybe it could be changed to tallest American actor still living as Matthew McGrory would be the tallest dead american actor to my knowladge. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 204.62.200.20 (talk) 21:36, 3 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Igor Vovkovinskiy

At 7'8" he's as tall as George Bell, so who is the tallest American? I remember reading about Igor Vovkovinskiy in my local paper years ago and was fascinated that at 6 years of age he was over 6 feet tall. I also find it interesting that he was flown to the US to have a growth removed from his pituitary as a charitable act by the Mayo Clinic, of whose employ he is now in.

I've been wondering for years what ever happened to this "Pituitary Giant" and now I'm more intrigued than ever to find out that he's a US citizen doing Tech Support for the Mayo clinic. For me he's a Notable Name and a contender for the tallest living US citizen, if not the US citizen with the biggest feet. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 67.226.138.145 (talk) 20:58, 17 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Well if he is notable, write the article first. Then after you have an article that meets the notability requirements for biographies add him back into the article. A new name 2008 (talk) 22:31, 17 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]
That's a tricky catch-22. If he's only notable because of his height, then it could be argued that he doesn't deserve his own article. But if he doesn't have an article then he won't get on this list, in spite of shorter individuals being listed? He is notable for his role in the Obama campaign, however - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2dB5OVdgIOc  — 86.1.163.237 (talk) 21:27, 3 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Normal v. abnormal

Who's the tallest person not suffering from a pituitary disorder? Dynzmoar (talk) 12:37, 28 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Touch the Clouds. Great Gall (talk) 17:53, 28 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Traditionally Angus MacAskill is listed as the tallest person without a pituitary or other condition. I might add Martin Van Buren Bates. True the list of people with gigantism, and the category, list him as having gigantism. However he lived into his 80s and, so far as I know, was never diagnosed with a disorder. I'm thinking it's just convenient to place him as having gigantism as there is no denial of it the way there is for MacAskill.--T. Anthony (talk) 04:32, 8 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]
I think also Bao Xishun has no disorder? Also the wrestler Jorge González (wrestler) was measured in the 2000 silver Guinness at 7'6, not 7'7.Halbared (talk) 17:14, 9 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Suleiman Ali Nashnush - Libyan who may be the tallest basketball player ever at 8.25m (245 cm). (b.1943 d.1991)

I think the writer meant 8.25 feet. 8.25m (meters) would be astoundingly tall —Preceding unsigned comment added by 66.222.252.68 (talk) 23:39, 29 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]

We Have Some Problems

In the basketball players listing. At first someone added a double link to Sun Ming Ming. When I restored the link though, it links to a jazz musician. Can someone please make appropriate corrections? AllStarZ (talk) 05:14, 6 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]

It seems as if Shawn Bradley( Dallas Mavericks, among other teams) was left off the list. His height was documented @ 7'6, however Yao is only 7'5", but since Yao is a worldwide phenomemon, people like to exaggerate a bit on his height. Also omitted was Pavel Pozkolvin who was 7'4". He recently spent several seasons in the NBA as well. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 65.161.131.190 (talk) 16:27, 21 April 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Yao might be taller, especially as height can diminish with age, but this is far from confirmed. In addition the claim she's taller was unsourced and done by anonymous IPs. I've found sources that say she is taller, but they're mostly blogs and one uncertain Chinese site. In a case like this Chinese sites might be unreliable. By the same token I'll try to look for non-US sites on Allen.--T. Anthony (talk) 20:47, 18 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]

On finding more non-Chinese sources I've decided to move Yao up, but Sandy Allen still belongs in the former section.--T. Anthony (talk) 20:53, 18 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I added Zeng Jinlian (she's on Wikipedia, but that brings the total number over eight feet to 13, whereas other sources list it as 12) —Preceding unsigned comment added by 206.211.148.73 (talk) 01:12, 12 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]

She was in the original version and on March 9 she was in the over eight-foot section. However in every tall/tallest list people seem to remove her. I don't know if it's because of her scoliosis or her failure to be either European or American. (There's a bit of a Americentric/Eurocentric thing on Wikipedia)--T. Anthony (talk) 07:40, 12 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]
"because of... her failure to be either European or American" -- Oh please! That must be one of the silliest suggestions I've encountered in months.
GeneCallahan (talk) 13:46, 10 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]
I think I was in a mood that day. Still even though I mostly vote Republican I do think Wikipedia is a tad US/UK-centered. This is just a product of demographics. There are far more British and American Wikipedians than East Asian ones. Therefore if an American were removed he or she I think might be put back faster by those who've heard of him or her.--T. Anthony (talk) 08:49, 6 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

In the top of the page, Daniel Gilchrist is listed as Tallest actor at 7'7" (231.6 cm), but does not have a linking page.
In the top of the page, Matthew McGrory is listed as Second tallest actor at 7'6" (229 cm) when he died.
In the Actors section, Matthew McGrory is listed as Tallest actor at 7'6" (229 cm) when he died.
Is Daniel Gilchrist actually taller than Matthew McGrory? If so, maybe he should get a page of his own, and he definitely should be listed in the Tallest Actors section. If not, then he should be removed from the page, and Matthew McGrory should be made Tallest actor on the top of the page (Tallest Men).Jon (talk) 03:12, 2 June 2009 (UTC)[reply]

I added Daniel Gilchrist to the Actors section, stating that he is the tallest actor, and making Matthew McGrory the second tallest actor.Jon (talk) 02:02, 5 June 2009 (UTC)[reply]

tallet man

I have a question how do you know that leonid measures 8 feet 6 inches and is the tallest person in the world since he refuses to be measured? —Preceding unsigned comment added by 96.225.17.139 (talk) 14:53, 7 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]

The tallest living man

Leonid Stadnyk, the tallest living man, has admittedly refused a new measuring by Guiness in 2008, but the Ukrain Gaint was already measuring by Guiness in August 2007, and here the height of 8,5 feet was confirmed. Werefore must Mr. Stadnyk measuring again itself, when his height already confirmed in 2007? —Preceding unsigned comment added by 91.7.117.33 (talk) 17:57, 14 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]

That's not true, Stadnyk never agreed to be measured, and appears to be only 7 ft 6 inches tall.98.242.74.75 (talk) 09:30, 25 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]
He was dumped by Guinness, which never confirmed his height to begin with.Ryoung122 07:36, 23 August 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Trijntje Keever

Should Trijntje Keever not be added to this list, since she was 260 cm long, longer then the female who holds the current #1 position? I don't see at this moment no reason why she should not be added to the list. Amelie poulain (talk) 22:19, 18 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]

I quite agree. Her wikipedia page says that she was over nine feet tall when she died. But that was using an old measuring system. In today's measurements she would be 8'5½". She was taller than Zeng Jinlian. Jon (talk) 08:10, 18 June 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Again and again people seem to forget that Keever's height is an unverified claim.--Anshelm '77 (talk) 00:09, 6 September 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Richard Kiel in Actors section

I would like to add that Richard Kiel is not even listed in the actors section of the list of tallest people. Your wikipedia page on him lists his height as this: 7 feet 1.5 inches (2.18 m) tall. That puts him taller than other actors listed. He should be listed.Jon (talk) 02:12, 2 June 2009 (UTC)[reply]

He is not the tallest actor, or the tallest american actor thoughHalbared (talk) 10:26, 2 June 2009 (UTC)[reply]
No he is not the tallest actor. But that is not what that section is about. it is titled "tallest actors". Richard Kiel is taller than most of the actors listed. How can they be put in that list and not him? In that short list only two actors are taller than Richard Kiel.Jon (talk) 13:26, 2 June 2009 (UTC)[reply]
I added Richard Kiel to the Tallest Actors section of the page. He is marked as tallest actor in a television show.Jon (talk) 01:59, 5 June 2009 (UTC)[reply]

How is it that Richard Kiel was removed from the Tallest Actors list? He is taller than all of the actors in that section except Matthew McGrory and Peter Mayhew. Why allow actors shorter than Richard Kiel to be in the list, yet exclude him?Jon (talk) 03:42, 2 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]

The shorter actors have the notability of being nominated or winning major awards, and achievement given their large stature. It's not just a list of tall actors or it would be flooded, like the main list. And there are other actors taller than Kiel that have been in television.Halbared (talk) 07:11, 2 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Lou Ferrigno

I added Lou Ferrigno to the Tallest Actors section as the Tallest actor to come from an Italian American familyJon (talk) 02:30, 5 June 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Slavko Vranes

I added non-metric height to Slavko Vranes. That is all I added here.Jon (talk) 13:01, 6 June 2009 (UTC)[reply]

The Tallest Male

The tallest male was 10"5 named Qwinse J. Opletoe Of Rome He died by falling in to on coming traffic In the by coming to The USA on a Trip.

The length of Leonid Stadnyk

Leonid Stadnyk, the ukrain giant, is really about 2,50 metre (8,4 feet) tall. The gigantism expert Michael Besser has medical measured Stadnyk in the year 2006. Stadnyk had then through pressure of the press to measure itself.

What with the credible length from 7,6 feet through photographs: particularly througth the perspektive, you might not to bank on photographs alone. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 91.7.103.4 (talk) 19:48, 10 September 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Brenden Adams

There is an American teenager named Brenden Adams who is apparently on pace to become taller than Robert Wadlow. Even though he isn't yet one of the tallest people, I think it is definitely worth a mention in this article somewhere. He is at least the tallest 13 year old in medical history. :P
