Malia Ann Obama (born July 4, 1998 in Chicago, Illinois) is the elder daughter of the 44th U.S. President Barack Obama and First Lady Michelle Obama. Sister of Sasha Obama, the two are the youngest pair of children to live in the White House since John F. Kennedy, Jr., who arrived as an infant in 1961.[1]

Malia attends the private Sidwell Friends School in Washington, DC, the same school currently attended by the grandchildren of Vice President Joe Biden.[2] Both Obama girls began classes there on January 5, 2009.[3]

Early life

Malia was born in Chicago, Illinois, six years after parents Barack and Michelle were married. While living in Chicago, both children kept busy schedules, Malia played "soccer, dance and drama [...] piano and tennis."[4][5] During their father's term as Senator from Illinois, the family notably gave an interview to the television series Access Hollywood; Obama later said they regretted allowing the children to be included.[6]

Both daughters officially moved into the White House on January 20, 2009, along with both their parents and their grandmother, Marian Shields Robinson. Soon after, the family adopted a dog named Bo, who President Obama, in his victory speech on the night of his election promised his children.[7] However the selection of a dog was slow because Malia is allergic to animal dander;[8] the president subsequently said that the choice had been narrowed down to either a labradoodle or Portuguese Water Dog, and they hoped to find a shelter animal.[9] On April 12, 2009, it was reported that the Obamas had adopted a six-months old Portuguese water dog, who was named by both Malia and Sasha.[10]

Her 2009 birthday was covered by the press as the first birthday Malia has not spent in a hotel room since at least 2006. It will also be the family's first birthday with full access to the ushers, pastry chefs and other perks provided by the White House. [11]

Malia has started fashion trends as noted in the press. She "sparked a trend over the summer when she sported twists</ref> http://www.nydailynews.com/lifestyle/2009/09/16/2009-09-16_beyonce_tyra_banks_rihanna_give_cues_to.html</ref> She has also participated in international travel and diplomacy.[12] She wore a peace t-shirt during the G-8 conference of world leaders possibly sending a message.[13]</ref> [14] This was also reported by the Daily Mail, one of many international reports on the incident.
