History

The Rocks

The origins of Marist College Canberra are to be found at the Rocks in Sydney. There in 1875, only three years after the foundation of the first Marist school in Australia, the Brothers began a Select School or High School with Brother Augustine McDonald as its first Principal.

Darlinghurst

In 1887 the secondary school transferred to the eastern side of St Mary's Cathedral, since this was a more central location and provided more space. By 1910 however, the school premises were run down and this fact and other difficulties led the Marist Brothers to construct new buildings on the heights of Darlinghurst, and "The High School" as it was commonly known, transferred there. Both at the Cathedral and at Darlinghurst. By the 1960s, demographics threatened the future of the school at Darlinghurst, while at the same time Canberra was burgeoning and in need of Catholic schools. So the decision was taken to sell the property and to use the proceeds to transfer the school to Canberra.

Canberra

Marist Canberra began in 1968 with primary classes. By 1973 the main secondary building and gymnasium had been completed and the first Marist senior class to complete the full secondary course at the College graduated in 1975. Since that time, Marist Canberra has grown to be one of the largest schools in the ACT. The founder of the Marist schools was St. Marcellin Champagnat.

Houses

Background

The schools houses system was implemented in 1987 from a year group system. This was to provide greater care of students and further leadership opportunities. Each house developed their crest and motto which forged the houses Conway, Crispin, Darlinghurst, Mark, Othmar, Patrick. The following year, 1988, two further houses, Haydon and McMahon, were added to reduce house size.

Champagnat Cup

The Champagnat Cup was introduced by the graduating year of 2005. The cup is presented to the house that proves to have respectively won overall in array of house competitions. These competitions include athletic, swimming and cross country carnivals, academic performance, and walkathon collection totals.

Sexual abuse of students at Marist College Canberra

In February 2008, a teacher at Marist College Canberra, Marist Brother John William Chute (also known as Brother Kostka), pleaded guilty in the ACT Magistrates Court to 11 charges of indecently assaulting students of the college during the 1980s. [2] Seven further charges against Chute relating to alleged offences committed before 1985 were dropped, due to a legal limitation that charges relating to sexual indecency had to be made within a year.[3]. In June 2008, Chute was sentenced in the ACT Supreme Court to six years in jail, with two years to be served in prison, one year to be served in weekend detention, and three years suspended. [4]

In February 2008, a statement of civil claim was lodged against Marist College Canberra in the ACT Supreme Court by a number of former students. The claim alleges that students were sexually abused by five teachers over a thirty-year period, and seeks damages from the school for negligence.[5] In April 2009 the Marist Brothers denied a claim that a ring of pedophile abusers operated in the 1970s and 1980s.[6]

In July 2009, it was reported that 32 civil claims against the trustees of the Marist Brothers over the preceeding 18 month period in the ACT Supreme Court. Former students alleged they were molested by 10 former brothers and lay teachers while at the school. In some of the claims, former students allege they were molested by as many as four brothers and teachers. [7]
