Red Dawn is an upcoming 2010 war film being directed by Dan Bradley and written by Jeremy Passmore and Carl Ellsworth based on the 1984 film of the same name.[1] The remake stars Chris Hemsworth and Josh Peck as brothers Jed and Matt Eckert. The film is scheduled to be released on November 24, 2010. As opposed to a Soviet invasion of the United States homeland as depicted in the original 1984 film, this film's storyline will be based on a Chinese invasion[2][3].

Production

"The tone is going to be very intense, very much keeping in mind the post-9/11 world that we’re in. As ‘Red Dawn’ scared the heck out of people in 1984, we feel that the world is kind of already filled with a lot of paranoia and unease, so why not scare the hell out of people again?"

Carl Ellsworth, screenwriter[4]

Two top executives at MGM, Harry Sloan and Mary Parent, announced that a remake of Red Dawn is in the early stages of pre-production in May 2008 at the Festival de Cannes. This was announced along with a big-budget rebuild of RoboCop, which director Darren Aronofsky among others has recently been in to discuss. The remake of Red Dawn is slated to be directed by Dan Bradley, who has previously worked as a second unit director and stunt coordinator on films such as The Bourne Ultimatum, Spider-Man 3, Independence Day and Quantum of Solace. MGM has announced that Red Dawn will be remade "keeping in mind the post-9/11 world that we're in".[1][5] In a further announcement the same month, Dan Bradley has been confirmed as the director with Carl Ellsworth, screenwriter of Red Eye and Disturbia writing the updated screenplay.[1][6] Ellsworth will be working from a story written by Jeremy Passmore. Vincent Newman (A Man Apart) is also acting in a producer capacity.[7] Australian Chris Hemsworth has been cast in a lead role.[8]

Joining Hemsworth are Josh Peck of Drake and Josh and Adrianne Palicki for the film. Tony Gilroy, who wrote The Bourne Trilogy and Michael Clayton will do a rewrite of script. Kurt Russell is currently in talks to star in Red Dawn. Recently Josh Hutcherson and Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen's Isabel Lucas have been added to the cast. The day after, Edwin Hodge and Connor Cruise were cast, thus completing the Wolverines.[9] It was confirmed that the film will be shot in Michigan, and part of the movie would be shot in Detroit. Academy Award Winner, Kirk Francis has been tasked for the Sound Mixing.[citation needed] It currently has a release date of November 24, 2010.[10] It has also been confirmed that they are filming the remake in such the Michigan cities as Detroit, Mount Clemens, Troy, Royal Oak, Pontiac, and Grand Ledge. The new film's opening football scene, which did not appear in the original, was shot at the former Detroit Notre Dame High School in Harper Woods, Michigan. Watchmen and The Losers star Jeffrey Dean Morgan will star in the movie as Andrew Tanner. Near the end of September, Korean-American Die Another Day actor Will Yun Lee was cast to play Major Lo, the main Chinese Villain and counterpart of the original film's villain Russian Col. "The Hunter" Strelnikov. In October it was announced on the official movie website, that Avatar star Matt Gerald and Ken Choi would play as soldiers within Andrew Tanner's group. [citation needed]

During filming, it has been revealed that the film will feature propaganda pamphlets, posters and banners featuring People's Liberation Army symbols, such as the August 1 star, according to photographs taken during filming. The posters, which are designed to be satirical in nature, attempt to garner support for a Chinese occupation, with slogans such as "Rebuilding your reputation", "Repairing your economy", and "Fighting corporate corruption".[2][3]

Principal photography has begun as of September 2009 in Mount Clemens, Michigan.[11]
