Raymond Lam
Template:Infobox Chinese-language singer and actor Raymond Lam Fung (December 8th, 1979 – ), is an award-winning actor and singer based in Hong Kong. He is an actor under TVB and a singer under Emperor Entertainment Group (EEG)’s Music Plus label. He is well-known among Chinese populations across the world.
Acting Career
Raymond Lam attended 13th TVB artists training class in 1998 as an auditing student, and was offered a contract with TVB upon graduation in September, 1998.
In the early years, Raymond appeared as walk-ons in numerous series, and worked as a program host for the Mandarin channel under TVB: TVB8. It was not until year 2000 that Raymond was given opportunities to truly participate in series, and took on more important roles. He gradually gained audience attention after supporting roles in “A Taste of Love” and “A Step Into the Past”.
In 2002, Raymond was granted the chance to be the leading actor in “Eternal Happiness”. And in the following year, he received the Most Improved Actor award from TVB for his performance in “Survivor’s Law”. Henceforward, he has taken leading roles in numerous participating series, and became one of TVB’s most popular actors.
Raymond Lam has received many television awards in both Malaysia and mainland China; he held leading or supporting roles in many important series such as “Twin of Brothers” (First TVB ancient series fully filmed in mainland China with real scene shooting), “The Master of Tai Chi” (First Hong Kong series filmed in HD) and “The Drive of Life” (First series jointly produced by TVB and CCTV).
Since 2002, Raymond frequently entered the top 5 finalists in competition for TVB’s Best Actor award alongside many senior actors.
In 2006, Raymond Lam received his first best performing actor award in Malaysia at the 2005 Astro Wah Lai Toi TV Awards ceremony – Favourite Actor award for his character as Kou Chong in “Twin of Brothers”.
During TVB 40th Anniversary Awards in 2007, Raymond won Mainland’s Favorite Actor award with more than 54,000 votes. He also received Favorite Hong Kong TV Actor award from QQ Entertainment Awards from mainland China in the same year.
In year 2008, Raymond first won Favourite Male Character Award at TVB 41st Anniversary Awards for his role as Kam Wing Ho in “Moonlight Resonance”, and later won overseas acclaim for his performance as Tuen Hiu-Sing in “The Master of Tai Chi”, which earned him the Best Drama Performance award from Asian Television Awards 2008 held in Singapore. Raymond Lam is the first Hong Kong actor to be honored with this award.
Singing career
Aside from acting, Raymond Lam also sings series theme songs. In 2007, he signed with Emperor Entertainment Group (EEG) under its Music Plus label, and released his debut album: Fond of Searching for You in Memories on November 23rd, 2007. In just three weeks after the release of the album, more than 20,000 copies were sold. The album received IFPI Gold Disk Award, and became the top selling album for a newcomer of the year.
On September 10th, 2008, Raymond’s second album, Your Love, was released. A month after the release, the album scored an IFPI Platinum Award for reaching sales of more than 30,000 copies. Featured song – Love With No Regrets from “Moonlight Resonance” – won many music awards.
In 2009, Raymond’s singing career elevated even further. After 10 years in the entertainment industry, he was finally able to step on Hong Kong Coliseum for ‘Let’s Get Wet’ concert on June 17th and 18th, 2009. EEG and TVB both attached great importance to his concert and had billboard ad at the entrance of Cross Harbour Tunnel. Raymond fans across the world also showed full support to this concert. In memory of Raymond’s first concert held at the Hong Kong Coliseum, EEG released Raymond’s third album, Let’s Get Wet, on June 16th, 2009. Let’s Get Wet exceeded IFPI Platinum sales of 30,000 copies after 3 weeks of the release, the No. 1 featured song is the title track, as well as the concert theme song, Let’s Get Wet. Raymond is currently preparing his first Mandarin album, which is expected to be released at year-end or early next year.
Personal
Raymond Lam was born Wui Man Lam on December 8th, 1979, in Xiamen, China. He moved with family to Hong Kong when he was 2 years old.
Raymond attended Kiangsu & Chekiang School for primary education, and thus speaks Mandarin fluently. He studied at St. Paul’s College for middle and high school, and went to Xiamen University for its pre-exchange program in architecture. He later attended University of Southern California for a year, majoring in architecture, with music minor, and returned to Hong Kong when he was 18.
Raymond comes from a prominent family, and is the eldest of three children. He has a sister and a brother.
His father, Wah Kwok Lam (Hua Guo Lin), is a renowned property developer in Xiamen, known as ‘Ka-Shing Li of Xiamen’.
Raymond’s grandfather, Meng Fei Lin, has held important political posts such as Vice-chairman of Fu Jian Provincial Political Consultative Conference.
He is one-sixteenth Hispanic as his great grandmother is Spanish.
