I lived in Wisconsin during some of Les Aspins service in the House. It is my understanding that he served as an officer in the U. S. Navy during his military service period. There were reports in the local Milwaukee media ("Milwaukee Journal" or "Milwaukee Sentinel", now "Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel") that Aspin had claimed that during the entire period of his active military service he had never owned a uniform or worn one. If he had performed active service in the National Capitol Region as an officer that claim wouldn't have been too strange, as it's my understanding that there was (pre 9/11) a policy that serving military officers don't wear uniforms to work during peacetime conditions. Les Aspin spoke at my home when I was living in Waterford in 1970. He had been in the Army, not the Navy. Perhaps you are thinking of Henry Schadeburg or Lynn Stalbaum?

Shoplifting?

Someone added "arrested for shoplifting" to his bio. No source. I couldn't substantiate it so I deleted it.--Tbeatty 00:31, 29 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Good catch. Mackensen (talk) 18:58, 29 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks. Just lucky as I was looking up Mogadishu information. --Tbeatty 03:52, 30 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]
His predecessor subordinate, the Undersecretary and subsequently Acting Secretary of the Army John Shannon, was placed on administrative leave after being accused of shoplifting from a PX at Fort Myers. That may have something to do with this. Choess 19:15, 30 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]
I saw that in some google searches. I think it may be an honest mistake based on poor recollection. But it is disturbing that after the Siegenthaler thing, that an anonymous IP would be able to put in a sentence that would amount to defamation that lasted for 2 months (and numerous post edits). The only thing that is missing is that the press didn't use Wikipedia as a reference for the claim. And of course the fact that Aspin is dead.--Tbeatty 21:19, 30 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]
