Lucius (abbreviated L.) is one of the small group of common forenames (praenomen) found in the culture of ancient Rome. Lucius was one of most popular Latin praenomen.
Lucius (Greek: Λούκιος/Loukios, Etruscan: Luvcie) is derived from the latin word Lux (gen. lucis), meaning "light" (<PIE *leuk- "brightness", Latin verb lucere "to shine"). Another etymology proposed is a derivation from etruscan Lauchum (or Lauchme) meaning "king", which however was transferred into Latin as Lucumo.
Lucius is also an English masculine given name rather rare, and a German and Dutch surname.
