"I'm with You"
Song

"I'm With You" is a song written by Canadian singer Avril Lavigne and The Matrix (Scott Spock, Lauren Christy, Graham Edwards) for Lavigne's debut album, Let Go, and was Lavigne's first ballad released as a single. It was also released on KQMQ-FM.

It was released as the album's third single in 2002 and 2003 (see 2002 in music and 2003 in music). It reached number one in Mexico, number four on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100 (Lavigne's third single to reach the top ten), number seven in the United Kingdom, number thirteen in Canada, and number one on the Global song chart. "I'm With You" received radio and television airplay in Australia, but it was not officially released there.

The song was nominated for Song of the Year and Best Female Pop Vocal Performance at 2004 Grammy Awards.

Lavigne perform "I'm With You" on a number of tv shows including Saturday Night Live and The View (U.S. TV series).

This song has also been interpreted in polish by czech singer Ewa Farna under the title : "Tam gdzie ty" (Where you are).

Music video

The single's music video, directed by renowned photographer David LaChapelle, involves Lavigne, who is seen alone, trying to find someone. Avril is in a party, also in the video it shows Lavigne pushing a guy when he tries to get her to be with him. Most of the video is in slow motion but Lavigne's mouth movements are in sync with the song's vocals. This was achieved by recording the footage while the song was played twice as fast.

Much Music named the video one of the 'Top 100 Best videos of All time'.[2]

Reception

Critical reception

The arrangement of singles from Let Go, with "I'm With You" as the third, was regarded "controversial choices", given that "I'm With You" was "thought by some to be the biggest potential smash on the album", and could have established Lavigne as a more mature artist if it was released first. According to Reid, "Some people just really didn't get that. And with the first video, there was some concern that maybe because it's so young and so playful, it might alienate more serious music lovers."[3]

"I'm With You" was nominated for the 2004 Grammy Award for Song of the Year, and for Best Female Pop Vocal Performance but lost to Luther Vandross's "Dance with My Father" and Christina Aguilera's "Beautiful" respectively.

Commercial and chart performance

"I'm With You" became Lavigne's third top 10 song when it entered at #7 on Billboard Hot 100 chart dated January 25, 2003 during its eighth week on the chart.[4] The next week it surged to its peak position of #4, where it stayed for two consecutive weeks[5][6], before a brief drop to #6 in the next week during its eleventh week on the chart.[7] The song spent ten consecutive weeks on the top 10 and twenty seven weeks on the Hot 100.[8] "I'm With You" ranked at #18 on the Billboard Year-End Hot 100 singles of 2003.[9] The song was certified gold by Recording Industry Association of America on March 13, 2006 for sales of over 500,000 copies in the United States.[10] As a double-A-side DVD single, the "I'm With You"/"Sk8er Boi" video single was certified gold and platinum on May 15, 2003.[10] "I'm With You" is her longest staying song on this chart; only surpassed by her debut single "Complicated" which stayed on the chart for 31 weeks.[11] The song charted at #13 on Canadian Singles Chart.

In United Kingdom, the song was released on March 31, 2003. "I'm With You" debuted and peaked at #7 on the UK Singles Chart during the week ending of April 12, 2003,[12] being her third top ten single on the chart. The song experienced less staying power on the top 10 as it only stayed for two weeks compared to her previous singles such as "Complicated" and "Sk8er Boi" stayed on the top ten for five and three weeks, respectively. However, "I'm With You" slightly surpassed the longevity of the two previous singles on the top 75, being in the chart for 10 weeks. This would be her longest staying on the chart up until "Girlfriend" stayed on the chart for a big margin of 24 weeks in 2007.[13] "I'm With You" also charted high in Ireland, debuted at #6 and peaked at #5, being lodged in the top ten for six weeks.[14]

Elsewhere, the song gained more moderate success, reached top five in New Zealand; top ten in Belgium and Netherland; top twenty in Sweden, Switzerland, Austria, Germany, Norway and Denmark as well as reaching the top forty in France.[14]

In visual media

"I'm With You" was later featured in the season 3 Scrubs episode "My Tormented Mentor",[15] in the Smallville episode "Accelerate" and in the movie Bruce Almighty. The song was also used in the 2003 Brazilian soap opera Mulheres Apaixonadas.[16]

Furthermore it was featured in the video game Karaoke Revolution Volume 2.
