River Hill High School is a public high school in Clarksville, Maryland. It is part of the Howard County public school system. It is one of the two former Technology Magnet schools in Howard County, along with Long Reach High School.[1] It currently participates in the county-wide Career Academy initiative as a replacement to the magnet program.

River Hill High school is consistently recognized as a top-performing high school by various news publications. It garnered a "silver medal" by U.S. News and World Report.[2] It was recognized by BusinessWeek as having the "Best Overall Academic Performance" in all of Maryland.[3] It was ranked 295 out of 1500 high schools in 2009, which represent the top 6 percent of public high schools in the U.S., by Newsweek magazine.[4]

The school has not been immune to controversy. In 2005, a former teacher was arrested and convicted[5] on drug charges after teaching at the school for four years. Later, in 2007, a former teacher was arrested and convicted on assault[6] charges. Another recently arrested teacher is currently awaiting trial on the charges of running a child pornography ring described by local police as "disturbing and sickening".[7]

The school borders the boundaries of several other Howard County Schools in including Glenelg High School, Marriotts Ridge High School, Wilde Lake High School, Atholton High School, and Reservoir High School.[8]

Students

River Hill High School opened in 1996. It is one of the most prominent schools in the state. The school population peaked in 2002 with 1755 students, but has steadily decreased because several other high schools have opened in Howard County to ease the population strain on the existing schools. The school is known for strong academics with over 99% of the students passing the Maryland high school assessments.[9]
