For Colored Girls is an upcoming 2010 American film adaptation of Ntozake Shange's stage play For Colored Girls Who Have Considered Suicide When the Rainbow Is Enuf (1975). The film will be directed, produced, written by Tyler Perry.
Plot
Based on Ntozake Shange's award-winning 1975 play, which consists of a series of poems performed through a cast of nameless women, known only by a color. It deals with such subjects as love, abandonment, rape, and abortion.

Production
On September 3, 2009, Lionsgate announced it had acquired the distribution rights Tyler Perry's 34th Street Films adaptation of the play, with principal photography originally scheduled to take place in Atlanta, Georgia in November and December 2009, with a planned 2010 release.[1] The film will be written, directed, and produced by Perry. The cast includes Loretta Devine, Kimberly Elise, Whoopi Goldberg, Janet Jackson, Phylicia Rashad, Anika Noni Rose, Kerry Washington and Thandie Newton.[2] Mariah Carey had also been cast, but pulled out in May 2010, citing medical reasons; Thandie Newton has been cast to replace her absence. Macy Gray has also been cast.[3]
Originally titled For Colored Girls Who Have Considered Suicide When the Rainbow is Enuf the film's title was shortened to For Colored Girls in September, 2010.[4]
Release
The film was originally planned for a 2010 release, but later moved to January 14, 2011.[5] However, it was moved back to November 5th, 2010, with Tyler Perry commenting that it was "a serious film that really lends itself to the fall period."[6]
