This is a list of the characters featured on The CW's supernatural TV series The Vampire Diaries.

Main characters

Elena Gilbert

Elena is a seventeen year-old girl who lives in Mystic Falls, Virginia. She is the adopted daughter of Grayson Gilbert and Miranda Sommers Gilbert, and the older sister of Jeremy Gilbert. Her parents were killed in a car crash before the series started. Elena was in the car but survived because Stefan secretly saved her. Since then, she has been coping with their death, with her brother's addiction to drugs and her aunt Jenna's attempts to take care of her and Jeremy. She keeps a diary of everything that happens to her.

When she meets Stefan Salvatore she falls deeply in love with him. However, she soon starts to mistrust him due to his lies and to his past history with his brother Damon. When she learns that Stefan was in Mystic Falls in 1953, she confronts him and learns that he is a century-old vampire and that this is the reason why he is so estranged from Damon, who is also a vampire. Elena tells Stefan she can't be with him anymore, but she will keep his secret. After an intense evening (where Stefan stakes Vicki to save Elena and Jeremy), Elena confesses that after everything she can't change the way she feels about Stefan. After some dangerous occurences Elena sees how good Stefan is and that she is still in love with him, she tells him they can be together. He says its too dangerous, and must leave. In the mid-season finale Elena stops Stefan from leaving with the words, "Stefan I love you." They sleep together. She then finds out her resemblence to Katherine and leaves.

After some time, Elena discovers several secrets about herself: first, she is the spitting image of Katherine Pierce, the vampire both Salvatore brothers loved and who turned them; second, Stefan saved her from the car accident that killed her parents; and third, she was adopted by the Gilbert's. Her birth mother is revealed to be Isobel Flemming-Saltzman but she doesn't know who her father is. Later in the season, she learns that the man she believed to be her uncle, John Gilbert, (a man she despises) is actually her birth father, who dated Isobel when they were in high school. She later learns that Damon turned her mother into a vampire at her own request.

Elena eventually discovers that Damon is in love with her after Isobel reveals it, and while she only wants to be friends with him due to her feelings towards her boyfriend and Damon's brother Stefan, she still cares deeply about him, and her feelings are beginning to grow. She has an undeniable connection to him. He never lies to her and shows that his only chance at redemption is through being with Elena.

Katherine Pierce

Katherine is the young woman who both Damon and Stefan were in love with in 1864 Mystic Falls. She may have been from Atlanta, but she said this to Pearl in a joking way, so we don't know if it was a fake story so people wouldn't suspect her of being a vampire. She was involved with both brothers at the same time and when she was finally exposed as a vampire and taken away by the townspeople, it caused a rift in the brothers' relationship. After both brothers were killed, Stefan learned from Emily that Katherine had been compelling him to drink her blood for weeks, and that Damon had also drank her blood, though no compulsion was necessary in his case. After failing to find her in the tomb, Damon learned that Katherine never cared about him. In the Season 1 finale, it is revealed that Elena, who Damon kisses at the end of the episode, is actually Katherine, who apparently stabs John Gilbert after gaining access to the Gilbert house. In season two, she tells Damon that "she never loved him" and turns Caroline into a vampire.

Stefan Salvatore

Stefan is a vampire who was turned by Katherine in 1864, along with his brother Damon; because of this, they share a mutual hatred of one another. Returning to Mystic Falls, he discovers Elena, who is the spitting image of Katherine. Over time he forms a relationship with her because she looks like Katherine, though he soon discovers while she may look like Katherine, she is nothing like her and falls in love with her for it. He eventually reveals that he saved her from the car accident which killed her parents. He survives mainly on animal blood, but begins to crave human blood when Elena feeds him some of hers. Elena and Damon stage an intervention when he attacks one of the Miss Mystic Falls participants, Amber Bradley, and lock him in the basement dungeon, where he confesses to Elena that he should never have fed to complete his transition into a vampire. He is soon cured and returns back to normal.

In season two, he discovers Katherine is back and she declares she came back for him. After Katherine turns Caroline into a vampire, Stefan teaches her to control her blood lust. It is assumed that Stefan will take Caroline under his wing and teach her his ways of feeding on animals instead of humans.

Damon Salvatore

Damon Salvatore is Stefan Salvatore's older malevolent vampire brother. He's portrayed as a charming, handsome, hot, evil being who loves tricking humans and keeps feeding on them during the entire beginning of the first season. He was turned into a vampire by Katherine Pierce, a female vampire whom he fell in love when he was human in 1864 in Mystic Falls, Virginia. He came back to release Katherine from a tomb full of vampires, only to discover she escaped and never looked for him. He uses Elena's friend Caroline to feed on, and is almost killed when Stefan poisons her blood. He kills Stefan's football coach, his oldest friend, Lexi, and their 21st century descendant, Zach. Despite his outwardly evil manner, Elena always reminds him that there is something kind in him, and she brings out his best qualities. Isobel reveals that Damon is in love with Elena, and he makes no move to confirm or deny this. It is shown several times throughout the season Damon is capable of caring for others (Rescuing Elena from a car wreck, helping Stefan escape from being tortured, and teaming up with Stefan, Bonnie, and Elena to protect Mystic Falls.)

In season two, it was revealed that Katherine never did love him, it was always Stefan. Upset, a drunken Damon goes to Elena in her room. He tells Elena that he strongly believes that she loves him, then kisses her. Elena insists that she loves Stefan, and that it will always be Stefan, almost exactly what Katherine had previously told him, leaving Damon heartbroken. In an attempt to hurt Elena he snaps Jeremy's neck, resulting in Elena declaring her hatred for him. Despite this claim, she later saves his life from Bonnie, who takes her anger out on Damon after discovering that his blood enabled Caroline to become a vampire.

Jeremy Gilbert

Jeremy is an outsider at Mystic Falls High and the younger brother of Elena. He spent most of his time doing drugs with Vicki until Damon altered his memory on Elena's request when Vicki is turned into a vampire by Damon and later killed by Stefan. He meets a young girl, Anna, at the library who helps him write a history paper on vampires in Mystic Falls. They become close, although he is still searching for Vicki who, after some research, he suspects had been turned into a vampire. When Anna turns up at Jeremy's house, he cuts his hand and she begins to drink the blood, exposing her as a vampire. He repeatedly asks Anna to turn him so that he may be with Vicki, although she does not know this until later on. But when Vicki's body is found, Jeremy changes his mind; this upsets Anna, who was slowly falling in love with him and thought he wanted to be changed to be with her. Eventually Jeremy reads Elena's diary, discovering what really happened to Vicki, infuriating him. He confides in Anna, and the two become close again and begin an intimate relationship. He remains resentful of Elena for lying to him despite her attempts to reconcile, saying that she "lies about everything." After the death of her mother at the hands of Jeremy's uncle, Anna decided to leave Mystic Falls, presumably believing that she was next. She gave Jeremy a vial of her blood and told him if he dies with it in his system, he will become a vampire. He was unsure about whether he still wanted to turn, and Anna left, only to return shortly after on learning of an imminent vampire attack. She attempted to save Jeremy, unaware of the town's counter attack, and was dragged away to be burned alive in an old building after suffering the affects of "the device" and being injected with vervain. When she was killed by John Gilbert, Damon sought out Jeremy to tell him in an attempt to 'do the right thing,' claiming that he had wanted to help her but couldn't. Jeremy then drinks the vial of Anna's blood and overdoses on painkillers in hopes that his emotional pain will ease by doing so, and will turn into a vampire.

In the season 2 premiere his attempt to become a vampire fails because he didn't take enough pills to kill him and the vampire blood he drank was healing him. John later gives Jeremy his ring that protects him from dying which saves Jeremy's life when a distraught Damon snaps his neck in a fit of blind rage.

Jenna Sommers

Jenna is Elena and Jeremy's aunt, who takes them in after their parents were killed in the car crash. She used to date Logan Fell, who turned into a vampire by vampire Anna, but later killed by Alaric Saltzman. She begins a relationship with Alaric, Elena and Jeremy's history teacher.

Bonnie Bennett

Bonnie is Elena's best friend. She finds out that she is a very powerful witch, just like her grandmother, and is also a descendant of Emily (Katherine's witch servant, who entombed them under the church). Together, Bonnie and her grandmother lift Emily's spell from the tomb, releasing the 25 vampires. When her grandmother dies after from the strain of doing so, Bonnie leaves town. When she returns, she is distant with Elena. It is later revealed that this is because she blames Stefan and Damon for the death of her grandmother. Although from then on she develops a hatred for vampires, she uses a spell to save Stefan and Damon from a burning building knowing that if they died Elena would be heartbroken. She later warns Stefan that if Damon spills one more drop of innocent blood, she will kill him and Stefan too if he gets in her way.

Caroline Forbes

Caroline is a friend of Elena's and Bonnie's. She starts off being quite superficial and self centred. She initially falls for Damon under compulsion but is freed by Elena and Stefan when he attempts to kill her. She begins dating Matt Donovan, Elena's ex boyfriend, although she struggles with jealousy of Elena and Matt's history because Matt is still not over Elena. Over time, Caroline has learned to be more accepting and a kinder person. She tried to mend Matt & Tyler's friendship. Caroline is currently hospitalized in critical condition.

In season two, Caroline is given Damon's blood to help her heal; later, Katherine shows up and suffocates her with a pillow, causing her to (presumably) turn into a vampire since she had Damon's blood in her system at the time of her death. In the following episode, Caroline feeds on a bag of blood, completing the transformation. After she kills a young man by feeding on him, Damon tries to kill her, but Stefan stops him. Stefan then teaches Caroline how to fight the urge by controlling her blood lust, which she does to stop herself from feeding on Matt after he tells her he loves her.

Matt Donovan

Currently Caroline's boyfriend. Elena's ex-boyfriend and younger brother of Vicki. He previously had some feelings for Elena, but it is unknown whether or not those feelings remain, or if they have been wiped out due to his strong romantic feelings towards Caroline.Best friends with Tyler Lockwood but after an incident involving Matt's cougar mother, they aren't friends anymore but are showing signs of amending at the end of the Season Finale. But in season two we are hinted he wishes to become a vampire.

Tyler Lockwood

Tyler is a friend of Matt's and a rival of Jeremy's. He used to date Vicki before she was killed. It has not yet been made clear whether he is human, as he was affected by "the Device". EMTs arrive to revive him but upon looking in his eyes, they are startled to find them a golden yellow color. Being affected by the device revealed that he was another supernatural being.

Alaric Saltzman

Alaric is the history teacher at Mystic Falls High. Over time it is revealed that his wife's name was Isobel, the same as Elena's birth mother, and that she spent most of her time studying paranormal activities. She is presumed dead but Alaric learns from Damon that she has in fact been turned into a vampire by him after being sent by John Gilbert. He helps the Salvatore brothers on several occasions after it is revealed that the ring Isobel gave him before she disappeared helps him stay alive.

Vicki is the older sister of Matt Donovan,[1] and ex-girlfriend of Jeremy Gilbert and Tyler Lockwood. After being bitten by Damon several times he eventually turns her. She refuses to listen to Stefan's advice and seeks out human blood, thus completing her transformation. After turning up at a Halloween party (dressed as a vampire) she loses control and tries to bite Jeremy but attacks Elena, forcing Stefan to stake her. Later, her remains are found in the woods by Caroline.

Sheriff Elizabeth "Liz" Forbes is the Sheriff of Mystic Falls and the mother of Caroline Forbes. She is first introduced at a Founders Day party at Mayor Lockwood's house. There she is shown to have a strained relationship with her daughter. However, later actions show that Forbes loves her daughter very much and is willing to do anything for her.

She was revealed at the end of the episode to be a member of the Founders Council, a secret organization dedicated to protecting Mystic Falls from vampires. Along with Logan Fell, Forbes led the hunt for the vampires. When Fell was killed by Damon Salvatore, Forbes found the body and covered up his death by saying that he had left town for the Bahamas. Fell later returned as a vampire and swore to turn Caroline into a vampire to have his revenge against Forbes. She was saved by Damon Salvatore's intervention. Forbes appears in several other episodes protecting the town from vampire attacks and attending Founding Families events. When Damon approached the Council to get them off his back, he gives vervain to Forbes and frames Lexi as the vampire so as to make him look heroic in Forbes's eyes. She was seen letting him know about the Council's plans and was also his staunchest ally among the Founding Families, not suspecting that he is a vampire. In the episode founders day she is smacked across the head by John Gilbert as she said it was a bad idea to almost kill the founders families and he locks her to a desk with her own cuffs later to be found by Tyler Lockwood's mother.

Mayor Richard Lockwood

Daughter of Pearl and the maker of Ben and Logan. Annabelle "Anna" was a vampire who resided in Mystic Falls in 1864 and survived the townspeople's attempts to eradicate the vampires by burning them in an old church, but were instead locked in a tomb. She witnessed her mother's capture at the hands of Johnathan Gilbert and waited 145 years for the chance to free her. She, like the Salvator brothers, possessed an enchanted lapis lazuli ring which allowed her to walk in the sunlight. She starts a romantic relationship with Jeremy Gilbert despite her mother's protests, calling him her "weakness." The two suffered a brief falling-out after the discovery of Vicki Dovonan's body. When Pearl was killed by Jeremy's uncle John Gilbert in the episode "Blood Brothers", Anna was devastated but did not seek revenge. She attempted to save Jeremy from an impending vampire attack in the season one finale, but was rounded up with the other vampires after suffering the effects of The Device and was dragged to an old basement. There John Gilbert found and staked her. However, before she died she gave a vial of her own blood to Jeremy to enable him to become a vampire, which he drinks on learning of her death, believing his emotional pain will cease by turning.

Isobel Flemming-Saltzman

Elena's real birth mother. She is a vampire who was turned by Damon at her own request, and claims to be a messenger from Katherine. She was previously married to Alaric Saltzman, the history teacher at the high school, but claims that Elena's father is John Gilbert. Although Isobel tells Elena not to look for any redeeming qualities in her, she shows regret that Elena has been drawn in to the supernatural world and that Elena is involved with both Salvatore brothers.

Pearl

One of the tomb vampires revealed to be 400 years older than the Salvatore Brothers. She had fallen in love with Johnathan Gilbert the last time she was in town, but he betrayed her on learning what she was and assisted in her capture after a brief hesitation. The result was her being imprisoned in a tomb with the other vampires for over a century before finally being freed by her daughter Anna, who had fallen very deeply for Johnathan's descendant Jeremy Gilbert. Because of his relation to Johnathan, Pearl does not approve of Anna spending time with Jeremy. Unlike most of the other tomb vampires, she did not seem bear ill feelings toward the townspeople and tried unsuccessfully to steer the others away from attempting revenge, saying, "These people are not our enemies; we don't hold grudges and resentments." It is believed that she, along with Harper, was staked by John Gilbert, after telling John she gave The Device, an artifact extremely harmful to vampires, to Damon. Her death was a devastating blow to Anna, who had waited and worked for one hundred and forty-five years to rescue her. She was a close friend to Katherine Pierce, stating to Damon that they were best friends long before coming to Mystic Falls.

Harper

Harper was a soldier in the Union Army during the American Civil War. Left for dead on a battlefield, he is turned into a vampire by Pearl. In 1864, he was one of 27 vampires captured by the townspeople of Mystic Falls and trapped inside a burning Fell's Church. Unknown to the townspeople, Emily Bennett used witchcraft to entomb all the vampires underground. Harper remained in entombed for 145 years until Damon Salvatore convinced Emily's descendant, Sheila Bennett, to unseal the tomb. Damon was looking for his lost love, Katherine, but she was not there. Enraged, Damon threw a plastic bag filled with human blood he had brought for Katherine against the wall of the tomb. Harper, though still weak, drank the blood and gained enough strength to escape. He was discovered by a hiker who informed him of the year before being killed. He wandered into Mystic Falls and met Bethanne, another vampire from the tomb and he learned that all the vampires have gathered in Miss. Gibbons' farmhouse just outside Mystic Falls. While the majority are restless and resent Pearl's leadership, Harper remains steadfastly loyal to her and her commands. When the other vampires, lead by Frederick, go against Pearl's orders and torture Stefan Salvatore, Harper attempts to stop them, but fails. When Pearl decides to leave Mystic Falls, sensing it is too dangerous, Harper agrees to leave with her. Just as they have about to leave, John Gilbert stakes both of them.

Kelly Donovan

She is the mother of Matt and Vicki Donovan and a bad influence, a drunkard, and a cougar. She spent most of her time out of town with her boyfriend Pete, but returned to Mystic Falls when he broke up with her. Kelly was later kicked out by Matt in the episode "Under Control" when he caught her drunk making out with one of his high school friends (Tyler) despite her pleas, saying that he was better off without her. In a deleted scene she was shown to be a succubus when she extracted the life from a drunken bachelor outside of the Mystic Grill. However it is unknown as to whether this idea has been scrapped entirely (meaning Kelly would simply be a normal human), or whether it has just been preserved for future story arcs.

Jonathan "John" Gilbert

John Gilbert is Grayson Gilbert's younger brother. In their youth, his brother taught him about the vampires through the journals of their ancestor, Jonathan Gilbert. They also inherited a ring each that prevented them from being killed. John had a crush on Isobel Saltzman and he was the one who sent her to Damon Salvatore when she wanted to become a vampire. After her transformation, Isobel found John and they formed a partenship to get their hands on a mysterious invention created by Jonathan Gilbert.

John arrived in Mystic Falls for the Founder's Day and was shown as a member of the Founders' Council. However, he knew that Damon was a vampire, that there had been a tomb under the Fell's Church and he knew about Katherine. He tried to intimidate Damon into helping him find the invention but Damon threatened to kill him and everyone on the Council. Along with Alaric Saltzman, Damon discovered that John was keeping an eye on the vampires who had been in the tomb. Soon, he confronts Pearl about her possession of the invention but Pearl has already given it to Damon. When Isobel returns to town, John finally gets the invention at which time it is revealed that Isobel and John are working for Katherine and that they are planning to kill the tomb's vampires. Unofficially, their goal is to kill the Salvatore brothers and save Elena from suffering in a life filled with vampires. He was in addition responsible for staking his nephew Jeremy's girlfriend Anna, who was also a vampire. It is also revealed that John is Elena's biological father. He gets his fingers (one of the them with his ring on it) cut off and is stabbed by Katherine, who poses as Elena in order to gain access to the Gilbert house in the Season 1 finale.

In the season 2 premiere, John is rushed to hospital and is later threatened by Stefan to leave. He packs his bags but it has not been made clear whether he has actually left Mystic Falls or not. However, we do know that he gave his ring (which makes the wearer invulnerable to harm from supernatural forces) to Jeremy, as it once belonged to his brother - Jeremy's father, Grayson Gilbert.

Mason Lockwood

Mason Lockwood is Richard Lockwood's younger brother and Tyler's uncle. He is also a werewolf. Mason is described as Tyler's cool uncle. Mason is sexy, athletic and possesses an easygoing charm. There are rumors that he and Katherine have past.
