Origins

There are two etymologies of the name Ivo:

  • One derives from continental Celtic "IVO" meaning "YEW", one of the ancient Celts holy trees. This is used in German, Dutch and Ancient Germanic.[1]
  • One derives from the Slavic name Ivan.[1] This is used in Bulgarian, Macedonian, Croatian and can be found in the Balkan Peninsula, Romania, Italy and other neighboring regions.

Variations

In France, the variation of the name is Yves. In hispanic countries of Latin America, the name is commonly spelled Evo. The diminutive of Ivo in Croatian is Ivica. Ivo is a common Bulgarian given name, but is also a diminutive form of the more common Bulgarian given name of Ivaylo. In Bulgarian Ivo is thought to be a form of the name Ivan. Feminine equivalents of the name include Iva, Eva, and Yvette, amongst others. In Croatia, variation Ivan is one of the most popular names, and Ivica is popular in Croatia's Zagorje County. Ivo is also popular in Dalmatia.
