"And Then We Kiss"
Song

"And Then We Kiss" is a song by American recording artist Britney Spears. The song was written by Spears, Michael Taylor and Paul Barry, and produced by Mark Taylor and Junkie XL, for Spears' first remix album, B in the Mix: The Remixes. The song was released on October 31, 2005 by Jive Records as a promotional single from the album. The euro-trance pop song speaks about a kiss and the different sensations that a woman experiences, including trembling, crying and moaning. "And Then We Kiss" received mixed reviews from music critics, with some noticing its potential to be a radio or club hit, but also saying Spears vocals were cold and mechanical. The song failed to appear on any major charts. However, it peaked at number fifteen on Billboard Hot Dance Airplay.

Background

"And Then We Kiss" was written by Spears, Michael Taylor and Paul Barry,[1] produced by Mark Taylor and remixed by Junkie XL. All instruments, including guitar, bass guitar, synths and drums, were played by Junkie XL. Audio mastering was done by Chaz Harper at Battery Mastering.[2] The song was released as a promotional single from B in the Mix: The Remixes on October 31, 2005.[3] "And Then We Kiss" also served as the music for the ad campaign behind Spears' fragrance, Fantasy.[4] The song had previously been set to be included on a bonus disc of her 2005 DVD Britney & Kevin: Chaotic, but was left out for unknown reasons,[5] being later included in a remixed version on B in the Mix: The Remixes.[6] In an interview with About.com, Junkie XL talked about the remix production:

"What I wanted to do was turn [And Then We Kiss] into a 2006 version of Enjoy the Silence with really electronic chunky beats and nice melodic guitar lines. Besides the fact that [Britney]'s singing on it, it could be a track off my album because it's the same vibe. I'm really happy with the end result and so are they."[7]

Composition

"And Then We Kiss" is four minutes and twenty-eight seconds long. It contains influences of euro-trance, techno and usage of synthesizers.[6] The song blends dance-rock guitars and symphonic strings and closes with an orchestral overtone.[6][8] Its lyrics talk about a kiss and the different sensations that the protagonist experiences, including trembling, crying and moaning. At the beginning she sings the lines "Lying alone / touching my skin" which suggest that the whole song may actually be a fantasy.[6] The released version of the song is a remix, produced by Junkie XL.[2]

Reception

Chart performance

"And Then We Kiss" failed to appear on any major charts, since it wasn't officialy released as a single worldwide. However, on the week of February 25, 2006, the song debuted at number twenty-five on Billboard Hot Dance Airplay.[9] Later, after spending five weeks on the chart, it reached number fifteen on the week of March 25, 2006.[10] "And Then We Kiss" spent eleven weeks on the chart.[11]

Critical response

Jennifer Vineyard of MTV stated that the song "has the potential to be a radio or club hit — if Jive were actively promoting the album".[6] Barry Walters of Rolling Stone said the song "brings a simpatico blend of symphonic strings and dance-rock guitars."[8] While reviewing B in the Mix: The Remixes, Kurt Kirton of About.com said "And Then We Kiss" and other remixes of songs like "Toxic" and "Someday (I Will Understand)" "hold their own,"[12] while a review by Yahoo! Shopping considered the song "dreamy".[13] Gregg Shapiro of the Bay Area Reporter gave the song a negative review, saying, "the many flaws in Spears' reedy, cold and mechanical voice are brought to the forefront in [the song]."[14]
