DYK for Dinanath Gopal Tendulkar

Merger proposal AJ John Memorial High School -> Kavilumpara

2010 is not over

Since 2010 is not over, plz do not put any data of 2010 on, because it is PROJECTED, it is not real. It is childish to make it LOOKS better.

It is YOU to change 2009 data back to 2010

You are the one who is making an unsourced data of 2010 I am the one who is changing the data back to 2009 watch carefully. So stop changing the data back to 2010, since there is no real 2010 data comes out, it is all PROJECTED.

Took a look. and right now can't think of anything more to add :-). Will look again next book (busy IRL :-))--Sodabottle (talk) 04:12, 4 March 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Have you heard this before? --CarTick (talk) 18:12, 10 March 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Yes. has happened in my family before (last one i know of was in 1960s and the perpetrators themselves are dead now. so i can safely say that. Have listened to one of them casually admitting it). Started out as sort of an actual euthanasia practice - when all movement ceases and person is practically brain dead. But now it is being done to get rid off oldies for their property.--Sodabottle (talk) 18:25, 10 March 2011 (UTC)[reply]
wow. how ignoant i am. never heard of it. i will do more research on it. looks like the article need more context and expansion. --CarTick (talk) 18:29, 10 March 2011 (UTC)[reply]
My maternal grandmother used to joke about this when she was dying (this was in 2009) - she would say "innum nallathanda irukken, thalaikoothiraadheenga". Deathbed humour :-)--Sodabottle (talk) 18:36, 10 March 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Seriously? Drinking lots of coconut water can kill you? who knew! --rgpk (comment) 18:43, 10 March 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Its a combination of things overloading the victim's body - a sort sof system shock. For the old and infirm, when they have already reached the "no solid food" stage, the oil bath (usually done in the early hours) lowers the body temperature, slows down metabolism and heart rate. The kidneys are already overloaded, so now they pump liquids (i have heard of milk being used too) to induce renal failure. I have also heard of morphine overdosing by hacks who get paid to do this sort of thing.--Sodabottle (talk) 18:47, 10 March 2011 (UTC)[reply]
it is amazing. what is legal and illegal in India doesnt or doesnt seem to mean a lot. that is what was going through my mind when i wrote the recent article on Euthanasia in India. --CarTick (talk) 19:02, 10 March 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Well, I'd better keep an eye on what my kids hand to me when I'm old and weary! --rgpk (comment) 19:05, 10 March 2011 (UTC)[reply]
oh i forgot to add: there is a comedy sequence in Emmtan-Magan (2006), where Vadivelu's father -played by Ennatha Kannayya - is sort of thalaikoothified. (no oil baths, just milk i think). The fact that it is actually being used as comedy material (and is actually pretty funny) in 2006 shows how socially accepted this practice is --Sodabottle (talk) 19:12, 10 March 2011 (UTC)[reply]
havent seen the movie. but, concur with the idea. --CarTick (talk) 21:03, 10 March 2011 (UTC)[reply]

90000 Tamil words donated to Tamil wikipedia

Are you aware how the above worked out?Yogesh Khandke (talk) 16:42, 11 March 2011 (UTC)[reply]

It was for the Tamil wiktionary. It was a straight forward donation - there was an existing dictionary, we asked it to be released to PD and they agreed. They handed over a CD with the content, it was uploaded with a bot. Is there anything specific you want to know about this?--Sodabottle (talk) 16:48, 11 March 2011 (UTC)[reply]
I am trying to do the same thing for Marathi, would you share the correspondence with a Marathi/English translation?Yogesh Khandke (talk) 17:07, 11 March 2011 (UTC)[reply]
I dont think there was a formal correspondence/appeal for this particular donation. It was more like some Ta. wikipedians knew people in the Govt/ university and put out feelers. And when we we approached the TN Govt for a Wikipedia essay contest as part of the World Classical Tamil Conference 2010, they said ok for this too. But i have done the same process again formally for getting a similar donation from the Norwegian education ministry for the words in their Norsk-Tamil dictionary. It was done through email and they are still considering the request. I will forward my correspondence with the Norge educational ministry. --Sodabottle (talk) 17:23, 11 March 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Greatjob done Bala. Let your service to our Thamizh continue and wishing you to reach newer heights. Wasifwasif (talk) 10:13, 15 March 2011 (UTC)[reply]
What does donation mean? Did they transfer the copyright of the work to Wikipedia? Such actions need a Government Resolution. Do you have a copy of that GR, will you share it with me?Yogesh Khandke (talk) 17:37, 11 March 2011 (UTC)[reply]
In this case it was the university that was the copyright holder and not the govt. Thus no GO reqd. It is a decision taken by the university. And no they did not "transfer the copyright" - they let us reprint the information with CC SA 3.0 and GFDL wiktionary uses. I dont have the official correspondence - it happened offline mostly and i wasnt involved in the effort.--Sodabottle (talk) 17:48, 11 March 2011 (UTC)[reply]
They let us reprint must have been written expressed consent, may I have a copy of that?Yogesh Khandke (talk) 18:08, 11 March 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Not with me. I will ask people involved in the process--Sodabottle (talk) 18:10, 11 March 2011 (UTC)[reply]
It would be easy for the Maharashtra government to follow a precedent, so a copy of the correspondence would be a great help, I will compensate costs involved, in photocopying and mailing. Thanks again. Please send me a message on my talk page when you have the correspondence.Yogesh Khandke (talk) 18:15, 11 March 2011 (UTC)[reply]

AAI Data

I agree with you. Can Reinstate time period, if major changes occurs whenever AAI data out. But my question is past 3yrs data remains same. No major changes. Thats why.

--Bijuts (talk) 10:01, 15 March 2011 (UTC)[reply]

The following datapoints are available:

Data from April 2006 to March 2008 : http://www.aai.aero/traffic_news/mar2k8annex3.pdf Data from April 2007 to March 2009 : http://www.aai.aero/traffic_news/mar2k9annex3.pdf Data from April 2009 to October 2009 : http://www.aai.aero/traffic_news/oct2k9annex3.pdf Data from April 2010 to December 2010 : http://www.aai.aero/traffic_news/dec2k10annex3.pdf

You can see that data for Nov 2009 to March 2010, ie of five months is missing, out of 58 months total period . You can see that throughout the available data. That is good enough reference for the ranking, without the qualifier of time period. I suggest to remove the time period qualifier from the ranking (Or insert the precise period qualifier)

--Bijuts (talk) 10:07, 15 March 2011 (UTC)[reply]

IMO it doesn't matter the ranking has stayed stable over the past three years - people are still doing the wrong time period comparison and arriving at wrong conclusions (especially when they want to project their favourite airports ahead of others). So my opinion is let the time period stay, but i am not averse to mentioning a longer time period - but do that uniformly across all articles)--Sodabottle (talk) 10:14, 15 March 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Marking articles students are working on

Howdy, Online Ambassador!

This is a quick message to all the ambassadors about marking and tracking which articles students are working on. For the classes working with the ambassador program, please look over any articles being worked on by students (in particular, any ones you are mentoring, but others who don't have mentors as well) and do these things:

  1. Add {{WAP assignment | term = Spring 2011 }} to the articles' talk pages. (The other parameters of the {{WAP assignment}} template are helpful, so please add them as well, but the term = Spring 2011 one is most important.)
  2. If the article is related to United States public policy, make sure the article the WikiProject banner is on the talk page: {{WikiProject United States Public Policy}}
  3. Add Category:Article Feedback Pilot (a hidden category) to the article itself. The second phase of the Article Feedback Tool project has started, and this time we're trying to include all of the articles students are working on. Please test out the Article Feedback Tool, as well. The new version just deployed, so any bug reports or feedback will be appreciated by the tech team working on it.

And of course, don't forget to check in on the students, give them constructive feedback, praise them for positive contributions, award them {{The WikiPen}} if they are doing excellent work, and so on. And if you haven't done so, make sure any students you are mentoring are listed on your mentor profile.

Thanks! --Sage Ross - Online Facilitator, Wikimedia Foundation (talk) 18:14, 15 March 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks! :-)

Got a message about an hour ago from Professor Obar of the Media and Telecommunication Policy project and I think it is viewed best in full:

Can you please communicate to the online mentors that I DO NOT want them moving student material into the main space for them. This is a big problem. I have noticed that this has happened with a number of the projects already, for example, in the broadband.gov article and the media cross-ownership article. We need the students to be doing this on their own, of course so they can learn how to do it, and also so that I can grade what they've done. How am I supposed to follow student submissions if the data is associated with online mentors? A BIG PROBLEM ALREADY... please help me with this. None of you responded to my post about this on the discussion page. This is about to get out of hand. Jaobar (talk) 05:27, 20 March 2011 (UTC)

With that, of course, please only give instructions on how to move, don't do it for them. Please only let them know what to do and let them do it themselves. If they run into problems, provide further instructions. Do not it for them. This seems to be making a mess of Prof. Obar's grading system and I would like to avoid that. Thanks. - NeutralhomerTalkCoor. Online Amb'dor06:13, 20 March 2011 (UTC)[reply]

mentor

Hello,

My name is Nira Pandya and I am a student at Syracuse University, New York. I am currently editing articles for a class that I am enrolled in and I found that it would be very helpful if I can pick you as a mentor. I came for a study abroad program to India for 6 months last year and I was an intern for an NGO, ActionAid, and hope to edit the ActionAid article. ActionAid has a lot of presence in India in the NGO sector and I have found some scholarly articles that I can use to reference my work - I will also be giving examples of ActionAid India more specifically. Thank you and please let me know if you'd be able to help with any questions I may have or review my work as I am a new Wikipedian. Thank you!

citing a word document

I could use some help on how to cite a FCC document for the wiki page FCC regulations on children’s programming. I been playing with it in my sandbox but could not figure it out. Heres the article, http://hraunfoss.fcc.gov/edocs_public/attachmatch/FCC-07-50A1.doc Schmeic4 (talk) 15:40, 24 March 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Image on ta.wiki

[1] is likely a copyvio. I couldn't find the cc-by release on kollywoodtoday and only a standard copyright notice. Maybe more, these images are now being transferred to en.wiki/Commons so I noticed. cheers —SpacemanSpiff 20:46, 25 March 2011 (UTC)[reply]

I believe some years back, ta wiki admin Terrance obtained permission from kollywood today through email for a CC release. There is an OTRS ticket mentioned in the ta wiki image [2]. Can you check this ticket and see if this is valid? (or point me to someone with OTRS access and i will go and ask them)--Sodabottle (talk) 20:49, 25 March 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Nevermind, i found one indic otrs volunteer familiar with this - sreejith. i will ask him to verify the ticket.--Sodabottle (talk) 20:51, 25 March 2011 (UTC)[reply]
I'm not an OTRS volunteer so I can't see that, but unless there's a ticket no, it can't really be taken as verified -- I've run into this problem with so many actor/actress images here and on commons over the past year. In this case I saw that the uploader added the OTRS tag on ta.wiki, but nothing to verify it. If there is an OTRS ticket for kollywood today then it should state which images are covered (kinda like what the IndiaFM/Bollywood Hungama release is like) since many of the images on Kollywoodtoday aren't theirs to give. cheers. —SpacemanSpiff 20:57, 25 March 2011 (UTC)[reply]
There is a ticket no and Terrance is usually very knowledgeable/conscientious about our copyright practices. He is currently on a long wikibreak so cant ask him directly. I have asked Sreejith to verify the ticket and see what exactly it covers.--Sodabottle (talk) 21:03, 25 March 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Where's the ticket no? The reason I came to you was because I couldn't find one on the tag and I still can't seem to find it...if there's a ticket no, I wouldn't have had any cause for concern.... :( —SpacemanSpiff 21:09, 25 March 2011 (UTC)[reply]
1139159. It isnt mentioned in the tag, but the url to the ticket is mentioned, i got it from there.--Sodabottle (talk) 21:11, 25 March 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Ok, now I see it, thanks. I've cancelled the deletion requests for the derivative images as it has an OTRS ticket. But maybe you should modify the ta.wiki tags to expose the tickets like we have on en.wiki/Commons, I only looked at the OTRS link which took you to meta :) cheers. —SpacemanSpiff 21:17, 25 March 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Done. i have modified the relevant template to show the ticket ID explicitly.--Sodabottle (talk) 21:23, 25 March 2011 (UTC)[reply]

The OTRS ticket is valid. I just verified it now and modified the image page accordingly. --Sreejith K (talk) 17:56, 26 March 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Speedy deletion declined: New Erode

Hello Sodabottle, and thanks for patrolling new pages! I am just letting you know that I declined the speedy deletion of New Erode, a page you tagged for speedy deletion, because of the following concern: Previously marked as A7 and PROD but considering length of time this has been around CSD G3 does not seem to apply as if this is a hoax it is a subtle one. You may wish to review the Criteria for Speedy Deletion before tagging further pages. Thank you. (talk) 15:49, 26 March 2011 (UTC)[reply]

A "subtle hoax". Sigh!. This is one of the times that makes me wonder why i bother with cleaning up wikipedia. Now i have to put this through an AfD!!!. --Sodabottle (talk) 15:58, 26 March 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Airport Rankings

Hi Sodabottle, per your suggestion, DileepKS69 and Bijuts have increased the time period. I in a way do not agree with changing the time period because, only since the opening of T3, Delhi airport has become the busiest in the country (this happened around Oct 2010 and the period we mentioned earlier, ie, Apr-Nov 2010 includes this). Previously, DEL was second only to BOM. So we have to regularise the time period in all airports and rank them within that period. What say? Abhishek Talk to me 04:05, 29 March 2011 (UTC)[reply]

hmm. This is tricky. I would suggest, regularise the time period for all airports, but in case of delhi and bombay - where rankings have changed recently, mention both timeperiods and positions (i know its messy, but its better to include both)--Sodabottle (talk) 04:26, 29 March 2011 (UTC)[reply]

I suggest to keep the word "For the period of Apr–Nov 2010, it was the" only to DEL and BOM airports. --Bijuts (talk) 07:02, 29 March 2011 (UTC)[reply]

(talk page stalker) I think the recent rankings have to be included, as its exclusion will mean that a wrong image is being sent out. The timeperiods, should be mentioned properly. Yes Michael?Talk 07:44, 29 March 2011 (UTC)[reply]

I disagree with Bijuts. We have to mention the same time periods for all the airports. COK may be an exception as its ranking hasn't changed over the last four years. But it's best to regularise the time period for all the airports. Abhishek Talk to me 18:14, 29 March 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Not only COK, but also HYD, MAA, BNGLR,CCU not changed over the last four years. Changes happening only on DEL and BOM airports. --Bijuts (talk) 04:28, 30 March 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Addition of non-English titles to article

Is this title addition in Punjabi alright? Thanks, Abhishek Talk to me 11:10, 3 April 2011 (UTC)[reply]

native script addition is done under two conditions - for transliteration purposes in the official language of the area, and if a substantial number of people in the area speak that language. Is punjabi a major language in Delhi?. if so, the addition is fine, if not it should be removed.--Sodabottle (talk) 13:07, 3 April 2011 (UTC)[reply]
I do not know if Punjabi is a major language there. Abhishek Talk to me 15:41, 3 April 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Hi

Okay, I will keep this in mind and usually from now onwards will either enter everything within quotes or change the language/words. Moreover, the point that I stated was what I believed was a universal fact and general public-opinion as mentioned everywhere in media and, thus, I didn't mention any reference/source specifically but if you insist I will try to do so from now on. Thanks for bringing these points to my attention. Regards--Bugnot (talk) 05:08, 4 April 2011 (UTC)[reply]
