The NAB AFL Rising Star award is given annually to a standout young player in the Australian Football League. Since 2007 the winner has been presented with the Ron Evans Medal and was first awarded in 1993.[1] It was previously known as the Norwich Rising Star award.[citation needed]

Eligibility and nominations

Every round, an Australian Football League rising star nomination is given to a standout young player. To be eligible to be nominated for the award, a player must be younger than 21 years of age on January 1 of the award year and have played 10 or fewer senior games before the beginning of the season. A player who is suspended[notes 1] during the season is not eligible to win the award, however is still eligible for nomination.[2]

At the end of the season, nine AFL personalities (typically administrators and All-Australian team selectors) vote for five of the twenty-two nominees, with their top selections earning five votes, their second selection earning four votes, etc. The player who receives the most votes is the winner.

Notes

  1. ^ Technically, a player is ineligible if he is given a base sanction of 100 or more demerit points by the tribunal or match review panel, equivalent to a one week suspension. Under some circumstances, a player may reduce a penalty from a one week suspension (125 demerit points) to a reprimand without suspension (92.75 points) by accepting a 25% reduction with an early guilty plea; as the base points sanction in this case exceeds 100, he would become ineligible for the award, despite not being suspended. This is the same eligibility criterion used in the Brownlow Medal.
