Serbian Orthodox Secondary School Kantakuzina Katarina Branković (hrv:Srpska pravoslavna opća gimnazija Kantakuzina Katarina Branković/srp:Српска православна општа гимназија Кантакузина Катарина Бранковић) is a gymnasium in Zagreb, Croatia.

The school was started in 2005, continuing the tradition of the Orthodox minority education in the city, several hundred years long[2]. Teaching in school is carried out in the Serbian and/or Croatian languages. The students through four years of education study the following subjects: Serbian, Croatian, English, German, Latin, Church Slavonic, history, geography, politics and economy, music, art history, the Orthodox religion, sociology, psychology, chemistry, physics, biology, mathematics, physical education, ecology, informatics and philosophy (all courses are required).

Students have free education at SPOG [3]. The Serbian Orthodox Church in Croatia covers all costs of schooling for all accepted students. School is currently attended by the students from Croatia, Serbia, Bosnia and Herzegovina and Moldova (In total over 30 Cities and Municipalities at one high school), and a school is open to anyone who meets the enrollment criteria, regardless of religious, ethnic or any other commitment. Upon graduation, students can continue their studies anywhere where diplomas from Croatia are accepted (the school is accredited by the Croatian Ministry of Education). The school is also recognized in other countries in the region. SPOG students are studying now in Croatia, Serbia, Bosnia and Russia [4]. Professorial staff is composed mostly of young professionals [5] [6] [7] [8] [9], big part of them gained part of their education or carier at the most prestigious universities in Russia, the U.S., UK, Europe and region such as Bard College, Moscow State University, University of the Western Cape, University of Gothenburg, Universitetet i tromsø , Ljubljana University, Belgrade University, Zagreb University, University Josip Juraj Strossmayer.

Overview

Located in a beautiful and safe downtown Zagreb (Croatia), Serbian Orthodox Secondary School "Kantakuzina Katarina Branković" (SPOG) is small high shool which offers idividual attention that only small school can provide. All Zagreb city attractions are within walking distance of the school, and there is nothing in Zagreb that is not accessible by bus (city transport is free for SPOG student). SPOG is recognized as one of the top high school in Zagreb and Croatia. This mean that you can expect a team of professors with both academic and real-world experience. Every year SPOG ernolls approximately 20 students. They learn together, build friendships, share interests and at the end of high school they are fully prepared for continued education.

Student Activities

SPOG offer variety of extracurricular activities including film group, discussion grup, theater, choir, sport club, student council, group for languages, group for history... Dorms also have a large number of additional activities that are mostly free. Students are encouraged to take participation in variety of activities that offer to them Zagreb city (acting, painting, sports, theater, lectures ...). Every year for students SPOG organize visits to prospective faculties in Zagreb, free visit to film festivals, fairs, exhibitions, concerts, and free annual study trips to Croatia, or region.

Prospective students

SPOG students must to know the Serbo-Croatian language. Serbo-Croatian language courses are available in all major cities in the region and some of them are in these references [10][11][12] [13][14](acceptable knowledge of any version-Serbian/Croatian/Montenegrin/Bosnian). The candidate is also expected to have a good knowledge from elementary school. Prospective student can contact school office in the Serbo-Croatian and English (somewhat German and Russian is also acceptable if you do not know English). Students should contact school office as early as possible since the number of accepted students is limited, and also because they would have kept enough time to carry out all preparatory work.

Diversity

Although SPOG community is numerically small It consists of an interesting mix of people. SPOG students come from all parts of Croatia and countries in region (Zagreb, Belgrade, Adriatic coast, Pannonia, Dinarides,Bosnia). SPOG professor body in one big mix, and have professors from other non-orthodox religious school in Zagreb or some public schools. Several of our professors also work at Zagreb University at faculties of Art, South Slavic Studies and Slavic Studies. Although school fosters Orthodox spirituality and tradition, at the same time firmly believes in multiculturalism, multi-religiousness and power of wise dialogue [15].

The school has well equipped library, rented sport hall, laboratory, computer cabinet, multimedia cabinet, SPOG also paid membership for public swimming pools, ice rink, all 40 city library and church library.
