The Voice (franchise)
The Voice is a multinational television talent show franchise. It is a singing competition, held in various countries, which pits contestants against each other. These contestants are aspiring pop singers drawn from public auditions. The series is created and licensed internationally by Dutch-based Talpa Media Group. The format was launched on RTL 4 in 2010 in the Netherlands as The Voice of Holland. The franchise has signed a global recording and artist services agreement with Universal Music Group.[1]
The American television network NBC began airing a similar series in the United States entitled The Voice in April 2011, with the winner set to receive $100,000 and a record deal with Universal Republic. NBC partnered with originators John de Mol, Mark Burnett and Warner Horizon Television[2] to bring format of "The Voice of Holland" to America. Castings were held in major American cities (Chicago, New York, Miami, Nashville, Minneapolis, Austin, Los Angeles and Seattle.[2] Online applications were also allowed.[3] and ended on 1 March 2011. This version will be broadcast to the U.S. as well as Canada on CTV.
Belgium will start airing their own version of the show in 2012. It will be broadcast on vtm,[4] the main commercial television station in Flanders, Belgium and entitled De stem van Vlaanderen (The Voice of Flanders).
French production company Shine France has bought the format and the large national television chains, including TF1 and M6 expressed interest. TF1 won eventually and the format will be used for new Star Academy to be aired in 2012.[5]
Nelonen and Solar Television Oy have bought the rights to "The Voice of..." format for Finland.[6] The series will premiere in 2012, but no further information has been given.
Talpa and Miditech announced they were working together to produce an Indian version the format. [7] No official announcement on a channel or debut date has been made.
In Australia, Nine will begin airing their localized version of The Voice come this fall. [8]
