Nice graph

I like your graph of the Hillsboro population trends. It's much easier to understand the curve than to interpret the list of numbers. Nice job. Finetooth (talk) 16:52, 23 March 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks! I've made a few more before. My Gresham one is almost ready. --Jsayre64 (talk) 16:54, 23 March 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Indeed, they are an improvement. Unfortunately they are hard to modify and expand in the future. You might consider using something like Template:Bar graph to generate them. tedder (talk) 17:12, 23 March 2011 (UTC)[reply]
I don't think a bar graph would be best; line graphs are usually used when the x variable is time. And there's a census every ten years. It doesn't take too long to update the graph and re-upload it. --Jsayre64 (talk) 17:15, 23 March 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Yeah, I understand. Especially since the 2010 data is available, it's less of an issue- and I agree, a line graph is much better. Still, it's less editable. BTW, line graphs aren't used just because x=time; y must also be related values- so population works because 2000 is related to 1990 and 2010; something like the per-season win stats of the Trailblazers is poor, since one season's results are not tied to the next or previous season. tedder (talk) 17:18, 23 March 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Well, I think it depends why you're measuring the y-variable, yes, and a line graph would be awkward for how many wins the Trailblazers get each season, unless you're looking for how they improve or get worse. But if you think about population growth, it's indeed a line graph that comes to your mind first. --Jsayre64 (talk) 17:26, 23 March 2011 (UTC)[reply]
I totally agree population is a line graph. Unfortunately there's no SVG or template way to do line graphs. Anyhow, it's one of my rants when watching competition reality TV when a person/individual says "I'm on a roll! We're gaining momentum!" when each competition is completely unrelated to the previous competitions. Okay, I'll step off my soapbox now. tedder (talk) 17:29, 23 March 2011 (UTC)[reply]
I have a problem with the graphs. First, although I like Pete and you seem to be a fine editor, two editors do not make a consensus. This needs a wider vetting. Problems I see: I believe graphs may be a problem with accessibility; Graphs are notoriously easy to manipulate - as in Y axis can make it appear that growth is more or less rapid than it actually is; does not allow for updates between Censuses which happen yearly; there is a whole Cities WikiProject that have standards usually used in the assessment process. I don't know what an actual consensus will determine, but this needs to be examined on a wider scale. Maybe we have both the chart and the graph, but the discussion needs to occur. Aboutmovies (talk) 06:25, 24 March 2011 (UTC)[reply]
That's fine. Pete expected something like this. Should I give word at WT:ORE so we can establish consensus? --Jsayre64 (talk) 08:38, 24 March 2011 (UTC)[reply]
I think the Cities WP is probably a better forum and more likely to get more feedback on this topic. Aboutmovies (talk) 00:33, 25 March 2011 (UTC)[reply]

OK, I've asked the city people. Jsayre64 (talk) 13:18, 26 March 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Hello

Hi JSayer,

We'd like to use your Willamette Valley image (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Willamette_Valley_fog.JPG) on our website PureRainUSA.com that we are developing and we'd like to reference you as who took the picture...Do we have your permission and if so, how would you like us to reference your wonderful work?

Hi there, do you think you could do me a favor and move File:Brightwood.jpg to Commons? I created a cat here earlier. It might help clear up some confusion about my edits to the Brightwood article with the photographer. Thanks! Valfontis (talk) 19:23, 31 March 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Done No problem. Whenever you need to move one to Commons, you can add {{Copy to Wikimedia Commons}} and it will give you a link to the CommonsHelper tool. Jsayre64 (talk) 14:37, 1 April 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Hey

I just wanted to tell you that some of your pictures are very pretty.  jorgenev (talk) 07:57, 3 April 2011

Thanks! I'm glad they are appreciated. Jsayre64 (talk) 15:23, 3 April 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Triple Crown

Hello, I have reverted your additions to the WikiProject TC. You are supposed to nominate these first at WP:CROWN/NOM, and not add them directly. Please read the instructions there. Cheers. – SMasters (talk) 05:41, 9 April 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Just FYI, your reversion of the edit made by the IP editor to this article was good, but you then reverted yourself, restoring the IP's vandalism. Try to make it a habit to look at the article once you've finished editing it, as it's easy to get confused about where you are in the process. (I know, it's happened to me.) Best, Beyond My Ken (talk) 23:20, 13 April 2011 (UTC)[reply]

I must admit I was confused. After I reverted the first time, I noticed that the IP had merely changed the information, so I reverted the revert. If you're sure it's vandalism, then whatever. I'll be sure to take a closer look next time. Thanks. Jsayre64 (talk) 02:43, 14 April 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Edit summaries

You're right, sorry. I'm just frustrated at how quickly people ran around to all the nuclear articles and slapped up comments comparing Fukushima to Chernobyl when the difference is so blatant. Still, "fear" with a ton of exclamation points does scream of vandalism, which it isn't. It was that, or make the caption "Chernobyl exploded and sent radioactive material flaming into the night. If a bunch of stupid babies in Japan with a pair of leaky BWRs is a 7, then this apocalypse is a level 50". But then you would RVV me for sure :). Anyway, it was all in good faith, truly, and it won't happen again. Cheers. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 72.144.246.37 (talk) 01:52, 17 April 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Collapsibe list

Hi, I wasn't sure from your response at the village pump whether you meant you were going to use the collapsible list option or not, but I templated them to help out just in case: {{le top}}, {{le mid}} and {{le end}}. Cheers, — Bility (talk) 02:36, 20 April 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Awesome! I was just wondering how to create a template with the code. Jsayre64 (talk) 02:38, 20 April 2011 (UTC)[reply]
No problem, just let me know if anything goes wrong with the templates or you need help setting up the lists. . — Bility (talk) 02:49, 20 April 2011 (UTC)[reply]
I think I understand them. Jsayre64 (talk) 02:52, 20 April 2011 (UTC)[reply]

WPORE COTW 2.0 - the picture edition

Greetings one and all. For some of you, this will be your first time receiving one of these messages, as it has been a year since the WikiProject Oregon Collaboration of the Week (COTW) was a regular thing. My hope is it gets back to being a regular thing.

Usually I would go over the past COTW, but we are basically starting out anew. So, without further adieu, this edition is our semi-annual picture drive. We usually try to do it when there is decent weather in the state, and today seems to fit the bill. Now although you are encouraged to go out and take pictures, you can also just search the internet for images that have the proper licensing and upload those. Flickr is one site that has a fair amount of content with the proper licensing (most images on Flickr are not compatible). See WP:COPYRIGHT in general. For some “free” sources, check out the our dormant subproject that has some links to sources.

Lastly, if you need to know what images we need, here are the requests. Please remove the request from the talk page if you add an image.

Finally (this is not image related), as the years have passed, we have lost many good editors, and others, like myself, are no longer in school or are working full-time or both, and thus are less active in the project. The project lives on, but it has created a bit of a power vacuum without a de facto cabal still around all the time. With that in mind, I encourage newer project members to step-up and fill some leadership type roles. Granted, we have no formal ruling junta or anything and no real defined roles, but there are many maintenance type tasks that some of us just took on to keep the project going. For instance, I ran the COTW, was pretty much the only one doing assessments, updating the portal, and even handing out the awards. I am sure others in the project can name what things they have done. The point being, that while I enjoyed those and still do some of those, I simply no longer have the free time to do all of it at a level that the project deserves. That said, I hope to start a discussion at WT:ORE where we can see if some newer editors would like to step-up and take on some of these tasks, which will hopefully make for a more inclusive project, and maybe get us back to the heyday of say 2008 when things were really rocking for WikiProject Oregon.

As always, please click here to opt out of these messages, or click here to make a suggestion for a future COTW. Aboutmovies (talk) 22:24, 23 April 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks!

Too soon

Before File:P3050273.JPG can be tagged for deletion, all usages must be fixed. — [[::User:RHaworth|RHaworth]] (talk · contribs) 23:18, 15 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Done Sorry. I thought the file links could be trans-wiki redirected but I guess it doesn't work like that. Thanks for saying so. :-) --Jsayre64 (talk) 00:24, 16 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Why do my edits keep getting deleted??

Why do my edits keep getting deleted?? I edited the birth section of July 2nd and put my name, Henry Thomas Haskell, in there as an American Author (Novelist). Please tell me why they keep getting deleted. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 24.62.92.231 (talk) 16:06, 23 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]

These edits have reverted because adding people without wikipedia articles to date article is strongly discouraged, as is adding yourself to them. Free_Bear (talk)
Well just because I don't have a individual wikipedia page doesn't mean I'm not an American Author (Novelist). —Preceding unsigned comment added by 24.62.92.231 (talk) 16:16, 23 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Please read WP:WTAF. Wikipedia is not a directory, generally the "do they have a wikipedia article?" rule of thumb is used to definite notability on Wikipedia. It's worth reading through WP:BIO and WP:GNG; they are more policy-oriented than the first link I gave. tedder (talk) 16:28, 23 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Re: John Howard Lindauer photo/source

Someone alerted me months ago that File:Lindauer-JohnHoward.jpg was under copyright investigation. Just some quick background: the publication it came from is called the Official Election Pamphlet (originally Election Candidate Pamphlet), published by Alaska's lieutenant governor (in print since 1974 and on the web since 1996) prior to every general election, and distributed free to voters. I've held off in adding any images from these publications due to uncertainty of their status.

I paid a visit to the Alaska Division of Elections (administratively under the lieutenant governor) today. Previously, I was dancing around this subject with my questions, but asked more direct questions this time about potential copyright status. The response I received from our regional elections director based in Fairbanks was that the only part of the OEP which is potentially copyrightable would be any usage of outside artwork on the front cover. This is great news, of course, but just one person's say-so obviously isn't going to change things. I'm looking for any pointers whatsoever in tracking down anything to differentiate from this person saying these works are public domain, and what would satisfy such a definition here on Wikipedia.RadioKAOS (talk) 00:59, 24 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for telling me about the photo. About the copyright, the election pamphlets probably are non-free, considering that most state governments claim copyright to their work (just not the federal government). Good luck on this. Maybe you should go first to WP:MCQ, or check on the website of Alaska's government. Jsayre64 (talk) 14:45, 24 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you

Thank you for the barnstar for my admin work, it is most appreciated! Come check out the newest article I wrote, on a book by Dan Savage, it is The Kid: What Happened After My Boyfriend and I Decided to Go Get Pregnant. Feel free to drop by on the talk page with ideas about research for more secondary sources. Thanks again! Cheers, -- Cirt (talk) 17:37, 27 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Me?

I would never deliberately make unconstructive edits or pages on wikipedia.

Maybe my account has been hacked.

I've created a new user account with a very strong password.

In the future I will change very strong passwords regularly.
