Tha Carter IV is the upcoming ninth studio album by American rapper Lil Wayne. The album was originally intended to be released on May 16, 2011, but had its release date rescheduled several times. The current release date is now set to be on August 29, 2011[1].

Background

Wayne mentioned the possibility of this as early as September 2009.[2] Following Tha Carter III's achievement of selling over 3 million copies, becoming 2008's best-selling album.[3] He began recording this album in early October 2008,[4] but later that month he claimed that he did not want this to follow Tha Carter III immediately.

Wayne said that Tha Carter IV would be released in 2010 just before the holidays.[5] Birdman had previously stated that The Carter IV would be packaged with Rebirth as a double disc album.[6] However, Wayne denied this idea saying that "Tha Carter IV deserves Tha Carter IV". He went on to say that We Are Young Money may be packaged with Rebirth.[7] However, it was later confirmed that Rebirth and We Are Young Money will be released separately[8] and Tha Carter IV will be released in 2011.[9] Tha Carter IV was going to be released in late May,[9] but was pushed back to June. Mack Maine confirmed that the album's release was postponed because they still needed time to make it perfect.[10] On June 2, 2011, the album was pushed back further, this time to August, in order to have more time to promote the project, and the album is due for release on August 29, 2011[1]

The album's cover was released to the internet on April 19, 2011.[11][12]

Also the track "Dear Anne (Stan Part 2)" (originally "Anne") was originally supposed to be on Tha Carter IV but has since then been removed from the album.[13] Lil Wayne recently said in an interview with XXL that he wasn't a fan of "Dear Anne" and that it was originally planned to appear on Tha Carter III.[14] On July 8, 2011, producer Swizz Beatz hinted at Wayne possibly re-recording a new version of Anne, after he had said the verses were too "old".[15]

On June 13, 2011, a fourth track from Tha Carter IV was confirmed on MTV's Unplugged by Lil Wayne performing live. The song is called "Nightmares of the Bottom" and has already generated more than 2 million hits on YouTube.

On July 8, 2011, Lil Twist has revealed to MTV that he will be rapping on Lil Wayne's "Flowers" and is said to appear on Tha Carter IV, but did not appear on Lil Wayne's upcoming mixtape Sorry 4 the Wait as it was possible that it could.

On July 11, 2011, Lil Wayne confirmed in an interview with MTV that Tha Carter IV is finished, he stated that "The album is done and it'll be out August 29. It's totally done".[16]

The deluxe edition has been confirmed for Tha Carter IV. The artwork was released on July 16, 2011.[17]

Guests

Kanye West, T-Pain,[18] Young Jeezy, Drake, Big Sean Kevin Rudolf,[19] Juelz Santana,[20] Lil Twist[21] and Nicki Minaj[21] have been reported to have worked with Lil Wayne for this album. Tech N9ne,[22] Jadakiss,[23] Rick Ross, Young Money Crew, Nas, Shyne, Bun B, Cee-Lo Green, Busta Rhymes, will.i.am, John Legend and Cory Gunz have been confirmed as features on the album. [24]

Singles

The album's lead single "6 Foot 7 Foot", was released on December 19, 2010 and was produced by "A Milli" producer Bangladesh. The song samples from "Day-O (The Banana Boat Song)" by Harry Belafonte. The song features Cory Gunz and peaked at number 9 on the Billboard Hot 100.

On March 23, 2011, "John", which features Rick Ross, was released. The song samples Rick Ross' "I'm Not a Star" hook, the first track off Teflon Don.[25] The song was produced by producer Polow da Don. The song peaked at number 22 on the Billboard Hot 100.

On May 26, 2011, the third single was released and titled "How to Love." The entire song is sung over a slow instrumental produced by Detail.[26] The song was released to iTunes for digital download on that same day.[27] According to Detail, Lil Wayne uses no Auto-Tune on the song.[28]
