RFPERM Archiving

Hi Hydro, sorry for taking so long to get back to you on this. I've just run the bot through the autopatrolled candidates for approval pages (I went through pages 9 to 36). You can see the archival edits here, here and here. You can see the bot's report here (the report is probably the only readable thing here ;D). As you can see at the report, there were a few errors (kinda unavoidable when running though 776 requests ). The most "serious" errors were the bot skipped two pages due to undated requests at Wikipedia:Requests for permissions/Autopatrolled candidates 23 and Wikipedia:Requests for permissions/Autopatrolled candidates 24 (the reason the bot has linked to Wikipedia:Requests for permissions/Autopatrolled for all the errors is because I had to "fake" the article titles to get it to link to there on the archive pages). This is fairly simple to fix though: It is simply a matter of dating those requests and getting the bot to run through those two pages again (alternatively I can make the bot not look for dates, since it's not actually using them anyway). Less serious, but more difficult to fix are the requests marked as  Not done but where the user has the permission. I'm not sure if you actually want these archived anyway, since it's not really relevant for what you're doing (you won't be looking at users who have the permission anyway, so it won't matter when filtering out candidates if they have been denied previously). Please let me know if everything else looks okay or not asap, as I am holding off on the normal archiving for awhile to make it easier to undo the bot's edits if there is a problem. Cheers, - Kingpin13 (talk) 21:25, 21 March 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Archived citations take 2

I drafted a new RfC. Please take a look and suggest a better test scenario of you can. That was the first thing that came to mind. SJ+ 20:57, 22 March 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you!

Thanks for creating that Seattle navbox, I was surprised we didn't have one until now. 71.113.33.111 (talk) 06:37, 23 March 2011 (UTC)[reply]

New Pages and New Users

I've recently been doing some thinking (and a great deal of consultation with Philippe and James at the WMF's community department) on how to keep new users around and participating, particularly in light of Sue's March update. One of the things we'd like to test is whether the reception they get when they make their first article is key. In a lot of cases, people don't stay around; their article is deleted and that's that. By the time any contact is made, in other words, it's often too late.

What we're thinking of doing is running a project to gather data on if this occurs, how often it occurs, and so on, and in the mean time try to save as many pages (and new contributors) as possible. Basically, involved users would go through the deletion logs and through Special:NewPages looking for new articles which are at risk of being deleted, but could have something made of them - in other words, non-notable pages that are potentially notable, or spammy pages that could be rewritten in more neutral language. This would be entirely based on the judgment of the user reviewing pages - no finnicky CSD standards. These pages would be incubated instead of deleted, and the creator contacted and shepherded through how to turn the article into something useful. If they respond and it goes well, we have a decent article and maybe a new long-term editor. If they don't respond, the draft can be deleted after a certain period of time.

I know this isn't necessarily your standard fare, but with your new pages and autopatrolled work I thought it might be up your alley. If you're interested, read Wikipedia:Wiki Guides/New pages, sign up and get involved; questions can be dropped on the talkpage or directed at me. Welcome Back

Hello Hydroxonium and welcome to Wikipedia. I'm a new Wiki-Guide.

You might remember me...:-)...My name is Buster7 and it gives me great pleasure to see your return and to tell you that I have been extremely sad during your recent time away from Wikipedia. I am so glad that you are back and that you will be roaming the back pages and doing whatever possible to make Wikipedia editing even better. Thanks for fixing the "Brain Barnstar". Only a practiced surgeon such as you could have performed the delicate operation without killing the patient. I'm here to assist, so if you have any situtions that require help, you can contact me on my talk page, or you can send me an e-mail. TRA!Buster Seven Talk 21:09, 19 April 2011 (UTC)[reply]

WebCite bot

I have made a request at WP:BTR#AntiLinkrotBot. I don't really expect this to go anywhere, but I think a try does not harm. There can't really happen anything more seariously than just the rejection of this proposal, so I thought I simply give it another try and wait for the reactions it triggers. Just thought I let you should know. Toshio Yamaguchi (talk) 16:36, 23 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for the heads up, Toshio. I'll add something to the bot request in the next day or two. Thanks for keeping this idea alive. - Hydroxonium (TCV) 04:38, 24 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]
I see you added your comment on the bot request. Thanks very much for that. Toshio Yamaguchi (talk) 11:01, 28 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]
My comments haven't seemed to generate any response. I'm disillusioned that the community doesn't care more about this issue. I'll keep thinking about what we should do until we get some type of solution in place. - Hydroxonium (TCV) 00:45, 29 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Discussion on WP:VPR regarding linkrot

Hey I noticed that you have been pretty central to the link rot issue. I would like to get your input on what should go into a automated archival extension for mediawiki. There is also a current discussion going on at the Village Pump regarding this that you may be interested in. Thanks, --Kevin Brown (talk) 02:04, 10 June 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Please see WP:VP/R#Tool for WebCite archiving. Cheers. Toshio Yamaguchi (talk) 10:29, 10 June 2011 (UTC)[reply]

@Kevin, thanks very much for taking on this task. I'll post some comments at the village pump.
@Toshio, you're the best. I really appreciate you keeping this idea moving forward. - Hydroxonium (TCV) 00:00, 12 June 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you

Hi Hydroxonium. I just wanted to drop by and say thank you for the support and kind words you offered in my RfA. Yours was one of the rationales that most brightened my week; I enjoyed answering your question, too. Best, 28bytes (talk) 16:51, 14 June 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks. I was happy to support as you are more than qualified for the job. I'm thankful you are volunteering to take on extra tasks. Kind regards. - Hydroxonium (TCV) 04:28, 15 June 2011 (UTC)[reply]

And thanks for your support and thoughtful comments. Now we can get back to fixing citation caching :) – SJ + 23:26, 18 June 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Citation caching

Brian Mingus reports he has 2 people working on WikiScholar this summer, and there is some interest from a Digital Public Library of America to support similar work, which could serve as a larger-scope umbrella service to capture and preserve citations on WP and elsewhere. This is in parallel to what we should test now on en:wp, but could push out the questions about neutrality and single-service-provider [for the caching service] to a Project with its own contributors and monitors.

Be well, – SJ + 23:26, 18 June 2011 (UTC)[reply]

That is great news. WikiScholar is a really ambitious project that will require a lot of work, but I think it is exactly what we need for all our projects that use citaions/references/etc. Thanks very much for the heads up.
In related news, Pmartin has started archiving WP citations recently. Oh, and congrats on your re-election (I'm sure you can guess who I voted for). Best regards. - Hydroxonium (TCV) 23:51, 18 June 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Linkrot - another try

I made another proposal at WP:VP/R#Automatically archive all reference links when an article gets FA nominated regarding linkrot. Although I am not too confident this will lead somewhere, I want to let you know and welcome anything you have to say about this. Regards. Toshio Yamaguchi (talk) 14:43, 5 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Toshio. Hope you are doing well. Thanks very much for letting me know about this. It's a great idea and I think it might be more succesful than our other attempts. I went ahead and commented at the village pump. You did a great job. Thanks. - Hydroxonium (TCV) 03:10, 6 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]

'Crat' bar RfC

If a new RfC does get started on that, could you please drop me a link? Since I'm asking, nobody can say "canvass" .. lol. Thx for thinking of me. Cheers. — Ched :  ?  21:21, 6 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Will do. - Hydroxonium (TCV) 21:28, 6 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]
I don't now much of this yet,I did notice everyone on that chart at or below 82% wasn't promoted and people 83% and up were. I think I read the "bar" is 90%. Seems to have defacto dropped and/or have a discretion zone. PumpkinSky talk 20:34, 11 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Sorry for the late response. Yes, there does seem to a discretionary zone and the 90% bar is more of a "safe zone" than a hard threshold. Looking at the stats that RL0919 has posted to the talk page has been enlightening for me. I guess my impression of RfB is a bit different than the reality, so I'm happy for the info. Best reagrds. - Hydroxonium (TCV) 03:37, 13 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Caleb Schaber

Any idea why Caleb's memorial page disappeared on Facebook? I like what you've done with his Wiki page but I wonder what happened... — Preceding unsigned comment added by 75.40.244.34 (talk) 03:27, 11 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for the compliment. Unfortunately, I don't know what happened. In fact, I was unaware that there was a memorial page for Caleb at Facebook. If you could post a link to where it was, I could look in to it and see what I can find. Thanks for stopping by. Best regards. - Hydroxonium (TCV) 06:46, 11 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]
